The event will take place on November 19 and November 20, 2021, and will consist of a number of activities, including two panel discussions on being a woman in the music field in Latin America, a workshop on how to work on Wikipedia (delivered by Wikimedia Mexico), a workshop on gender-neutral language, and two networking sessions. The entire event is being organized in memory of Gisela Crespo Brito, a remarkable choir conductor from Cuba who passed away on August 4, this year.

  3. Add or improve content: create, edit or translte the biography of Latin American female and LGBTIQ+ musicians

Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The edit-a-thon we are currently planning includes a workshop where participants will be taught how to work on Wikipedia. However, the event will include other activities; namely, a panel discussion on being a female musician, a panel discussion on being a choir conductor in Latin America, a workshop on gender-neutral language, two networking sessions, the presentation of a book on hackactivism, and a Wikipedia editing session per se during which we intend to create the biography of Latin American female and LGTBIQ+ musicians.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

We're using social media channels, namely, Instagram (@editatonmusical), Facebook (/editatonmusical), and Twitter (@editatonmusical). However, we have already created an event on the Art + Feminism website and we intend to further promote the event on feminist platforms, such as La Almanaka.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We've been promoting the event on the social media channels mentioned above.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

Yes, Wikimedia Mexico and Art + Feminism members will deliver a workshop on how to edit Wikipedia and will attend the editing session itself.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

In general, they do, but we expect support from Wikimedia Mexico and Art + Feminism in the event of any issues.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will continue posting content on social media and we have prepared a form for participants to provide us with feedback. Additionally, we will create a mailing list through which we will be sharing content on Latin American female and LGTBIQ+ musicians even after the event.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

The event will be held online.

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The funds will be used after the event has been held with the purpose of providing participants and panelistas in Mexico with a token of our gratitude for having contributed to acknowledging the careers and contributions of women and LGTBIQ+ persons in the music industry. Additionally, since overseas shipment is considerably expensive, the funds will also be used to keep participants and panelists from other countries engaged following the event, in preparation for further editions.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: This is the first edition, which comprises several activities.
  2. Number of participants: We're expecting at least 100 attendees, but since we're not charging any fees, it is hard to know at this point how many people will actually take part.
  3. Number of new editors: It depends on the number of people who attend the event and who have no experience working on Wikipedia (this is something we ask in our registration form).
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: So far, we expect to create at least ten biographies during a two-hour editing session.
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

The entire organizing committee is composed of seven former UDLAP students (all of them are women), all of whom are planning the event during their free time. Neither will receive a compensation because the main purpose of the event is to honor Gisela Crespo Brito. No support has been, or will be, received from any organization or institution, since the event is being planned by a group a friends who wish to contribute to closing the gender gap on Wikipedia and the digital world. Each member has been contributing in their own way, either by contacting friends or colleagues or by creating copy for social media.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

1. Zoom subscription = $19.99 2. First Music Edit-a-thon notebooks = $7.33 x 100 notebooks = $733.00 3. First Music Edit-a-thon bookmarks $4.39 x 100 bookmarks = 439.00 4. Shipping within Mexico = $3.66 x 100 notebooks and bookmarks = $366.25 Total = $1,558.24
