Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2017-18 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes as the project was super successful. It also exposed the participants to the possibilities of Wikipedia editing.

The Wikipedia Content Creators training was a success and the attendees were so excited to have learned how to contribute to Wikipedia and how Wikipedia can benefit them. I learned a lot from my experience in the training like;

  1. Lots of people don't really know what Wikipedia does and are always excited when someone teaches them. Majority of the trainees were grateful they had the opportunity to learn.
  2. There's a lot of contributions to be made to Wikipedia, so training more content creators in various states and places will help increase contribution since content creators already have a writing and research backgrounds.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • The plan and execution of the training worked effectively and efficient.
    • Though, not all expected attendees showed up, but a good number did and based on their testimonies being their first time, they had a good time as they were expectant and many already contributing.
    • Since they were content creators, passing the knowledge across was a lot easier because plenty of them already had an experience in article writing and other forms of writing. Also they were part of the Wikipedia Content Creators Contest organized in a few months back, so based on that contest, they already had an idea of how Wikipedia works.
    • Getting Kaizenify and Dfertileplain to train participants proved very effective.
  • What did not work so well?

We expected everyone to come with a laptop, but a few people only came with their phones. Learning how to edit Wikipedia with a phone is really cumbersome and even though we had to still put them through, they had to still pair with those with laptops. Since lots of users depend on phone to create virtually everything online, I think it will be better to simplify edits with phones. The funds arrived late and hence affected the date of execution.

  • What would you do differently next time?

I will immediately follow every contest with a training since it worked in this edition as the gap between the contest and training should not be much. During the contest, participant's interest in knowing about Wikipedia is always high and they will want to learn. I will rent laptops during the trainings incase anyone comes without one, so that they can have the full experience of editing Wikipedia on a system. I will take the training to other parts of Nigeria targeting content creators. For now we have only done a part of Lagos we hope to reach other parts of Lagos since the city is really big. I will create more incentive for the content creator with the highest contributions after 1 month if the contest and training. This very attractive incentive will keep their contributions coming
