Project Plan
editActivities
editWikimedia Portugal is organizing Wiki Loves Earth 2020. This will give a good participation and visibility in a contest we are preparing very carefully, updating the lists of the natural parks and protected areas on Wikidata, and reaching out to nature photographers aiming at getting new Commoners and wikimedians on the projects. We are asking the help of the WMF to get this sum for the prizes, helping us with the organization. Prizes will be photographic or informatic material, either bought by the winners in the form of gift vouchers (Amazon, FNAC, etc.).
We are also arranging to get an exhibition of winning photos to happen in cooperation with CIIMAR and University of Porto that run a couple of Environmental monitoring centres in northern Portugal [1], [2]. This should happen only after the COVID-19 situation improves in Portugal, of course. To clarify, no public event or gathering will be organized before 15 September as per wmf guidelines.
Impact
editNote: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.
We are focusing not only on the improvement of content on Wikimedia Commons on natural parks and protected areas of Portugal, but also, and mainly, on attracting new users to the Wikimedia projects, and improving community engagement on these initiatives. To this purpose, having an attractive prize is key.
On the metrics, we would like to get as many uploads and users for Wiki Loves Earth (WLE) this year than in 2019. In 2019, 142 users uploaded more than one thousand pictures of protected areas in Portugal. This year, given that people may be more likely to stay at home given the pandemic, we will not encourage people to go out and take pictures, but rather WLE could be an opportunity to occupy the time people spend in social isolation to contribute old photos to Wikimedia.
- Number of total participants: ~100/150 uploaders
- Number of people who will help organize the event: 5 people from Wikimedia Portugal
- Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 1500/2000 photos
- Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): ~15-20%
