Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

This edit-a-thon will be run over two days (Friday 9 March and Saturday 10 March), and will be linked by the thematic focus on female artists (primarily visual and literary artists) who have in some way contributed to Malta's cultural and artistic sector. This is the first time that an Art & Feminism edit-a-thon will be taking place in Malta, and it was decided to hold the edit-a-thon over two days (one a weekday and the other a weekend) to ensure that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to participate in at least one of the days.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The event is being promoted extensively online, particularly through the channels of Blitz, a prominent art space that will be running and hosting the edit-a-thon. The edit-a-thon is being promoted through the Blitz website and Wikimedia Community Malta website, as well as through all Blitz social media, including a newsletter, instagram, vimeo and a Facebook event page that has been set up. Two press releases have been sent to local and international media. The event has been covered by local media, including a culture bulletin called Kultura News which produced a video about the event. Promotional leaflets have also been printed and distributed amongst potential participants.

The event has also gained significant attention thanks to a number of events which have been held over the past weeks. Foremost amongst these was a public talk by Flora Katz, a curator and Wikimedia who ran the Art & Feminism project in Paris for three years and who provided those in attendance with a fascinating insight into the project. This event was supported by the French Embassy in malta, wo have also notified their community network of the event.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

The edit-a-thon will be led by [u:ToniSant], a highly experience Wikimedia editor who has led various edit-a-thons in the past, both in Malta and internationally. He has also been highly involved in Art & Feminism edit-a-thons in the UK.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

A number of events in the run-up to the Art & Feminism edit-a-thons have been run with the goal of promoting knowledge of the goals behind the project and providing potential participants with the necessary skills to participate and contribute to the edit-a-thons themselves. These include a very well-attended public talk by curator Flora Katz, who ran the Art & Feminism project in Paris for three years (photos of the event here) and an introductory training session with participants to the edit-a-thons (photos here).

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? All participants in the edit-a-thon will form a new audience group for all organisations collaborating on the project, particularly Blitz and Spazju Kreattiv. Communication with this audience group will be maintained following the edit-a-thon, and a series of follow up activities are being planned, with the aim of these leading up to the second Art+Feminism edit-a-thon in 2019. Both Blitz and Spazju Kreattiv have a strong communications network with which they maintain regular contact with their followers and audiences. These channels will also be used to engage participants for future activities after the initial edit-a-thon.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This is the first time that Art & Feminism is being run in Malta. It is a particularly important project for the local cultural sector, as there is a clear gap in the documentation of female artists who are (or have been) influential within the local cultural sector. This project seeks to address this gap by encouraging further writing into these artists, thereby ensuring that their role within Maltese cultural heritage is rightly acknowledged and documented on Wikipedia. This grant will go a great way in helping us achieve this goal, as it will enable us to engage with more people over a longer period of time.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events - 2
  2. Number of participants - 25
  3. Number of new editors - 8
  4. Number of of articles created or improved - 5
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - N/A

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

This project is a collaboration with Blitz, a local independent art space, and Spazju Kreattiv, Malta's National Centre for Creativity. Both these organisations will be providing invaluable resources, including the space within which the edit-a-thon and related activities will take place, technical equipment and logistical support. Having two collaborating institutions of such prominence will also be extremely valuable in terms of promoting the edit-a-thon amongst a broader audience who may not yet have engaged with a wiki platform.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • Catering - €200
  • Print material & stationery - €200
  • Children's supervision - €100
  • Travel expenses for Wikimedian - €300
