Open Festival is a project which looked at contribution of various images, audios, videos of the art, craft and culture of how various festival of a particular ethnic group (GA) is celebrated in the country.With this project we targeted the Ga states like Nungua, Teshie and Gamashie to capture various activities which happen in the celebration of their annual Homowo Festival

Nungua Homowo Festival

We started our first open festival journey with the people of Nungua. They celebrate their Homowo Festival in the early month of July 2019, we went to the Nungua township  to take key pictures of how they celebrate their festival and other activities that took place prior to the festival. In our journey we had the opportunity to learn a lot from the locals and they put in much effort in their celebration. The fascinating activity of their festival is when the fetish priestesses from various houses of Nungua come to the public grounds half-naked to display a dance which is known us Kpleejoo to the gods.

Volunteer and I for the project were able to capture some key activities or moments of the festival which cultural and artistic.

Chale Wote Street & Art Festival

The Chale Wote festival is an annual festival that brings artist of various works of life, diasporian and art lovers to have a week long of art festival in the Gamashie Township. The Chale Wote Street Festival is incorporated into the Homowo Festival of the people of Gamashie.

Volunteer and I were able to capture some key activities or moments of the festival which was cultural and artistic.

Teshie Homowo Festival

Our third and final project of Open Festival was at the Homowo festival held by the people of Teshie. With Teshie we had the opportunity to involved in some key activities thus the ban on singing  and drumming culture activities and also Kpashimo which literally means celebration by drumming and dancing around the town after the ban.

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

• What worked well?

We were able to go to each venue the festivals (Teshie Homowo, Nungua Homowo & Chale Wote Festival) to capture good quality pictures.

• What did not work so well?

1. We tried our best to get a tour guide who will aid us to strategic places to take strategic shorts or pics of which we did not get one.The reason was that we nearly had our items or tools (Cameras and Phone) ceased.
2. Volunteer were kind of slow with the upload of images but we are of the hopes that it will improve in the future because of their determination and passion.
3. My account for wikicommons was blocked during the project and was not able to make any upload until 18-11-19.
4. Community support from Open Foundation Wes Africa (OFWA) was very high and postive.

• What would you do differently next time?

1. Next time we would want improve upon our quality of pictures.
2. We would add videos to tell a story in our next open festival project.
3. Increasing the number of volunteers and also their speed of content upload.
4. We are arranging for a tour guide for our next project.

In conclusion we were very excited that we contributed pictures related to culture,arts and diversity of African festivity,we are looking forward to grow this project and many other activities related to this project in the future.

Grant funds spent

• Food (For team and volunteers) = 10 people x 10 days x GHC 20 food cost = GHC 2000.
• Transportation (Round trip for team and volunteers) = GHC 700
• Internet = GHC 1000.
• Total Amount = GHC 3700

• Miscellaneous (Previous Project Grant) = GHC 150 (This was to be used for printing [Swags & Other Materials]

I wish to keep this grant money to use for upcoming future project.

The funds remaining from this grant in the amount of GHC 150 were deducted from another grant payment for Grants:Project/Rapid/Open Festival 2.0.
