Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- InterAccess is hosting an Edit-a-thon to improve and add information on women, female-identified, trans and non-binary artists working at the intersection of art and technology.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- We have added the information on our website and we will be promoting the event widely through newsletters and social media posts. We joined the Art+Feminism Slack channel, in which past organizers of editathons can give advice for future events and help improve the success of our event. Our collaborative partner Art Metropole will help us promote the event to their large network and we are in the process of reaching out to other important Toronto organizations, Art Gallery of Ontario, Feminist Art Gallery, Xpace, Critical Distance, Vtape, and more, to help us disseminate our event to people across Toronto. We also printed a postcard and will be distributing it in the neighborhoods and local community spots surrounding IA. Finally, the event is posted on the Art+feminism website and we also added the event to the Toronto WikiClub page, which we hope will bring out some experts!
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Yes, Zeesy Powers has been a long-time contributor to Wikipedia, creating over a dozen articles for women and other underrepresented artists - and contributing to many others. She regularly facilitates workshops on contributing to Wikipedia as part of the Art+Feminism edit-a-thons at arts and community organizations in Ontario and New York.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- We will host the event in our 750 sq ft studio space that has communal tables, chairs, and large windows that fill the space with light. We will invite participants to bring their own computers, but we also have 6 computers available for use. Our collaborative partner Art Metropole will be making a resource list of their archive/inventory that can be used for reference. They will also be bringing hard copy materials to the event. The archive manager will be making a brief presentation during the afternoon to discuss how to access their archive following the event.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- We will be creating a dedicated Slack channel for participants to stay in touch and remain connected following the event. We are hoping to host an editathon every year going forward and engage a community of editors to come back and mentor new editors each year.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- Our partner is Art Metropole, a not-for-profit organisation with a focus on the production, dissemination and contextualisation of artist-initiated publication in any media, especially those formats and practices predisposed to sharing and circulation.
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 1
- Number of participants: 30
- Number of new editors: 25
- Number of of articles created or improved: 75
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)
What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- We are excited that Zeesy Powers, experienced wikipedia editor, will host the first editathon at InterAccess this year. Art Metropole will help us promote the event and will make a brief presentation on how to access their archive and inventory.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- 1. Paid ads for social media promotion (Facebook, Instagram, etc) = $50
- 2. Food and drinks = $150
- 3. Miscellaneous supplies = $150 (name tags, printing cheatsheets, etc.)
- 4. Local travel for execution of Art Metropole Resource Library = $50
- 5. Promotional materials (design and printing of promotional postcard) = $300
- Total = $700 CAD
- Art Metropole is pleased to be partnering with IA to provide this important event in the community.
- I am very happy to endorse this event with InterAccess Toronto as the primary facilitator. I am a long-time facilitator of edit-a-thons at arts institutions, schools and universities in Toronto, Southern Ontario and Upstate New York. I approach facilitating as a collaborative effort based in a spirit of working together to build on a common project. I believe in teaching new editors the overall Wikipedia ecosystem, including talk pages and templates, in order to help them more effectively contribute to and maintain articles over the long-term. I personally have experience creating and improving articles, nominating articles for DYK, patrolling pages for vandalism, rating pages and working with images through Wikimedia Commons. I am currently working with WikiClub Toronto to develop simple methods of bringing WikiData into edit-a-thons.
