Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The Wikipedia for Community Outreach Programme worked perfectly well with enormous publicity and sensitization through the social media channels- like the WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and Telegram. The members of the academia (this includes students, staff and faculty members) became fully aware and well informed of the Wikipedia movement and the Edit-A-Thon event at LARIS, UI.

  • What did not work so well?

The internet fluctuations and connectivity issues due to poor networks. Winning interest from the participants and recruiting new Wikipedia editors. Only a few participants were willing to edit Wikipedia and make their contributions and get enrolled on the outreach dashboard. Some participants gave their reasons for not actively participating to be; going for holiday shortly after their semester exams. Others, mentioned that the festive periods -Christmas and New year were around the corner and would not be available. Therefore, the participation of some undergraduates in the training was truncated. Also, the recording of some of the scheduled online meetings on zoom was affected by technical hitches and network difficulties.

  • What would you do differently next time?

I would rather organize another Wikipedia sensitisation and awareness programme and Edit-A-Thon in my community at a more suitable time, location and venue. The proposed venue to be used would be such provided with a strong bandwidth and good internet protocol to cater for the connectivity issues.
