Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
We are organizing a day-long Edit-a-thon focused on creating new articles and improving existing articles about women artists. Training will be available on the day of the Edit-a-thon at Modern Fuel artist run centre in Kingston, ON. Volunteers have participated in a series of trainings since January to prepare them to help participants onsite at the drop-in event.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
The program will be advertised through an event Facebook page, Modern Fuel's website, and Facebook page for the department of Art History and Art Conservation at Queen's University. We will also post posters in the Kingston community and on campus.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
There will be at least two editors with a couple years experience to provide tutorials and one-on-one help during the event. There will also be approximately 5 or 6 more editors who have been doing Wikipedia training for the past two months who will be able to introduce newcomers to the basics and set them up to edit or create articles.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
The event will be hosted at Modern Fuel, an artist-run centre in Kingston, Ontario. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops, but Modern Fuel will have a couple on hand for people who don't. We will have a reference desk with resources on settler and indigenous women artists in Canada from Modern Fuel's library and a computer with access to Queen's University Library's catalog of digital books and journals for participants to use throughout the day. There will also be at least three art historians present, who work on women artists in different time periods, who will be available to help editors assess their content and structure their articles.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
The Facebook page will provide a platform for conversation after the event. We will post links to all of the articles that were created or edited at the event on the Facebook page. We also connect new editors with experienced mentors who will monitor the work done at the Edit-a-thon, answer questions, and offer feedback.
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of participants: 50
- Number of new editors: 40
- Number of of articles created or improved: 20
What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
We will have a team of people (experienced editors, art historians, and student volunteers) who will be available all day to help new editors will all stages of creating or editing Wikipedia articles, from identifying a topic that needs coverage/improvement to research to writing to using Wikipedia. These volunteers will also lead a series of Wikipedia tutorials and content brainstorming sessions throughout the day. We also have a public programming coordinator who is in charge of outreach, organization, and coordinating the schedule for the event. There will be two experienced childcare providers onsite from 11am to 5pm. The event will wrap-up with a keynote lecture by media artist Emily Pelstring, who will discuss her own work as a feminist artist who works with technology.
In-kind donations: Editors to lead tutorials and provide one-on-one help to new editors; Art historians to help with research, brainstorming and writing; Public programming coordinator; Access to e-books and scholarly journals from Queen's University; Venue and furniture; Internet access from Modern Fuel.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- Food and drinks = $200
- Childcare (6 hours, 2 caregivers, $20/hour) = $240
- Honorarium for keynote speakers ($100 x 2) = $200
- Miscellaneous supplies (art supplies for childcare, name tags, printing cheatsheets and instructions, large paper and markers for group brainstorming) = $150
