Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we were able to meet our overall goals and contented with the outcomes of the project. We had good participation of student/budding developers, mentors contributing to Wikimedia and volunteers who made this event successful. In this 2 day event we majorly touched on overall Wikimedia projects and possibilities of where contributions are needed. We also had training sessions on Wikimedia API, Wikimedia Commons and Media Wiki UserScript. As a result the student developers came up with their own problem statements and solutions for the existing Good First Issues, resolved bugs and also contributed to the existing Wikimedia projects. There was an overall participation of 100 who played various roles at the event. The first two days of the hackathon we had trainers which included 2 staff members from WMF. In parallel the Hackathon was carried out by the participants followed by displaying the outputs of the projects on the final day.

Number of newcomers who will contribute to Wikimedia projects after the sessions: 50 55 Almost most of the participants were new to Wikimedia projects and so beginner friendly tasks were assigned to them to get familiar with the projects as part of this Hackathon
Number of contributors who will participate in Wikimedia track of the Hackathon: 40-50 No. of participants who contributed to Wikimedia Hackathon: 60 We invited top 60 participants post a proposal screening which was held by the institutions individually. The final participants formed teams of 2-5 to work on the hackathon projects collaboratively.
Number of women and other marginalized gender groups (who self identify) who take part in the Hackathon: 30-40 Gender Diversity: 35 (identified as women)

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • The Hackathon had training and mentoring sessions by User:Jayprakash12345 and User:Neechalkaran who guided the students throughout the Hackathon. Also we had guest talks from User:SSethi (WMF) and User: PDas (WMF) helpedd the students to get a clarity of thoughts on how to approach Wikimedia based projects.
  • The student developers of the Hackthon were beginners to Wikimedia but with their technical background they were able to participate in the projects.
  • The participants were allowed to work on the projects of their interests as teams and present their outputs. These outputs were verified and suggested improvements by User:Jayprakash12345 and User:Neechalkaran
  • The organisers and volunteers also learned about hosting such hybrid events and handling the participant requirements.
  • The participants found the merch/swag items helpful and interesting.
  • The diversity in the participation was well-balanced.
  • What did not work so well?
  • We did have good outputs from the event but an even more engaging 100% in-person event was not achievable at that moment given also the COVID restrictions in the region. Yet with our capacity we helped 20 participants with internet data pack purchase and invited a few to the venue.
  • Although we had mentors and faculty members from the instituion who helped the students with their queries the participants needed more 1-1 practise sessions.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • We would make the next event in-person with more mentors from Wikimedia communities.
  • The event would have a day dedicated only for talks and workshops and followed by the Hackathon. This way the event could be little more elaborate in covering a lot of topics and speakers.
