The objective is to further improve on the global coverage of disabled athletes and the Paralympics, on Wikipedia and on other projects such as Commons and Wikinews.

Deliverable to accomplish the objective is to:

  • Create articles on notable Paralympic competitors who don’t have an English and Simple Wikipedia article;
  • 3 articles on English Wikipedia associated with Summer Paralympic sport in Australia nominated for GA by the end of November;
  • 12+ news articles to be published on English Wikinews with 5+interviews of Paralympic competitors, with the audio recorded to be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons;
  • Video reporting and video of press conferences, uploaded on Wikimedia Commons to be used on Wikinews and possibly Wikipedia articles;
  • Updates to all notable biographies of Paralympic competitors on English Wikipedia;
  • 40+ Portrait photographs of Paralympic competitors to be used in notable biographical articles;
  • Organise a Wikimedia meet in Rio to be advertises on English and Portuguese Wikipedia;
  • At least five or more IRC sessions while attending the Paralympics to better coordinate the needs of Wikimedians efforts in terms of photographs;
  • Update relevant Wikidata entries to include links to commons categories, to ensure all content is linked through Wikidata to make it accessible to all language communities;
  • Post Rio Paralympics follow up with interested parties with presentations discussing my efforts of the games;
  • Paralympic workshops in Australia, post games;

Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

  • Identify events and press conferences to attend
  • Organise interviews with competitors/coaches/teams, including taking photographs
  • Create Wikinews articles on events and interviews
  • Process photographs and upload onto Commons for use in Wikipedia and Wikinews articles
  • Create presentations for the post Rio Paralympics follow up with interested parties on my efforts of the games
  • Organise or assist with Paralympic workshops in Australia, post games

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

I'm targeting the wider community and will be reaching out to the community via social media, Wikimedia Australia community mailing list and on Wikimedia projects (English/Simple Wikipedia, English Wikinews and Wikidata). I will be posting shortly to Paralympic project on English Wikipedia and on the Water Cooler on English Wikinews. During the games I will do outreach during the Paralympics on Twitter and Facebook to share my free-use licensed content.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

As a result of attending the Rio Paralympics;
  • Improved articles on Wikipedia, with photographs and content
  • Free-use photographs on Commons of the Rio Paralympics, to be used on any project
  • Improving Wikidata, with updates done to ensure all entries are accessible to all languages, including commons categories

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. Number of total participants: 1
  2. Number of articles created or improved: 10+
  3. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 250+
  4. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 50+
Goal is to do more than the above minimum that I've set.

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

I have received media accreditation for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games though the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC). Requesting funding though the APC, which is the National Paralympic Committee in Australia and receives limited Australian Government funding, isn't possible as they do not give out grants and applying for this grant avoids any accusations of COI issues of paid advocacy.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense:

  • Travel: (round trip Sydney-Rio de Janeiro): US$1500
  • Accommodation:
Sydney/Auckland: US$98 (one night at the airport)#
Rio de Janeiro US$38.00 (R$120) x 7 nights = US$266 (R$840) [this is booked (not yet paid for) but free cancellation ends on August 20] Booking cancelled on August 20 but still able to get accommodation at similar pricing.
  • Insurance: US$70
  • Meals: US$105 (US$15 x 7 Days)

  • Total US$2039
Notes:
#: The overnight stay in Sydney is needed as the flight on the Sunday departs at 9:30am and I’m unable to get a flight that departs Wagga Wagga early enough. If the early flight is booked out, the next cheapest and available flights will require an overnight stop over in Auckland, NZ and the $US98 covers a stay in Sydney or Auckland.
The budget is slightly over the US$2000 limit, however Mjohnson (WMF) suggested that Rapid as this is more of a project and noted on the TPS grant talk page that she instructed me to apply for US$2039.
