Project Goal

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

1. Recruit new editors – a goal of every editathon we host is to boost the number of people at Emory, especially students, who edit Wikipedia. We will give them info about the local Georgia Piedmont Wikimedians group (of which I am a member) to keep them in touch about future editathons and other events.
2. Increase skills for existing editors – We always get return editors, so while this is beginner-friendly, we like to challenge experienced editors to grow by trying something new.
3. Add or improve content – We aim to add and improve content on women artists snd women (broadly defined) in general. Our event will be part of A+F but we are broadening our scope to increase attendance, as Emory is not an arts-focused school. We will be tracking our edits on the A+F dashboard.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The funding requested is for one editathon/training session, although we are doing others this year.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

Fliers, email, public forums, announcement/event listing on Emory University homepage, outreach to Emory faculty and students

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, we have five experienced editors hosting the event who will be present for training and guidance.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

A full training on how to edit will be given to attendees as well as context about the event theme. Experienced editors will be available to help and answer questions throughout the duration of the event. We will provide a list of suggested articles to edit, an editing skills cheatsheet, and access to the web and many databases for research.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will collect emails of anyone interested in participating in future Atlanta-area events as well as engage with them on their user pages.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We want to make this year extra special since it's our 5th anniversary of participating in A+F. We also expect the number of participants to increase from past years.

Impact

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

1. Number of events: 1
2. Number of participants: 30
3. Number of new editors: 15
4. Number of of articles created or improved: 10

Resources

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have no funding as of yet. We are applying for the A+F microgrant and some funding from Emory is possible but not secured or guaranteed. Emory Libraries Wikipedia Group, comprised of a group of librarians at Emory University, are organizing the event. I am the primary instructor and a Wikipedia consultant for the Emory community in my job role, and also volunteer with Georgia Piedmont Wikimedians at other events.

Food and beverages (dinner) to feed at least 30 people: $250

Marketing materials and publicity: $150

Misc extras and unexpected costs: $100

• I am thrilled to participate in Emory Libraries' 5th anniversary A+F edit-a-thon. We are reaching out to students early, so they can help us increase participation numbers for new student editors. Food often gets students in the door, but we hope they take much more away from these events...maybe a new passion. As of Jan 6, 2020, only 18.19% of English Wikipedia's biographies are about women!?! So much more work to be done.Thanks for considering our grant.
