Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- This is mainly an online project, and its page is located at ro:Proiect:Educație/Traduceri la UAIC. The project itself started as an initiative of a professor assistant of the UAIC (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași), going by username TranslationGeeks-IS. Online, I am planning to help – together with User:Andrei Stroe and User:Strainu – the organizer and the participants with organizing and, respectively, with editing. TranslationGeeks-IS expressed the wish to have somebody come to the university and organize hands-on events in which participants learn on Wikipedia's core principles and how to edit an article. Andrei Stroe and Strainu live in Bucharest, which is farther from Iași (400 km), so I volunteered to go from Chișinău (150 km).
- A series of 3 visits to the university are planned:
- 1st visit (December 13, 2017) will include a short introduction to Wikipedia, Wikipedia principles, Wikipedia in Romania, and the Education program. This will be followed by a demo on how to write articles. The demo will include three methods of editing: wikicode, visual editor (VE), and content translation (CX) – with focus on wikicode, as CX is not newbie-friendly and is quite buggy for Romanian, and TranslationGeeks-IS prefers their students to learn more about syntax on sites like wiki, so not VE. Demo will also include instructions on how to cite.
- 2nd visit (
sometime in February 2018March 26, 2018) will be a 'maintenance' meeting, in which I can answer to questions accumulated in first 2 months from students (that were not efficiently resolved online), and find what can be improved about the project.
- 3rd visit (sometime in June 2018) will be a conclusive meeting, in which results of the project will already be available and I can take part – representing Romanian Wikipedia – in any sort of ceremony or event TranslationGeeks-IS intends to organize – and help organizing it!
- All events will be in Romanian.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- This is the first working project on rowiki of the global initiative Wikipedia Education Program. Project has visibility in the small local community, and the results will be published on local village pump throughout the project and at the end, also on the Wikipedia română Facebook page.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- I have experience holding 'instructional' meetings on how to add and improve content at rowiki: I organized workshops three times in Chișinău, Moldova (my home city) – on architectural monuments, Moldovan women, and women again –, and once in Shkodër, Albania (invited by the awesome Albanian user group) – en:Wikipedia:Wiki Academy Albania 2017.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- According to TranslationGeeks-IS, classroom is equipped with PCs and projector equipment. Some students have laptops. There is Wifi at the university, and also a good 3G coverage.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- As we will have the emails and contact details of participating students, we will send them invitations for future writing contests such as CEE Spring.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- We hope that we will raise interest of other faculties and universities to join the Education project.
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 3. One introductory event (December 13), one middle-road event (March 26), one final event (June)
- Number of participants: ~45 (see list on ro:Proiect:Educație/Traduceri la UAIC)
- Number of new editors: hopefully 2 will keep contributing after the project ends; we know that the retention rate is globally very low
- Number of of articles created or improved: approx. 20 min-C-class articles. Currently 2 pilot articles (d:Q126793, d:Q431289); more articles will be added as the project goes
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): all ~45 students are expected to be involved in all 3 visits
What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- 50 USD for travel expenses. Bus round trip ticket between Chișinău and Iași is approx. 300 MDL, takes 2–3 hours (so no booking needed), 3 trips add up to 900 MDL, which is approx. 50 USD.

- Unfortunately at this point we don't have any other wikimedian closer to Iași. Travelling from Bucharest would be more expensive and time consuming.Strainu (talk) 12:09, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
- I'm Sorina Postolea, the university teacher involved in this project, and I fully support Giku in this. I want to involve my students (2 groups amounting to about 45 people) in the Wikipedia project. They are enrolled in a translation programme, so I think this experience will help them both professionally and personally. On the other hand, I think Wikipedia Romania still needs quality translations and quality texts, so it's a win-win situation. TranslationGeeks-IS (talk) 13:18, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
