Project GoalEdit

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors

We aim 30 persons to create new accounts for these events. Among them, we project at least three people who will keep editing continuously.

  1. Increase skills for existing editors

We have 10 inexperienced editors who regularly participate in our past editing events. We will raise them to be able to contribute by their own, without experienced Wikipedian support.

  1. Add or improve content

We will create four new articles, and upload photos of Okazaki city on to Wikimedia Commons.

Project PlanEdit

Edit

Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?Edit

Tokai Knowledge Net will be launched in the spring of 2020 as a network of individuals belonging to organizations (libraries, museums, museums, companies, etc.) involved in the accumulation, provision and utilization of local "knowledge". As part of practices of this new organization, we are currently planning to host two editathons.

In May 2020, we will hold an Wikipedia Town event in cooperation with the local government, libraries and NPOs of Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture. We already have had meetings for discussion, with Okazaki's key persons, cooperating organizations and libraries in 2019, as well as events to understand and study Wikipedia contributions. We will expect the participation from local residents and local institutions in this event. The purpose of this editathon is to contribute the information of their city by their own hands, to have an interest in local information and to enhance to have senses of ownership of their information. "Oka Building Department Store" at Higashi Okazaki Station will be a subject for editing. This has been one of the symbols of the development of the post-war Okazaki, is scheduled to be demolished in 2020 due to aging. Keeping photos and records of this building along with the history of the local community on Wikipedia is meaningful to the local community.

In November 2020, we plan to hold "WikiGap in Aichi", to contribute articles about women who have contributed to the local history of Aichi and women's participation in society. This event also aims to let existing Wikipedia contributors be aware of gender, and to develop women's organizations and women of all ages who have never contributed before as Wikipedia contributors. Although there already are NPOs and institutions in Aichi Prefecture that work on gender equality and women's rights, there is a gap with the working generations on Wikipedia editing. Through this project, senior Wikipedia editors, gender organizations and libraries will work together to create new connections that will host future editathons.

In both events, we will also provide opportunities for pre-learning and follow-up of articles after implementation, and will try to create high-quality articles. We plan to change the above plan and implement it online due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

1) We uploaded old photographs of Okazaki City, which remain in the "Oka Building Department Store" at Higashi Okazaki Station, which was one of the symbols of the development of Okazaki after the war in October, to Wikimedia Commons. The Editorson will be held online.

2) In September, we are planning to hold "WikiGap in Aichi" online to create an article on "Women who have contributed to the history of Aichi's hometown and women's participation in society".We teach participants that they can borrow materials from the library or utilize digital archives to collect materials. We will edit online based on the collected materials.

Edit

How will you let your community know about the event?Edit

We will inform Wikimedia editors, Wikipedia Town participants, library officials, and citizens who have participated so far respectively, and will also publicize them on a Facebook page.

In order to form a cooperative relationship with the library and other related facilities, we will go to the facility, give an opportunity to explain, and publicize.

Edit

Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?Edit

We have built relationship with three (3) Wikipedians who are able to contribute high-quality articles of Tokai area (which includes Aichi) and to teach edits, through editathons we coordinated since 2017. The user name of Wikipedia cooperating with the event is aboshi, pi 3%, Asturio Cantabrio. We will ask for editorial guidance and a lecture on Wikipedia's philosophy for these upcoming two events.

Edit

Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?Edit

We will call for participants to bring their laptops that have WiFi capability in advance.

The WiFi environment in the venues themselves will be used, when the event will be co-hosted with the venue organization. Or we will prepare a rental cellular-WiFi routers.

Participants will consist of two types: editors who have an understanding and experience of Wikipedia philosophy and who are totally beginners. We divide finding, reading, and writing materials into several steps. Worksheets to support such steps are used in a frame where anyone can understand and work on how to edit. Any questions about the rules of edits will be handled by Wikipedia editors with corresponding skills.

Edit

How will you engage participants after the event(s)?Edit

We will provide regular learning and online consultation opportunities with experienced Wikimedia editors.

We already have hosted such forum where participants can develop their skills.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events 2
  2. Number of participants 20
