Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
The University of Arizona’s CATalyst Studios, Poetry Center, Center for Creative Photography, and Public History Collaborative are working together to plan a one-day edit-a-thon, for a day of editing Wikipedia pages concerning womxn and non-binary artists, makers, poets, photographers. This all-day event is designed to improve coverage of womxn, non-binary and femme-identified people in the the arts on Wikipedia, as well as encourage diverse editorship. The edit-a-thon will include a keynote by a local poet/artist/activist, workshops on various aspects of contributing to Wikipedia, tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, reference materials, and lunch will be provided. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate, with a special welcome to womxn, non-binary, and femme people. This event is generously sponsored and co-hosted by CATalyst Studios, the Center for Creative Photography, the Poetry Center, and the Public History Collaborative, making it free and open to the general public as well as the University of Arizona community.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
We have created a library guide with information and resources for the edit-a-thon, which we are still fine tuning. We intend to share this guide and an invitation to edit with faculty listservs and across our institutions’ social media pages. Given the unique position of each of our various partners, we believe we will also be able to reach a significant number of community members outside of the university context.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
This is the first year that all four organizations have come together to host one larger event--previously, each organization was hosting individual events. We have four experienced editors in addition to several partners who are eager to learn more about how to edit and teach others. Our Wikipedia editors include Belthorne, Amandameeks, Nifnif75, Emilyuna, and Mquad.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
We will host the event in the library’s Learning Studio which is equipped with presentation monitors, enough laptops for every participant (up to 60), and collaborative table groupings with the ability to show a single user’s screen (for demonstration purposes). This classroom works best for the kind of workshop on editing Wikipedia we will provide, but also allows for more informal, small group teaching and learning as needed.
The initial part of the editathon will train participants in the skills necessary to edit Wikipedia pages and contribute high quality content.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
We are starting a bi-weekly “Wikipedian Wednesdays” meet up in the CATalyst Studios, as of January 2020. All attendees will be encouraged to continue editing Wikipedia and join this community of practice. As we shape this new approach to our annual event, we hope that the appeal of participating year to year is partly driven by hosting it at a different location and with a different focus (i.e. this year we are hosting it in CATalyst (Maker) Studios and talking about activism; next year we may host it at the Center for Creative Photography and focus on womxn photographers).
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 1
- Number of participants: 60
- Number of new editors: 40
- Number of of articles created or improved: 120
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 20
In addition to the quantitative goals, we will ensure that we have done all that we can to create a valuable learning opportunity and welcoming environment. We will gather qualitative feedback from our participants in order to gauge whether they learned something new, felt welcomed and valued, and felt their time was well spent.
What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
We have several experienced Wikipedians who will lead the Wikipedia training and workshop, and additional library staff members who will help locate resources on topics relevant to the participants interests on Wikipedia. The event planner has five years of experience in editing Wikipedia and organizing this particular event and is an Art+Feminism Regional Ambassador. Each organization has generously offered $200 to help off-set the costs of the event, which will cover our keynote speaker.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- Food and drink = $720 ($10 per person for lunch; $2 per person for coffee/snack break)
- Child care = $200 (stipend for childcare providers through a partnership with the College of Education)
- Parking validation/passes = $80 (provides 10 parking vouchers for community members who need them)
- Miscellaneous supplies = $200 (for Wikipedia BINGO prizes, nametags)
