Wikipedia and related free-knowledge projects represent largely untapped open educational resources and practices for the equitable teaching of communication, research, writing, and digital citizenship across multiple disciplines. This project grant will support the research and writing of an open access book entitled "Wikipedia and Beyond: Open Education for an Equitable Future."
NB: I have received a contract offer from MIT Press as of Dec. 8 2022. My co-author and I have not yet signed the contract, however, because we are still negotiating terms related to the open access fee (they have asked for 15k and we are hoping to come to an agreement about a smaller figure). But the proposal has already been peer reviewed positively and recommended by the editorial board.

The bulk of the budget will be used to purchase course releases for the primary author and researcher (Vetter). The budget also includes a request for 3,000 in travel money to support Vetter's attendance at conferences to disseminate the research, and 7,000 to support open access costs at MIT Press.

This book will have a significant impact on the movement because it invites higher education professionals in communication, writing, information literacy, and related fields to engage Wikimedia projects as communities for open educational practices and resources. This book addresses and aligns with the 2030 Strategic goal of knowledge as service by challenging higher education professionals to utilize Wikimedia projects sites for open educational practices, training and guiding new movement participants. This book also addresses the strategic goal of knowledge equity by spreading awareness of issues related to systemic biases and uneven access to knowledge and knowledge resources.

Matthew A. Vetter is an Associate Professor of English and affiliate faculty in the Composition and Applied Linguistics PhD program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As of fall 2022, Matt has taught 20 college-level courses that implemented a Wikipedia-based writing assignment. Matt has also participated in two professional development courses relevant to the focus of this book: 1) a Wiki Scholars program focused on improving COVID-19 related articles in Wikipedia, and 2) a Wikidata training program meant to teach professionals how to engage and teach with Wikidata, both offered by Wiki Education in 2021.
