Yoruba Wikimedians User Group is a group of Yoruba language Wikimedians committed to nurturing, developing, improving, and promoting Yoruba language Wikipedia, and other related projects such as the Yoruba Wiktionary in Wikimedia incubator, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia projects. We aim to promote the use of Yoruba Wikipedia, and Yoruba Wiktionary through various outreach efforts and to support people in western Nigeria to contribute to knowledge in the Yoruba language.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

ChallengesEdit

  1. Low volunteer native speakers for Yoruba Wikipedia and, Wiktionary.
  2. Low awareness about the Yoruba Wikipedia
  3. Lack of partnership#Inadequate community supports
  4. Lack of capacity building initiatives or programs

Proposed solutionsEdit

  1. We aim at recruiting more native speakers for Yoruba Wikipedia through various outreach efforts, awareness campaigns, contents drive, central notice banner campaign, partnership with the mission-aligned organizations, and, social media networks.
  2. We aim at using various strategies such as online promotion using a popular skit maker, Wiki Radio Show, Take Yoruba Wikipedia to Street campaign which involves community members’ street walk for Yoruba Wikipedia with drums sets, with banners and distributing fliers for people including passerby.
  3. We aim to partner with a mission-aligned organization such as academic institutions, the National Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture (we already met with this institution), students associations such as the National Association of Yoruba Students.#We plan to organize several capacity-building programs such as training on Yoruba Wikipedia editing, Wikidata and data visualization, how to use various tools, grant-making, and reporting, program or project evaluation, Universal Code of Conduct, and community-building.
  4. We aim to support community members, a mission-aligned group with small funds (not more than USD 500) that have good projects that could advance our objectives. We also plan to subsidize the internet data cost for active members of the community who could not afford to purchase internet data.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We plan to achieve these goals through:

Contents generations

  1. Contents drives – We aim to organize and participate in content drives such as edit-a-thons, translation-a-thons, contests such as Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Monuments, WikiGap, Wiki Campaign for Human Right, 1L1ref, WPWP, AfroCine, etc. We plan to collaborate with new and existing language-focused user groups in Nigeria.
  2. GLAM – Documentation of indigenous works unique to the Yoruba people and culture such as Adire, pottery, blacksmith, local oil making, drum-making, hair-making, mat-making, broom-making, wine-tapping, Garri-making, fufu-making, basket-weaving, local fishing, etc. We will document at least 20 audiovisuals of these works and upload at least and the Internet Archives will host our documented materials in perpetuity.

8. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Our work on audiovisual recordings will contribute rich content about endangered vocational works of the Yoruba people that are not well documented under an open license. Many of these vocational works are no longer being practiced. For example pottery. We plan to document each and every step of the production. This type of content and knowledge are not available under a free license either for use on a Wikipedia article or for other educational purposes.

Our collaboration with the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture will help provide materials that are not easily accessible and useful to write on topics that are relevant to readers.

9. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Advocacy, Human Rights

10. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities? Please note, we had previously asked about inclusion and diversity in terms of CONTENTS, in this question we are asking about the diversity of PARTICIPANTS. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Linguistic / Language, Digital Access

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

Our participants, depending on the project are young adults and adults who speak and write the Yoruba language at any level.

We hope to retain them through mentorships programs to keep them engaged with the Yoruba Wikipedia and Wiktionary activities.

Other ways to retain volunteers include but not limited to the following:

  1. Yoruba Wiki Fan Clubs – The Yoruba Wikimedians User Group has a Wiki Fan Club at the University of Lagos, and we are already working on a fan club at Lagos State University. We plan to increase the number of our fan clubs and these clubs will serve as focal points for Yoruba language and linguistics students in these academic institutions. They will organize periodic or monthly meetups to engage their members with technical supports and other forms of support from the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group.
  2. Engagement and building capacity for staff and networks of Yoruba-focused organizations: We plan to work with language-focused organizations, particularly Yoruba language-focused organizations or groups who will continue to engage the people within their network on how to contribute to Yoruba Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other related Wikimedia projects.
  3. Meetup – There would be a monthly meetup with a mix of new and established editors and each month will have its theme and activities tailored towards understanding the challenges of new editors and improving their works. Each month, the most positive and active editors will be appreciated with merchandise.
  4. Small funding support - We plan to award small funding support, not more than USD 500 for individuals, groups, and mission-aligned organizations with pragmatic and high-impact projects to advance our objectives. This would give the grantees a sense of belonging and encourage them to do more and stay in the community.

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

We plan to train participants on the UCOC. This will enable them to understand the minimum expected behavior required by all participants. They would fully be aware that the UCOC and our long-term Friendly Space Policy are in place.

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

Oui

13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

Yes, we plan to work with the existing Wikimedia User Group in Nigeria we are already consulting with the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria on our proposed Yoruba Indigenous Vocational Work documentation Projects.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

Oui

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

We would be working together with the mission-aligned non-Wikimedian partners such as Yoruba Academy, Atelewo, Egbe Akomolede ati Asa Yoruba. They would partner with us on our contents drives, contests, and campaign and awareness programs. They would provide a training hall and help with promotion on their various social media networks.

The International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture for example will provide the venues and the materials such as books, newspaper archives written in the Yoruba language that volunteers needed to write the encyclopedia, and Wiktionary.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

Each of the works carried out in this proposal will be evaluated and the learning from the evaluation reports would be useful in shaping our directions on future sustainability and scalability.

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Ensure Equity in Decision-making

18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.
