Project Goal edit
Paiwan people are indigenous to Taiwan. Formalised in 2021, the Paiwan Wikimedian User Group seeks to gather Paiwan language users to increase the awareness, usage and content creation collectively across the Wikimedia movement. In our first year (with the support of this rapid fund grant), the goal is to increase awareness, participation and building the Paiwan language database.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- To increase awareness, we look to run promotional campaigns
- This could be in the form of showing up at any event/ activity (related to Paiwan language and culture) or setting up a booth to promote our work. Example here: Promotional Campaign 1. From these outreach, we look to recruit new editors to join the editing on Paiwan Wikipedia.
- Build up connections and promote the activities on social media (now on Facebook fanpage).
- To increase participation, we look to
- Invite interested people from our outreach to join routine meetups and improve the content on Paiwan Wikipedia by creating new articles. Here's the example to connect Wikipedia to Wiktionary.
- We plan to hold Wikipedia edit-a-thons during our meetups and targeted training events which aim to introduce new users to some skills on the Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikidata and so on.
- To build the Paiwan language database, we will plan for 4 trips to collect corpus in Paiwan community which will be utilized on Paiwan Wikimedia projects.
- Now in Paiwan Wikipedia, users can only cite the references in the other languages to develop the contents of articles because very little documents in Paiwan language can be seen online. First hand knowledge is important. Hence we plan to build up some online documents directly narrated from Paiwan people (of course in Paiwan language). Several interviews will be taken in Paiwan communities and later all the audio or video files will be transcripted into pdf files and be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons (with Paiwan description). Based on these new Paiwan documents, we believe that the quality of the articles in Paiwan Wikipedia can be improved.
- Based on “原住民族語言線上辭典” and “Paiwan Dictionary,” we plan to edit both on Wikidata and Paiwan Wiktionary. For the local expressions and the other words that still need to be discovered and recorded, we plan to visit some different Paiwan communities to collect the vocabularies from the elders or experienced speakers there. These vocabularies and expressions that we have collected will be update on both Wiktionary and Wikidata (lexemes).
How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
- We will create fanpage on social medias like facebook (already done) or instagram to promote our event.
- We will reach out to Paiwan related clubs in schools (student clubs) to see if there will be any related activities for us to promote Paiwan Wikimedia projects. Please see the example.
- We will contact the local government and Paiwan language promotion groups to see if they can help promote the event.
How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
- We will have a fanpage in the name of Paiwan Wikimedians User Group and we will have the promotion of the event on it.
Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.

Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
For the technical support, we will help the participants by the app "Line" or on google meet.
How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
We will invite newcomers to keep joining our weekly meetups after the event.
Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
Most of the activities will be taken place on line (on google meet) or the in person event (interview) will be less than 10 people.
Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This is the first phase of activity plan for the year. With the successful implementation of this grant, we hope it provides the preparation needed to apply for the general support fund grant in future.

- In addition, there are uncertainties around COVID-19, we will take all necessary precautions and abide by the local regulations and guidelines during any in-person meetings.
Impact
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
Core metrics for increasing awareness and participation
- Number of events: at least 2 training events (for Wiktionary and Wikidata) and 4 edit-a-thons
- Number of participants: 10~20
- Number of new editors: 5~10
- Number of of articles created or improved: 50 on Wikipedia and 500 on Wiktionary
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 2-5 people (assuming 25% retention rate)
Core metrics for building the Paiwan language database
- Development on Paiwan Wiktionary: Adding at least 500 vocabularies or expressions on Paiwan Wiktionary with explanations and using examples (sentence). We will work to increase both the quality and quantity of Paiwan Wiktionary in the Incubator. We are looking forward to make the test project approved soon.
- Adding lexemes and items on Wikidata: Adding at least 500 lexemes on Wikidata.
- Audios or Videos uploaded on Wikimedia Commons: At least 4 original audio or video files will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons with Paiwan description.
- We also plan to document our learnings from our field work at the end of the project for further sharing with affiliates (doing similar work) in the region
