International Center of Photography/Art+feminism Edit-a-thon 2020
In hosting our second Art+Feminism Wikimedia Edit-a-thon, ICP plans to excavate the often erased labor and histories of women and LGBTQ+ photographers that have been overshadowed by a dominant male narrative. Our International student community will utilize works and resources from ICP's exhibitions, collections and alumni database to update Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism.

Project Goal

edit

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors to ICP and cultivate a community of editors by giving our international student base the skills, knowledge and confidence to become active members of the Wikipedia community.
  2. Increase skills for existing editors, with a focus on outreach to women and LGBTQ+ individuals.
  3. The canon of photography has a storied male dominated history that leaves out or erases the practices and labor of women and LGBTQ+ individuals. A major goal of this edit-a-thon is to improve content for women and historically underrepresented folks in photography’s history both by lifting up the photographer and subject’s stories through utilization of our exhibitions and alumni network.

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The International Center of Photography (ICP) will be hosting an all-day edit-a-thon on Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 11 AM- 5 PM that will engage all sectors of the organization- from the school, museum, and the archive. This will be ICP’s second Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon. During this all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries, participants will focus on re-crafting Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism, culling from ICP’s Exhibition, Collections and Alumni Database. The edit-a-thon will offer two opportunities for training sessions at 11AM and 1PM and consist of programming in addition to editing articles. Here is the link to last year's event ---> https://www.icp.org/events/icp-x-art-feminism-wikipedia-edit-a-thon

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

First, ICP will notify those that participated in our first edit-a-thon in March of 2019. ICP will then heavily target our student population through on-the-ground poster campaign to reach our students in addition to making in-classroom presentations leading up to the event. The event will also be promoted in our e-newsletter and through on-site signage at the admissions desk and throughout the Center. We will list the programs in an array of online platforms geared towards arts audiences as well as promote to our neighbors, including the high schools and libraries nearby.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

ICP has partnered with Art+Feminism for two programs and will again. Last year we brought on co-founder Jacqueline Mabey to lead training sessions. This year, training will be facilitated and coordinated through the Art + Feminism NYC Ambassador, Megan O’Hearn. The producer of the event, Jacque Donaldson, Senior Manager of Public Programs is an active editor on Wikipedia and has hosted a successful edit-a-thon in 2019.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

ICP will have 5-10 additional laptops and tablets with Wi-Fi, available for editors to use on site. The edit-a-thon will primarily take place in our library at our brand-new integrated school and museum center at 79 Essex Street in Manhattan. In this space, we will pull primary and secondary sources from our library collection on the artists chosen to edit. To help guide participants, we will create a visual “edit-a-thon” board to track the artists pages being edited. Each artist will have a name card with specific areas their Wikipedia pages can expand on. (For example, Liz Sales - provide additional biography information, expand exhibition history, etc.). Members from the ICP community, such as faculty, alumni, and staff will also be trained and on site to assist with questions.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

After the event, the library will host a display installation of books from the edited artists as well as create a poster highlighting what we achieved during the edit-a-thon. We will also make all of the training materials available to the public in the library and will have a signup sheet to gauge interest for future editing events. This event will be hosted by ICP bi-annually.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Since our founding, ICP has presented 75 solo exhibitions by women artists and several additional group exhibitions focused on work by women, including, most recently, Multiply, Identify, Her (May—September 2018), featuring an inter-generational group of contemporary women artists whose work explores representations of identity. Since 2012, we have hosted ICP Spotlights, an annual luncheon honoring the contributions of women in visual arts and film. The museum’s new public program series, Dismantling the Gaze, considers looking, power, and visual culture vis-a-vis the #MeToo moment through conversations with contemporary artists, visual journalists, academics, and cultural critics.
