Proposal

edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Wikimedia Indonesia is an Indonesian non-profit organization dedicated to building a growing ecosystem of free knowledge in Indonesian and other local languages in Indonesia.

We organize a number of activities to support them, such as conducting Wikipedia training, promoting Wikimedia projects to the public and various groups in Indonesia, partnering with organizations that share the same vision and mission as the Wikimedia movement, and empowering Wikimedia and other communities that enable the development of the Wikimedia ecosystem.

This year, we ran many impactful activities and different activities designed to expose the public to the Wikimedia movement. We group these activities into three categories: outreach, research, and capacity building. The activities are expected to be ongoing throughout the year and will be assessed for their impact on the public in order to evaluate the sustainability of the activities in the future.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Over the past few years, we have found that the public is increasingly becoming more aware of the Wikimedia movement and interested in doing activities with Wikimedia Indonesia and the community. This leads us to believe that the presence of Wikimedia movements and organization in Indonesia could significantly contribute to the public in terms of capacity building and knowledge dissemination. This is indicated by organizations that wish to work together and initiatives from several institutions to participate in activities conducted by the Wikimedia movement.

Therefore, we continue to improve from within the organization and improve the quality of human resources to improve their programs and develop ideas to attract the public. We have arranged several activities that we will aim to address some issues:

  • Increase outreach activities to institutions to introduce some essential Wikimedia projects and GLAM.
  • Provide space and support for the community to evolve.
  • Examine the public's view of the Wikimedia movement and how the movement can help the broader community in building an open ecosystem.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This year, we categorize the activities into three strategic groups:

  • Engagement. This strategy is intended to attract more cooperation with institutions and organizations to participate in knowledge dissemination initiatives. It is implemented in work visits to several institutions and joint events within Wikimedia projects with relevant institutions.
  • Research. This is a new strategy manifested from WMID's new strategic plan. It is intended to learn more about the audience and how the Wikimedia movement means to them. It also seeks to understand the wishes and needs of the Wikimedia movement to provide appropriate direction.
  • Capacity building. This strategy is a cluster of activities executed by several teams to develop the capacity of the public and Wikimedia communities in Indonesia. Among the activities carried out in this area are Wikimedia project training, grant support, competitions, and capacity building for in-house organizations.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Here are the activities that will take place throughout the year, from mid-2023 to mid-2024:

  • Engagement
    • Collaborate with institutions/organizations.
    • Conduct community visits.
    • Conducted several outreach visits to multiple cities.

    • Conduct research on social media and high-impact content creation strategies.
    • Conduct research on the needs of the Wikimedia community in Indonesia and other communities.
    • Develop a strategy based on research into the needs of the Wikimedia community in Indonesia and other communities.

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

We have pursued several approaches to engage non-Wikimedia organizations to participate in our activities. For example:

  • Collaborate with institutions by understanding their needs instead of imposing ours.
  • Conduct research to discover the needs of the public and our Wikimedia community.
  • Develop a strategic plan incorporating feedback from partners we have been collaborating with, Wikimedia Indonesia members, and Wikimedia communities in Indonesia.

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

From the internal side of the organization, we have personnel who have good experience and are determined to run the programs for the past five years. We provide support and skills training for incoming staff members. Our organization always improves standard operating procedures, which are important in organizing activities and budget realization.

From external factors, Wikimedia Indonesia has predicted several items that might affect the course of activities. We place priority on travel to cities where we consider there is certainty in delivering activities. This is to minimize the use of unnecessary budget. We also strive to maintain strong relationships with our valued partners to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
