Project idea edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve? edit

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Romanian teachers are increasingly giving students homework on Wikipedia without previous experience and consulting with the community, which leads to bad articles and a bad experience for both students and wikipedians.

What is your solution? edit

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
There are three main areas we'd like to tackle:

  • establish ambassadors in all major university centers to allow other teachers a local connection that they can contact for advice
  • create a few standardized, yet flexible ways of delivering these courses
  • teach wikipedians how to detect such homework projects early and to reach out to the students for more information.

We are a small and geographically concentrated group and we cannot maintain the level of involvement we had in previous years, thus we want to standardize as much as we can and offload some of our offline work to individuals within target universities and our on-wiki work to interested patrollers.

Project goals edit

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  • Have a majority of standardized, medium-length, well-referenced articles as outputs of these projects.
  • Ensure each university center that had projects in 2018 or earlier has at least 1 local contact that can train new teachers in running a project on Wiki.

Project impact edit

How will you know if you have met your goals? edit

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (e.g. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Do you have any goals around participation or content? edit

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  • total participants: 200
  • newly registered: not applicable (likely identical or very close to the total number of participants)
  • Number of content pages created or improved: 250
  • no article should be below 1000B
  • no more than 50% of created articles have maintenance tags
  • at least 1% of participants should still edit 3 months after the course is finished

Project plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
There are 2 main components for the project:

  • writing documentation on how to deliver such a course, including how to approach unknown edits that seem school assignments
  • field work continuing existing projects and establishing new ones.

Documentation & on-wiki edit

  1. build ro:Proiect:Programe_educative to contain a comprehensive list of all of our programs, including contact persons
  2. build a page detailing the steps needed for starting such a project; at the end of the project it should contain at least 2 different scenarios (translations and new articles)
  3. build a guide for patrollers to detect and approach students and review it with existing patrollers and admins to identify other potential school assignments that we might have missed

Field work edit

Existing projects

There are three existing projects that have already an established M.O. Each require at least 1 on-site visit per semester from a Wikipedian to present the work method and train the trainers and teachers and continuous follow-up through email and social media:

  1. History faculty of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca - deliverables include having a campus ambassador
    • three visits from Bucharest, two in the spring semester and one in the fall semester (the number is higher because we will group these with the ones in Târgu Mureș, see below)
    • customized email training
  2. Arabic studies master program at the University of Bucharest
    • a single one-hour presentation at the beginning of the fall semester
    • customized social-network interactions (likely Facebook group)
  3. Modern languages at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University
New projects
  1. Petru Maior University of Târgu Mureș
Potential projects

We have identified two more courses that contributed to Wikipedia and require our attention:

  1. Applied foreign languages program at the University of Bucharest
    • we have contacted 2 teachers here; timeline TBD, but likely 2 presentations per semester and some social-network interactions
  2. Communication and social sciences faculty at the Politehnica University of Timișoara
    • contact person TBD, we're hoping for at least one visit and potentially involving one more Wikipedian except WMROMD members
Future opportunities

We will maintain a 20% buffer for any future projects that might appear naturally or as part of the activities in this projects. These project will generally have the same kind of activities as the ones above. For reference,

Budget edit

How you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table later if needed.) Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!
Much of the data is taken from previous projects: 1 [[1]]

  • 3 two-day visits in Cluj/Târgu Mureș (from Bucharest)
    • Transport: 3 x $100 = $300
    • Meals and accomodation: 3 x (2 x $20 + $35) = $225
    • Local transport: 3 x $20 = $60
  • 2 visits in Iași (from Chișinău)
    • Transport: 2 x $20 = $40
    • Meals: 2 x $20 = $40
  • 2 visits to Timișoara (from Bucharest)
    • Transport: 2 x $100 = $200
    • Meals: 2 x $20 = $40
    • Business Cards: 3 x $15 = $45
  • Promotional materials and prizes for students: $350
  • Office supplies, mail etc.: $100
  • Reference materials: $100
  • new projects and incidentals: 20% of the above = $300

Community engagement edit

Community input and participation helps make projects successful. How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve during your project?
We will announce the project at the Romanian Wikipedia Village Pump and will continue to send updates as we develop the page with advice to the patrollers. We will also extend invitations for local users to participate in our events. However, based on past experiences, we planned this project without any other Wikimedian involved. Any such involvement will be an welcomed bonus.
