Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are hosting one edit-a-thon on March 11, 2018 and will offer training during the event.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The Jewish Museum is fortunate to have a robust social media following and an actively engaged community of staff, members, and visitors. With more than 179,000 followers on Twitter, 45,000 followers on Facebook, 53,000 followers on Instagram, and 75,000 email subscribers we will digitally reach a large number of individuals who are already interested in our organization and likely to participate in our programming. We plan to partner with outside, relevant organization like the Council of American Jewish Museums, the Jewish Women's Archive, and Art+Feminism to spread the word to even more communities.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We will work with Art+Feminism to lead training with two or three experienced Wikimedia editors. Trained Jewish Museum staff members will also support editing and leading presentations about women artists in the Jewish Museum collection at the event.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will have access to training materials before the event and we will provide tutorials and demonstrations on-site during the edit-a-thon. The Museum will be able to provide a limited number of laptops, therefore all participants are requested to bring their own. With our own collection serving as inspiration for new and improved entries, access to the Museum's digitized collection (online) and exhibition history will ensure that participants can generate high quality content. We will also provide a list of reference references related to women artists. Our event space is also equipped with A/V tools and WiFi to support editors.
Part of the event will also entail artist-led gallery tours of our new collection exhibition Scenes from the Collection, featuring seminal women artists in the Jewish Museum collection. Participants will be engaged by the materials developed for the exhibition, and encouraged to explore our website for deeper online research.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will send an email to all edit-a-thon participants following the event to thank them for attending, to share stats on how many articles we successfully added or improved, and to ask for feedback. Additionally, we will share information after the event on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram with our entire community, and publish a recap on Stories.TheJewishMuseum.org with photos, details on the event's impact, and information on how to stay involved with the Museum and Wikipedia editing.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Founded in 1904, the Jewish Museum is one of the world's preeminent institutions devoted to the enjoyment, understanding, and preservation of art and Jewish culture from ancient to contemporary times. The Museum offers intellectually engaging, educational, and provocative exhibitions and programs for visitors of all religious and cultural backgrounds. The Museum’s distinguished exhibition history reveals a deep and rich exploration of Jewish culture and identity, as well as a dedication to commissioning new artwork and emerging and contemporary artists. The Museum maintains an unparalleled collection of 30,000 objects including fine art, photographs, archaeological artifacts, ceremonial objects, and broadcast media. More than 300 women artists are represented in our collection, many of which are significantly under-recognized or not acknowledged at all on Wikipedia. Participants at our first ever edit-a-thon will help us to upend this issue and provide essential, new information for all to appreciate.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 75
  3. Number of new editors: 25
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 25
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)
