Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

This year, the WPWP campaign was launched on the 1st of July 2023 and runs through August. A total of 33 Wikimedia affiliates in 27 countries joined the campaign and implemented it in their various countries. This is a significant improvement to the 2022 edition in which 22 Wikimedia Affiliates in 16 countries participated. Members of the International Team are Olaniyan Olushola, Deborah Jacobs, Dansu Peter, Saifullahi Abusufyan, Anthere (Advisor), and Alex Stinson (Advisor), Olatunde Isaac (Advisor), Euphemia Uwandu, Saifullahi Abusufyan, Alhassan Mohammed Awal, Chinwendu P. Anyanwu, Bright Kwame Ayisi and Nethi SaiKiran.

The planning for the campaign began in April 2022 and the following pre-campaign activities were strategically carried out.

  1. Design of the central coordination page - The central coordination page for the project's development was designed at least one month before the campaign. This was done to facilitate the seamless registration and tracking of Wikimedia affiliate communities participating in the campaign, as well as individual participants. Additionally, the page serves as a platform for addressing any pre-campaign questions from participants. This is also created in advance to share campaign resources such as tools, participating instruction and guidelines to prospective participants and local organizers.
  2. Campaign timeline design - he campaigns timeline was designed a minimum of two months prior to the campaign. It was shared with local organizers in advance of the campaign and was subsequently published on the central coordination page on Meta-Wiki.
  3. Recruitment of local organizers - We invited Wikimedia affiliates from across the Wikimedia movements to participate in the campaign. Responses from these affiliates were tracked, and a follow-up strategy was devised to encourage their participation and implementation of the campaign within their respective communities. Local organizers were urged to confirm their participation by listing their affiliates on the central coordination page. To support their efforts, best practices documentation was shared, and comprehensive responses were provided to address any questions they had.
  4. Local organizers guide design - We did not design new organizers guide this year, as the existing guide was deemed comprehensive and valuable for participants. The feedback received on the guide was positive, and there was no perceived necessity for a new version. The intention is to revisit and update the guide in 2024, incorporating any new and pertinent information or tools that may enhance the effective implementation of the campaign.
  5. Workflow chart and checklist design - We created a flowchart and designed checklist to track the progress of our planning and implementation of the campaign.
  6. Communication material design – We designed communication and promotion materials that we share on social media platforms to promote the campaign, and these materials were shared with local organizations to adopt. Some of them were published so that they could easily adopt them.
  7. Tracking tool set up – The tracking tool, the Hashtag tool was configured for all participating communities and monitored during the campaign and debug any time it experiences any bug.
  8. Design of the best practices for organizing the campaign – In 2021, we had designed a best practice for organizing the campaign and this was shared with all participating communities.
  9. Design of guide on how to use the tracking tool – We designed a guide on how to use the hashtag tracking tool and published the guide on the project coordination page for local organizers and individual participants.
  10. Monitoring – The progress of the campaign was monitored, and supports were provided for organizers who had challenges participating in the campaign and individuals participating in the campaign. There were a few participants who broke Wiki markup syntax but this was prom
  11. After the campaign – A jury team was set up to review and judge the participants contributions. The top contributors were published, and the top 10 participants and the winners were published.
  12. Prizes – Prizes were awarded to the top contributors.

The following strategies and approach were effective.

  1. Limiting participation to only experinced editors as recommmended by our evaluation in 2021

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Yes, the following were innovative:

  1. Limiting participation to editors with 1,000 edits and at least 1 year of editing experience on the English Wikipedia
  2. Reducing the size of the jury team. The large jury team has never been too productive, as it takes too much time to form a quorum, which impacts our timeline.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

We invited Wikimedia affiliates from across the Wikimedia movements to participate in the campaign. Responses from these affiliates were tracked, and a follow-up strategy was devised to encourage their participation and implementation of the campaign within their respective communities. We employed several strategies to bring local organizers, and participants who improved the quality of Wikipedia articles by adding photos. Some of the efforts include:

  1. Engagement through social media: Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook were effectively used to reach a wider audience.
  2. Collaboration with Photography Communities: Photographers who have contributed their images as part of Wikimedia photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth etc were encouraged to add the images contributed to Wikipedia articles where they are lacking.
  3. Provision of resources and tools: Tutorials on how to add images to Wikipedia article, and tools were provided for participants of the campaign.
  4. In-person Events and Edit-a-thons: Hosting in-person events, such as edit-a-thons or workshops, was effective in bringing in new contributors. These events provide hands-on guidance, foster a sense of community, and allow participants to see the impact of their contributions to the campaign.
  5. Recognition and Incentives: Top contributors are awarded prizes, and this gives them a sense that their contributions are appreciated. This can create a positive feedback loop and encourage sustained involvement.
  6. Multilingual model or approach: Recognizing the multilingual nature of Wikipedia, we promoted the campaign in multiple languages. This helps in reaching a diverse and global audience.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

No. The campaign went smoothly.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Our previous evaluation report revealed that the WPWP Campaign might not be a good model to recruit new editors. The report shows that participants who registered an account between 0 - 6 months (<p 0.05) are unlikely to comply with the campaign rules and are more likely to violate local editing policies. A significant proportion of participants in this experimental group did not meet the minimum expected competence to participate in the campaign. Participants in this experimental group may not be allowed to participate in the campaign to minimize disruption. The report of this evaluation was implemented and was impactful for the campaign as there were little or no disruption from participants since majority of the participants are experienced

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

One of the most inspiring moments in organizing the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign was witnessing the diverse and passionate community of contributors coming together to organize and participate in the campaign. It’s inspiring to seeing that this African-led initiative is adding value to the global community. We had a few challenges. Encouraging contributions from underrepresented communities and addressing the technical barriers some faced required thoughtful strategies. We worked hard to create a welcoming and supportive environment, providing resources, tools and guidance to help participants navigate the intricacies of Wikimedia Commons.

  2. Follow-up strategy: A follow-up strategy is in place to ensure that no participating community is left behind. We actively follow up with them to monitor the progress of the campaign within their respective communities.
