Project Goal edit

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors -- Interference Archive in conjunction with the Museum of the City of New York is excited to host this edit-a-thon as part of a day of programming, "Looking Beyond Suffrage" (http://www.mcny.org/event/looking-beyond-suffrage), related to the Beyond Suffrage exhibition at Museum of the City of New York. This edit-a-thon will build on conversations from the first part of the afternoon's programming, giving participants an opportunity to learn how to edit Wikipedia while channeling their interest in feminist activism.
  2. Add or improve content -- using reference material from the Beyond Suffrage exhibition, as well as publications from scholars presenting in the "Looking Beyond Suffrage" event, we will expand on Wikipedia's content about the suffrage movement in New York, as well as about feminist activism more broadly.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are hosting one editathon, which will include a training based on Art+Feminism's training materials as well as an introduction to the Beyond Suffrage exhibition.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The editathon is registered on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Museum_of_the_City_of_New_York/Beyond_Suffrage_Wikipedia_Edit-a-thon.
This editathon is co-organized by Interference Archive (who have loaned material for the Beyond Suffrage exhibition), and will be cross-promoted by both organizations. The Museum of the City of New York will also share information about the edit-a-thon through an e-blast to approximately 90K subscribers, a boosted Facebook event, social media posts (we have 51.2K Instagram followers, 62K Facebook followers, and 35.1K Twitter followers), paid social media advertising, and press outreach, as well as outreach to local community organizations that might be interested in participating. Interference Archive will publicize the event using our mailing list of approximately 3,800 subscribers, as well as through social media (we have 7,400 facebook followers, 3,300 twitter followers, and 4,600 instagram followers). In addition, our past events have been promoted through local media such as Brokelyn and Hyperallergic.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We are working with our network of Wikimedia editors to make sure that at least one of them is present for assisting at this event. Jen and Nora of Interference Archive will lead the event, having hosted two Art + Feminism editathons and an Indigenous Peoples' Justice editathon at Interference Archive.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We have excellent wifi and sufficient desks and chairs. In the past, we have had no difficulty with asking participants to bring laptops and cords. We have curated a selection of electronic resources that will provide ample quality source material for editing Wikipedia articles related to the Beyond Suffrage content.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will thank participants on their Talk pages after the event and invite them to continue editing.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

While this edit-a-thon is organized in conjunction with the same Interference Archive volunteers who are spearheading the Interference Archive Art + Feminism edit-a-thon (Grants:Project/Rapid/Interference Archive Art + Feminism edit-a-thon), separate grant requests have been submitted because funding for this event would go to Museum of the City of New York, and funding for the other event would go directly to Interference Archive.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

The venue, technology, and WI-FI are provided free of charge. Two of us (Jen and Nora) as volunteers at Interference Archive will be running this as our fourth Art + Feminism edit-a-thon over three consecutive years, and we feel equipped to give comprehensive guidance to editors. We are also reaching out to our network of Wikimedians to confirm that at least one of them will be available (we understand the huge number of edit-a-thons in New York City this time of year, so we're still working with them on evenly spreading their availability).

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  1. Food and drink (at $5 person)= $150
  2. Childcare through Babysitters Guild (bonded agency), 4 hr minimum x $50/hr x 1 caregiver = $200
  3. Supplies (name tags, printing) = $25 TOTAL = $375
