Project Goal
editChoose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

- Increase skills for existing editors.
- Add or improve Wikipedia content in Spanish.
- Encourage interest in contributing to open initiatives such as Wikipedia.
Project Plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- We are planning a series of editathons focused on increasing and improving the number of Wikipedia articles in Spanish, related to Psychology, Education, Sports Organization and Medicine. Participants will be mostly graduate students, lecturers and researchers from two Mexican institutions, University da Vinci (an online university) and Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL; a public university with +150k students). We will provide training before and on the day of the editathons. We will also organize three talks on open knowledge and Wikipedia (two face-to-face and one online), to raise people's interest in the editathons.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- We will use three main strategies.
- Personal invitations. Some program coordinators at the participating institutions are supporting this event. They will personally invite students and academics from the Master of Educational Technology (University da Vinci), and the Master and PhD programs in the Faculties of Psychology, Medicine and Sports Organization (UANL). Also, in December 2017, we organized a smaller editathon at UANL’s Faculty of Psychology (Wiki FaPsiUANL). Most participants agreed to be contacted again for similar events. We will invite them via email. At least three of these past participants are currently in other universities (in Spain, the Netherlands and Mexico). They have agreed to share the information of this event, and invite their classmates and colleagues to contribute online.
- Social media. We will promote the event on the Facebook and Twitter accounts of the Faculty of Psychology of UANL. We have an informative post available in our institutional blog. We will try to use other national dissemination channels, such as the websites of University da Vinci and the other participating faculties at UANL.
- International platforms. Since the event will take place during the Open Education Week, we will use its website for promotion. The event is already listed there. Also, we have been offered a space to share info about the editathons in the blog of the Association for Learning Technology in the UK. While our focus is on involving Spanish-speaking editors with graduate studies, we are happy to share and create connections with the wider community.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Some people who participated in our past editathon (Wiki FaPsiUANL) will join us and help, including BrendaPadilla3 and Susydelagarza. We will also be using the training videos created by WikiUNAM.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Participants will be graduate students, researchers and lecturers. We expect most of them to be knowledgeable in their academic interests but new to Wikipedia editing. Some will have some experience as editors, as they participated in our previous editathon (Wiki FaPsiUANL). We hope they can help others.
- Since UANL is quite widespread and has several campuses, we will have one editathon at each participating faculty (Psychology, Medicine and Sports Organization). Each faculty will facilitate a suitable space, with Internet access and computers for participants. We will reuse the equipment we got last time (ie, a wifi repeater, voltage converters & extension cords). We plan to address the issues we had in our previous editathon. We will start each editathon with a quick training session. We will have help sheets and FAQs. Staff and volunteers will be available to help. Since last time we struggled with the technology, we will have an external, portable wifi and hopefully, a spare laptop.
- University da Vinci will provide a Zoom room, where participants will be able to seek support online.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- After the editathon, we will publish an overview of the event in our institutional blog. We will email editors to thank them for their participation and encourage them to keep contributing to Wikipedia. We also plan to conduct a study on the experience (topic to be decided but probably including the shift from knowledge consumer to knowledge creator).
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- It all started in 2016. As part of a course assignment, Master-level students at UANL’s Faculty of Psychology contributed to Wikipedia. In December 2017, with the support of Wikimedia Foundation we involved other graduate students, lecturers and researchers in an editathon (Wiki FaPsiUANL). Now, other faculties are joining us, so we decided to also name the event Wiki UANL. Since the University da Vinci is also helping we added another, more inclusive name, Wiki Universitarios. This initiative is growing. We are trying to make some noise, nationally and internationally, to raise awareness of open initiatives and Wikipedia.
Impact
editHow will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 10 (3 talks about openness and Wikipedia, 3 training sessions, 3 editathon sessions, 1 wrap-up session)
- Number of participants: 50+
- Number of new editors: 40+
- Number of of articles created or improved: 50+
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)
Resources
editWhat resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- Each participating faculty at UANL will provide a suitable space with Internet access and computers for participants, and support the events before the editathon (training sessions and talks about open knowledge and Wikipedia). We will reuse the equipment we got for a previous editathon (ie, a wifi repeater, voltage converters & extension cords) and the materials we used (help sheets, slides, videos).
- Students from each faculty will receive training before the editathon and help as staff members. Program coordinators from UANL and University da Vinci will facilitate the logistics of the whole event.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- Food & drinks = 270 USD
- Electronic equipment (portable wifi) = 100 USD
- Book gift cards to recognize exceptional volunteer contributions = 110 USD
- Miscellaneous supplies (name tags, markers, paper, etc.) = 20 USD
- Total = 500 USD
