Project Goal edit

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

We are the Ohio Wikimedians User Group in the United States. We're requesting funds to host a variety of events and projects over the next few months, including a photo campaign and edit-a-thons. Our funds will also be used to support the local Ohio student group Wikipedia Connection.
Our user group's objectives are:
  • To promote Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects within Ohio.
  • To collaboratively improve the quality of Wikimedia project content through edit-a-thons, workshops, educational programs, and more.
  • To support any Wikimedia-oriented events or organizations operating within Ohio.
  • To establish a sense of community within our group.
Our grant request's purpose is to fulfill these goals through the events and projects listed below.

Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Through the rest of year, the user group will hold a photo campaign, offline activities and edit-a-thons, and general meetings within the state of Ohio.
Projects includes:
  • Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States: The Ohio Wikimedians User Group, along with several others, is organizing the United States' participation in Wiki Loves Monuments, an international photo campaign. In addition to working with other user groups, chapters, and individuals to promote the event nationally, the Ohio Wikimedians User Group plans to promote the event in Ohio through advertising, networking, and hosting exhibitions in university and local libraries.
  • General outreach, which includes working with public libraries around Ohio to host edit-a-thons; raising awareness of Wikipedia and opportunities to contribute; and supporting any other local Wikimedia groups as needed.
This grant will also support the Ohio State University student group Wikipedia Connection, which will a result in a series of events and programs through the Fall 2016 semester at Ohio State. Wikipedia Connection's events this semester include edit-a-thons; weekly workshops; participating in Wiki Loves Monuments; and GLAM outreach.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

The Ohio Wikimedians User Group has a presence on Facebook and Twitter, as well as a mailing list of Ohioan Wikimedians. We also have contacts across the state, including in places such as the Ohio State University and several public libraries. We will use our social media, targeted Facebook advertising, mailing list, and contacts to promote both the user group, and our individual events.
Wikipedia Connection's main audience is the Ohio State University community. They engage and promote our activities in the following ways:
  • Participating in campus involvement fairs.
  • Posting flyers around campus.
  • E-mailing various Ohio State University listservs.
  • E-mailing a mailing list of subscribers.
  • Working with Ohio State professors and faculty to promote events to students (word of mouth, extra credit opportunities, etc.)
  • Collaborating with other University organizations and departments, as well as other Columbus-area organizations to raise awareness of events.
  • Promoting via social media (Facebook and Twitter)

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

In addition to our events resulting in content being created on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons, we plan for our efforts in the coming months to build a better Wikimedia community and network in Ohio. We plan to have individuals become informed of our user group and efforts, and for them to participate (and regularly participate) in our activities and efforts. As our network expands, we will keep in touch with participants to inform them and invite them to future events, projects, and initiatives.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. Number of total participants: 100
  2. Number of articles created or improved (if applicable): 100 (primarily through edit-a-thons and workshops)
  3. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 400 (primarily through Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States)
  4. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): 100 (primarily through Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States)

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Current Ohio Wikimedians User Group members can be seen here. SuperHamster, AddisWang, and Rimmel.Edits are spearheading the current organizational efforts, and plan to attract more organizational support over time. Some of our projects are also attracting the help of others, such as our Wiki Loves Monuments project receiving assistance from the international team, another local Ohioan Wikimedian, and Ohio History Connection.
Wikipedia Connection has six student officers, along with two faculty advisors from the University. The student officers consist of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and three board members. Working with Ohio State faculty, the officers organize the student groups' events.
Wikipedia Connection has $310.13 in funds left over from the previous two semesters. These funds will be applied to the coming semester.
Wikipedia Connection also has some Ohio State University resources available for use:
  • Additional funding may be provided by the Ohio State University in three forms, which will be applied and used as the priority source)
    • Operating funds, which are used for general operation of the organization in the year (up to $200).
    • Programming funds, which are used to host programs and events on campus. Wikiepdia Connection will be using these funds to host one of two planned edit-a-thons this semester.
    • Resource room funds, which is a free $250 allocation given per year for student organizations to use on resources such as printing, signage, and balloons.
There are currently no sources of in-kind donations or additional funding, though this may be worked towards - especially for particular events.
