Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
- Yes, the project took place from 2-10 August 2019 in Kötschach-Mauthen and we are very happy with how it went. We recruited new editors from underrepresented groups (women, queer people, young people) - about half of the group has not edited before - and we increased the skills and motivtion of existing editors, some of whom had only edited in community projects like this before. We added lots of content on feminism as well as biographies on women, trans and inter people from all around the world in German, English, Spanish, Catalan, Armenian and Arabic. Through our project, the involvement of underrepresented groups as well as the publicity around the project on social media channels, we have increased the diversity of Wikimedia projects and contributed, both through the project itself and the biographies we wrote, to the visibility of different genders in our movement and Wikimedia projects.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
20 participants | 19 participants | Apart from one cancellation from an Austrian participant, we completed our goal of having 5 people from each Austria, Germany, Spain and Armenia. |
10 new editors | 9 new editors | As expected, we reached a lot of new editors with this project. Apart from those 9, some of the editors with previous experience were not very experienced and received new skills here. |
120+ new articles | 139+ new and improved articles | You can see the articles we created on our results page. In addition, we edited lots of existing Wikidata items and created lots of new ones. |
6 repeat participants | 5 repeat participants | The two facilitators as well as 3 previous participants in Wikipedia for Peace participated. |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- The project was very successful. We managed to create a diversity of genders within the group and we created a strong exchange and discussion around feminism and gender equality within the group. All participants were very motivated to contribute new content to Wikipedia and the space, a small village in the mountains, helped to shape close group dynamics. All participants learned a lot through the direct supervision and mentoring of more experienced editors present at the project. Thanks to this Rapid Grant, we also have an even budget.
- The article list that we created was not only an inspiration for the people here, but was also appreciated in the wider movement. Women in Red and the LGBT+ User Group reposted the list on Twitter and remote participants joined in to write articles off our list.
- What did not work so well?
- Applying for this grant was a bit short-term. While the village where we stayed, Kötschach-Mauthen, was alright, the seminar room was quite small for 19 people and it was a challenge that we needed to switch between table arrangements with electricity for editing and more open formats for games and discussions.
- What would you do differently next time?
- Next time we would definitely need to plan our complete budget, including booking travels of participants from far-away countries such as Armenia, much earlier in order to be able to apply for additional funding earlier.
- We would also go for a different venue, again in a village in the mountains due to the isolation and the nice landscape, but with a better seminar room to work in.
