Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, I believe so. We were able to carry out all the events, with great success and with a sufficient number of people. The only problem, however, was the failure to hold the Paulista Museum editathon, which was replaced by editathons at Sesc Guarulhos. We will try to hold the Paulista Museum editathon again, in 2020, as described in this new Rapid Grant request, which was just approved, in the Arts + Feminism 2020 Campaign. We are already in negotiations with the institution again and, I believe, it is safe to say that we will hold the event because of the work and partnership through the Paulista Museum GLAM.
In the case of the editathon on Neuroscience, the focus of the event ended up being different. RIDC NeuroMat, which has always held and supported wikimedia events in partnership with Wiki Movimento Brasil, preferred, this time, not to focus on the subject of Neuromathematics, but to train librarians in the library of the institute where the research center is located, in the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, at the University of São Paulo (IME-USP).

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Two editathons about neuroscience. Editathon on Rehabilitation Sciences and two days of event (or two editathons) to train librarians of Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME-USP). Neuroscience editathons have been a tradition in the partnership between RIDC NeuroMat and Wiki Movimento Brasil for several years. However, this time, the research center preferred to support other topics. The editathon on Rehabilitation Sciences was made in partnership with a research center partner of NeuroMat, also at the University of São Paulo, where both are located.

In the second event, RIDC NeuroMat decided to train librarians at its institute, the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME-USP), and other departments of the University of São Paulo, to work on Wikipedia, following the initiative # 1Lib1Ref.

Two editathons about women, to decrease the gender gap on Wikipedia. Three editathons (#WikiFutFeminino I, II, III) in partnership with the Football Museum, to improve knowledge about women in football. These editathons came out exactly as planned and were extremely successful, with a very wide audience and even coverage by the Brazilian press.

The success of the first two events was so great that both the Museu do Futebol (Football Museum) and Wiki Movimento Brasil agreed to hold a third event.

One editathon about related subjects to the painter Eliseu Visconti. It was replaced by the editathon at Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa. The intention of the editathon about the painter Eliseu Visconti was to deal with subjects related to the universe of visual art, mainly paintings. It was not possible to carry out the editathon with Eliseu Visconti, but a project was developed and three lectures were given by members of Wiki Movimento Brasil, but without using the resources of this grant. The event was then replaced by the event at Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa. They both have GLAM-Wiki projects, so we thought that changing the institution, keeping the same general theme of the editathon, would not be a problem.
One editathon about related subjects to Paulista Museum It was replaced by two days of editathons held in partnership with Sesc Guarulhos. Unfortunately, this editathon was changed. We were unable to establish the event for the second half of 2019, due to renovations carried out in the museum building. However, as the partnership with the institution is solid, thanks to a GLAM, this editathon is scheduled to be held in the first half of 2020, with a gender gap theme, as part of the Arts + Feminism 2020 Campaign.

In place of this editathon, we held two days of content editing, as well as photographic ones, through a partnership with Sesc Guarulhos. Sesc is a very important cultural institution in the state of São Paulo, which has a tradition of offering free cultural events to people with low purchasing power.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

I believe that the main good factor, which worked better, was the gender gap theme. Events aimed at women have been working very successfully, especially when they are aligned with a hot topic - like football and even in the time of bigger events, like the Women's Football Cup. The group's idea, from now on, is to hold more events accompanied by other events or important dates. In addition to working with even more themes related to diverse groups and minorities.

  • What did not work so well?

Editathons do not always need a budget specifically for renting a space. Sometimes, the partner institution is able to offer a space with sufficient structure. Because of my inexperience with this, I noticed that I did not need the rental amount for all events, and initially, I believed that this would be the biggest expense for each event. So I preferred to do a few more events and add more event days, when it made sense, and use that money mainly for food.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Reserve less money to rent space with computers. Some events, depending on the theme, also manage to work with the participants taking their own laptops - however, not always, and it is necessary to assess the economic condition of the target audience.

Remaining funds edit

Do you have any remaining grant funds? Yes, there’s a amount left of R$ 891,39 (USD 248,29).

We would like to use this money to fund more Wiki Movimento Brasil’s editathons in Brazil again. We have a Rapid Grant for the Arts+Feminism 2020 Campaign, that was just approved, and this amount could be effectively used there.

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.
