Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • The practice of having community organizers to promote the campaign among various communities rolled out very well. This not only helped the core organizing team to focus on other important aspects, but also helped in grooming the leadership of active users among respective communities.
  • With the above practice and engaging the Central Notice through the campaign period, enormously helped us to attract attention of the readers, and ultimately increase the participation. The main of the page of the campaign stood first and third in the list of most-viewed pages on Meta-Wiki in the months of February and March respectively. It can be observed from following links: February stats and March stats.
  • The campaign greatly helped to motivate the passive editors to get into action. Also, it helped us to identify various issues pertaining to Wikidata community in India. These include, more outreach activities in the northern parts of India, having an IRC to discuss the issues, organize advanced training sessions for highly active contributors to train them on the backstage working and technical aspects of Wikidata etc. These will be followed up in the coming months.
  • We have generated several lists of items from the basic categories related India. These can be seen at: Item lists. These lists helped the participants to easily get to the items related to India.
  • The outreach activity at IIIT Hyderabad, co-organized along with Swecha (NGO) went very well. Apart from the event, it got us a new contact that can help us to organize activities in Hyderabad. The organization's vision is also similar to that of Wikimedia movement.
  • What did not work so well?
  • As we had very less times (<20 days) during the initial stages of execution, such as ideation of the project, grant proposal and approval, central notice request, and the campaign start date i.e. 21 February 2018, the core organizing team experienced some rush at the beginning. However, that was later softened.
  • Due to short period of notice, the organizers of outreach activities reported slight inconvenience in getting the logistics into place. Also, had we had more time, there would have been better scope to organize more activities.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • Plan well in advance such that there isn't much stress on the organizers.
  • Organize more in-person training sessions and physical edit-a-thons.
  • Focus on task specific campaigns such label-a-thon, #refimprovement etc.
