Activities

edit

This rapid grants request is to fund two Ohio Wikimedians User Group events in January 2020:

  • Wikipedia Day, a celebration of Wikipedia's birthday that will include a meet 'n' greet; a presentation on recent happenings in Wikimedia; a light lunch and cake; and games/socializing/editing.
  • #1lib1ref Training, hosted at the Columbus Metropolitan Library to train local librarians on how to add references to Wikipedia and to encourage them to continue contributing.

1. What is your promotion plan?

We will promote our Wikipedia Day event with central notice banners for all Wikipedia readers and editors in central Ohio. #1lib1ref will be held in partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Library; our contact at the library will use their internal posting system to let librarians know about the event.

2. How will you let your community know about the promotion campaign?

We will post to the Ohio Wikimedians mailing list and talk page, publish the Ohio Wikimedians User Group newsletter to all user group members, and publicize the event to our Facebook and Twitter followings.

3.Do you have any experience in promoting Wikimedia projects either online or offline?

The Ohio Wikimedians User Group has multiple experienced Wikipedians who have hosted offline events in the past, including edit-a-thons and previous Wikipedia Day celebrations. For the past three years, Ohio has hosted a Wikipedia Day celebration. We have also hosted a #1lib1ref training session at The Ohio State University in January 2017.

4. What is your post-promotion plan?

Participants will be asked to check into both events with a name and email address; after each event, we will send a post-event survey to gather metrics on success and what participants would like to see done differently next time.
For any newcomers to both events, we will encourage them to sign up as Ohio Wikimedian User Group members, so they can continue to receive updates on affiliate events. We will also encourage all participants to follow the Ohio Wikimedians User Group social media.

5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The Columbus Metropolitan Library has previously worked with us when they hosted the Culture Crawl at WikiConference North America/2018. I am hopeful to continue this mutually beneficial relationship with a staple institution in central Ohio. Events like #1lib1ref allow Ohio Wikimedians User Group to explain the Wikimedia movement to those who would otherwise be unaware. Local librarians are a lifeblood of the community, especially to marginalized populations. The involvement of such people are crucial to the longevity and success of our movement.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

  1. Number of people reached: 2,000 (through social media, central notice, etc.)
  2. Number of campaign participants: 25 (10 for Wikipedia Day, 15 for #1lib1ref)
  3. Increase in pageviews for a Wikimedia project: Not applicable

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Maria Rimmel, along with her contact at the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) will be the primary organizer for these events. A venue for Wikipedia Day has already been confirmed. Maria will work with her contact at the library to promote #1lib1ref to CML librarians and staff as well as secure a room to work in.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
