Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
- Recruit new editors, particularly women, POC, and non-binary participants.
- Increase skills for new and existing editors in Wikipedia editing.
- Add or improve content on 19th and 20th century women, non-binary, and trans architects, landscape architects, and preservationists in the English Wikipedia.
Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- The event, entitled Architecture + Feminism, will include a pre-event training based on Art+Feminism's training materials, followed by a four-hour Edit-A-thon. This will be the second Architecture+Feminism event hosted at 2426 in Los Angeles; we hope to garner enough support to make it a yearly campaign during National Women’s History Month in the US, putting into action together two initiatives; to recruit and train new editors, and improve content on female and gender non-conformists architects, activists and scholars of the built environment. This year, we’ll also be sharing our training materials and previous experience by helping to co-organize three other Edit-A-Thon events across the region; Otis College of Art and Design (Mar 6), University of Southern California School of Architecture (Mar 22), and Escuela Libre de Architectura (Mar 27).
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- The event will be held in Mid-City Los Angeles, close to USC. It will be advertised to the students, faculty, and surrounding community at large in the following ways:
- Registration on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard and Art+Feminism.
- Creation of Facebook event.
- Creation of RSVP form.
- Posting banner ad on the 2426 gallery’s website.
- Email notification through Roundhouse curatorial platform listserv, Instagram and Facebook, and Website.
- Email through departmental listservs for USC’s MFA, M.Arch, B.Arch programs.
- Email through student group listservs for USC Student Assembly for Gender Empowerment, the Undergraduate Student Government Diversity Taskforce, the Graduate Student Government.
- Printing posters and distributing flyers on USC campus.
- Printing posters and distributing flyers at libraries in close proximity; Washington Irving Los Angeles Public Library and Clark Library.
- Direct communication with students and faculty at three other Edit-a-thons we're co-organizing in March; Otis College of Art and Design, USC School of Architecture and Escuela Libre de Architectura during which we will advertise the upcoming event.
- Discussing a partnership with the United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council (which includes the neighborhood council Arlington Heights, Angelus Vista, Harvard Heights, West Adams Heights, West Adams Avenues, Western Heights, Kinney Heights, Gramercy Park, and Jefferson Park)to further promote the event to the local community.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- We will have two editors to lead a pre-event training, and at least two experienced editors available at all times throughout the event for help and feedback with participants.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- We will provide the following editing support systems for participants:
- How To Edit Wiki Handout
- List of Articles and Stubs to Work On
- Architecture+Feminism Online Library (free of access digital articles, archival materials)
- Architecture+Feminism Little Library (a cache of printed articles and bookshelf of hard copy books) We will provide the following equipment support systems for participants:
- Wifi internet connections
- Limited number of laptop computers
- Three (3) monitors (for screen-sharing)
- Two (2) projectors (for group training and demonstration) We’ve asked participants to bring laptops if possible.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- We will follow up with participants via social media posts within three (3) days of the event, email correspondence within seven (7) days of the event, and a website post within fourteen (14) days of the event. The email to participants will distill relevant analytics information from the dashboard along with photographs documenting their work at the editathon. As part of the email, we’ll thank all who attended and include a link to a brief survey with questions about how to steer, shape and scale Architecture+Feminism into yearly Los Angeles event.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- First, to our knowledge, Architecture+Feminism is first and only LA Art+Feminism editathon held at an independently-run space. This will be our second year, and we are hoping to set precedent for other like-minded artist-run spaces, collectives, and collaborations to have yearly Wikipedia events. Second, we believe architecture represents an important part of cultural production where “gender trouble” is severely pronounced, and,therefore, it is crucial to act upon it.
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets: We hope to familiarize new publics with both the process of editing Wikipedia and with the powerful impact of gender in architecture practice and historiography. In line with the stated aim of making a significant contribution to gender discourse in architecture in Southern California, we aim to engage at least thirty participants from Los Angeles, facilitate Wiki access to twenty new student editors, and create or improve fifty articles during the event.

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- The collective-run gallery in Mid-City Los Angeles, 2426ww, is offering us an in-kind donation of space, seating, Wifi for the duration of the event. Brendan Shea and Noémie Despland-Lichtert, who are organizing the event, will provide academic sources, Wikipedia mark-up training and one-on-one support during the event.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- We hope to receive 725USD to cover drinks, snacks, materials and childcare for 20 participants during four (4) hour event.
- Food and canned drink = $200 ($10 x 20 people)
- Coffee = $25 ($12.50 x 2 bags)
- Supplies = $50 (name tags, markers printing costs, Art+Feminism buttons, etc.)
- Graphic Design = $150 (Since the event focuses on promoting the visibility of women, POC, and non-binary creatives, we hope to have a stipend to hire a female artist, architect or collaborative to put together the graphic identity of the event promotion)
- Speaker Fees = $200 (Since the event will map, document, and archive the creative practices of women, POC, and non-binary folks in Los Angeles, we are hoping to invite two guest speakers to give context, talk about lack of representation, and shed light on ongoing research, practice, and activism on gender, sexuality and design; Sarah Williams, the founder and director of the Women Center for Creative Work, and Andy Campbell, professor and author of the 2019 book Queer by Design)
- Childcare = 100$ (25$ x 4) Total = $725 USD
