Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? There are now over 8 thousand monuments listed in the Monuments database, of which 53% are covered with at least one picture. The number of participants was less than we expected (36 vs 100), but the number of photos still exceeded expectations (8755 photos uploaded vs 2-3000 expected), of which 300 are currently being used in the projects, which means more monuments have a photograph on Commons for the first time. This edition of WLM in Portugal went reasonably well, considering the pandemic, although we did not get as much publicity in local and digital newspapers as last year.

100 participants	36 participants	17 (47%) newcomers, which means most participants are not new to Wikimedia projects. This is lower than previous years, and we notice that newcomers in previous years are returning more often to subsequent editions.

200-400 photos used in projects	653 photos used in projects	The prize for largest number of different monuments attracted a fair number of participants which leads to many photos uploaded of rarer monuments, which are then used in several projects because they are the first ones available.

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

• What worked well?

This is the third year in a row that we organized Wiki Loves Monuments, which allowed us to make it happen with much less effort than in previous years, as the database was pretty much up to date.

• What did not work so well?

We did not do much in terms of communication before the contest, and did not send press releases to newspapers or city halls as in previous years, which may explain the lower number of (new) contributors.

• What would you do differently next time?

We would probably hire someone to organize the communication and seek aditional sponsorship for the prizes. We have now received the Wikimedia Community Fund covering our expenses for the full year, which will allow us to hire someone for coordination of the contests and other activities.

• 1st prize: 400€ gift voucher
• 2nd prize: 250€ gift voucher
• 3rd prize: 150€ gift voucher

• Special prize (number of original monuments): 100€ gift voucher

Remaining funds

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

Yes, we did not use the communication budget, nor the printing budget as none of the winners requested a certificate.

We would like to use the remaining budget in communication leading up to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, if possible.

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.
