This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2017-18 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? We were quite pleased with how the project went. We are glad to have managed to maintain our partnership with the Lamu Museum whose staff is always keen on getting students within their community to participate in the photo contests. We aim to have an even better pool of submissions next year as the country is finally adjusting to the new norm that came about with the pandemic.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
20 participants 27 participants We were able to support a few more participants than we expected.
700 images 154 images We were not able to achieve our goals in terms of number of images, however, we were pleased by the fact that we obtained more images than in the previous year.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? The participants generally understood the theme well and were very excited to go out and collect relevant media content. The students from Lamu really took the spotlight with this project.
  • What did not work so well? Some participants received their standard compensation for the photo contests but failed to upload any content.
  • What would you do differently next time? We are currently brainstorming on how to prevent the issue raised above from recurring.

Finances

edit

Grant funds spent

edit

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on. We spent a total of 168,650 KES to support the project activities broken down as follows:

  1. 108,000 to support the 27 participants. The 4,000 KES sent to each of them was to cater for transport costs, entrance fees, meals and any other cost they would encounter as they visited the relevant locations. We learnt from the previous year that we would save on money if we sent a common amount to each participants instead of our previous approach.
  2. 25,650 to cater for Data. Each of the participants received 950 KES to cater for the data used to upload the media files.
  3. 35,000 to cater for the prizes.

Remaining funds

edit

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.

Grant funds remaining amount to 350 KES (around 3 USD). We would like to use the remaining grant funds on our next photo contest which will be Wiki Loves Earth.

Anything else

edit

Anything else you want to share about your project? Wiki Loves Folklore is a very well run photo contest. The organizers are very prompt with their responses and there were general no hitches. Looking forward to the 2023 edition.
