General information edit

This form is for organizations, groups, or individuals receiving multi-year Wikimedia Community Funds to report on their yearly results.

  • Name of Organization: Wikimedia Česká republika
  • Title of Proposal: Wikimedia Czech Republic Annual Plan 2022-2023

Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

In 2023, we organised or supported the implementation of the highest number of 330 activities to date. The total number of non-unique participants is 3,982, including at least 1,518 women, 1,792 newcomers and 2,120 editors (including at least 697 new registrants). Our events involved (again, non-unique) 239 partners - mainly GLAM institutions, schools or NGOs (51 of whom were new) and 213 community organizers.

At our events, 4127 articles were edited (1557 of them newly created), 11702 files were uploaded to Commons, and 408943 wikidata items were created or linked.

1. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS - In total, we implemented or supported 192 educational activities with 2046 participants, of which 1290 were newcomers; 909 women, and 1145 editors.

2395 articles edited (425 newly created), 1616 files uploaded to Commons, and 475 wikidata entries created/linked. We worked with 72 non-unique partners and 111 community organizers. Each event resulted in a news/blog article/video and social media post.

1.1. Seniors Write Wikipedia program

Types of senior events 2023:

  • Courses - During the year, we ran 14 senior courses. Of these, 10 were beginner courses, 3 advanced courses and 1 commons course. 6 courses were delivered online, 8 were delivered face-to-face - and in 6 regions (out of 14). 83 participants completed the courses. 83.13% (69/83) of the beginner course participants completed the course.
  • Alumni meetings and focus groups
  • Promotional events (Elpida, Fresh Senior Festival)
  • Lectures and workshops
  • Evening WikiSchools - 9 monthly online thematic meetings with topics that deepen editorial skills - a very popular form of continuing education
  • Senior WikiTown - a weekend retreat that crowns a year's work with seniors - this year it was held in Lysá nad Labem, attended by 15 seniors (see video)

Among the follow-up senior activities, the following activities took place regularly - on a weekly or monthly basis: the Prague Wikiclub in Život 90/Elpida, the Pilsen Wikiclub, the Olomouc Wikiclub, the Wikiclub in České Budějovice, the Wikiclub Brno - 3 of them thanks to active volunteers and the support of community mini-grants.

A total of 3 courses were run by local libraries - a result of our training librarians in running their local courses. Collaboration with libraries took place on multiple levels in 2023. Collaborations with the National Library, the Municipal Library in Prague or the library in Pardubice continued (training, lectures, workshops). However, collaborations also developed, especially through wiki-resident groups (NCs) or the Wikipedia media education project in collaboration with OSF and MKP. In this way, we were involved in the Media Olympiad in Ostrava, the Libraries of Today conference (Olomouc, 13 September) or training for librarians and individual cooperation (supported by a grant from OSF - 2023 Vodňany, 2024 Luhačovice).

1.2. Programs for schools

Educational activities took place in 5 secondary schools where we have been cooperating for a long time. We also had training courses at 5 universities - usually in connection with the topics of our challenges or competitions (Women on Wikipedia, Asian Month) or in filling content gaps (chemistry, media literacy). We also focused on strengthening promotion - in cooperation with Amos interactive boards in schools (more than 300 Czech primary schools) we presented the campaign There's an error.

1.3. Open educational program

The program included: – Regular WikiClubs in 6 regions (out of 14) – Regular Wiki meetings in 4 regional cities, plus 5 other larger community meetings - including a CEE Young Wikimedians meeting, a meeting with Czech Wikipedia memorabilia (with the participation of the founders), 100. Prague WikiMeeting and Czech-German WikiMeeting – 50 online wiki consultations - a space where we can refer questions from the public about adding to Wikipedia - held weekly, plus it is possible to make an appointment for a consultation – thematic meetings - young Wikimedians, librarians, wiki-residents, Czech Patrol, newcomer's page meetings, methodological meetings on educational materials – Wikidata and WM Commons training

2. PROGRAMS FOR COMMUNITY – In total, we implemented or supported 108 community activities, with 1266 participants, of which 405 were newcomers; 295 women, and 734 editors.

1491 articles edited (1064 newly created), 8841 files uploaded to Commons, and 3176 wikidata entries created/linked. We worked with 22 partners and 47 non-unique community organizers. Each event resulted in a news/blog article/video and social media post.

2.1. Programs for photographers

As part of the overall review of photographer retention in the 2023 photo competition, 23 photographers participated in at least two competitions in the year. Number of participants by individual competitions: WLE Czechia 2023 - 97; Microcontest Photographing Bridges 2023 - 33; Czech Wiki Photo 2023 - 200; Microcontest Photographing Libraries - 72; Microcontest Architecture 2023 - 8. In total, 410 (non-unique) users participated. 18 (non-unique) users took part in the We Photograph Czechia and Photo of Czech Villages competitions. In total, the photo programs included:

  • Another year of the We Photograph Czechia photo challenge - a total of 15 photographers participated in WPC, and 9080 files were uploaded in the Mediagrant (WPC + PCV). This year's edition was newly revived with 5 micro-competitions: Microcontest architecture, WLE Czechia 2023 (micro/monthly + international). Micro-competition bridges. Competition Photographing libraries. The free themes were chosen according to the wishes of the community.
  • WLE Czechia 2023 - 97 participants (of which 72 were newcomers); 28 of the participants were women. 348 files were uploaded, 8 of them illustrating WD entries.

8 photos were used in 12 Wikipedia articles. This was the first time we participated in this contest in 2023 - the Czech version of the Commons page, the banner location, and the entire setup for the Czech Republic were created.

  • The 5th edition of the Czech Wiki Photo 2023 contest - with a record participation of 200 photographers and 536 uploaded photos (limit is 3 photos per photographer)
  • CWP 2022 exhibition held in January: traditionally we combined it with our biggest public event, a public recorded discussion with GLAM partners and SLAM poetry exhibition with the theme of Wikipedia and education. We moved to the Didaktikon space of the Hybernská Campus, among other things, because during the event we officially signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the largest Czech University - directly with the Rector Milena Králíčková.
2.2. Programs for editors

Also in 2023, we held 3 comprehensive editorial challenges, the topics of which we held for a long time. The total number of articles edited in the challenges is 561. In terms of popularity, Women's Month on Wikipedia was the strongest in terms of users, with 71 editors participating. It was followed by the Czechoslovakia challenge with 40 users participating.

Women's Month on Wikipedia: During Women's Month on Wikipedia, 260 articles were created and 357 edits were made. A total of 71 male and female Wikipedians participated in the Women's Month on Wikipedia challenge, many of them editing for the very first time. More than forty people showed up in person or online for the largest Women's Month event, the Women on Wikipedia editathon at the American Center. Among them were Women's Month ambassadors Lejla Abbasova, Alena Doláková, Eliška Soukupová, and Martina Bechyňová. It was with great pleasure that we welcomed distinguished guests from the British, American and Swedish embassies. With the number of many smaller events and editathons, the IWW ranks among the most important challenges. The challenge was accompanied by events carried out in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences (Women in Science), the Art History Department of the Faculty of Arts (Women in Art) and the Film Studies Department of the Faculty of Arts (Women in Film).

Human Rights Month: Human Rights Month expanded Wikipedia by 44 articles, with 62 edits saved by Wikipedians - the articles were fewer but more specialized (e.g. Hate speech, Homophobic bullying, Consent to sexual activity or Abortion in Poland) and deepened collaborations with other NGOs. As part of the challenge, we met in person three times this year. At the Wikipedia Human Rights Month Editathon at the Langhans Café and Centre of People in Need, at the Wikipedia Writing Workshop for Nonprofits, and at the Human Rights Day Editathon at the School of Informatics, Postal Administration and Finance in Brno. In total, 32 editors and editors came to our events in person, a significant number of them newcomers. 16 non-profit organizations working on human rights issues helped us to promote and implement the project. It included a Wikipedia writing workshop for NGOs.

Competition Czechoslovakia: 188 articles were created, 142 were edited. A total of 11 photographers participated in the photographic part and uploaded 166 files. The main editathon was held on Thursday 27 November at the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové. The main editathon was complemented by some smaller ones. In Olomouc, with four participants, the event was held as part of the Olomouc Wikiclub, and in Prague as part of the Prague Wikiclub, but the editathon was also held online. The editathon also included a lecture by Doc. Mgr. Jiří Huteček, Ph.D., who prepared a lecture on "Czechoslovak veterans of the First World War 1918-1938 as a historical phenomenon" (recording). In addition to the editing in Olomouc, there were also two seminars "Wikipedia as a key to understanding history", which were led by the main lecturer Pavel Bednařík for students of the Gymnasium Hejčín on 5 and 7 December. The Thomas Mann Gymnasium in Czechoslovakia joined in with their students, visiting the premises of the Military History Institute, where they were guided by the CS Challenge Ambassador, Michal Louč, and learned how to create historical articles on Wikipedia and how to critically verify the information obtained. The challenge also included a Wikidaton at the Historical Institute of the CAS, where we uploaded the Everyday History Database together with staff and Wikidatists from the community. The prizes for the challenge were donated by Academia Publishing and the publishers of the Institute of History of the CAS. In addition, everyone involved received one pair of themed socks and a free two-month membership to the Gentlemen of the Sock Club.

In total, we conducted 14 thematic editathons, with a total number of 188 participants, which is an average of 13.4 participants per event. The highest number of participants per event was 29 (with the organizers and team totalling 44 during the event). Within each of the 3 thematic challenges, we are developing one main editathon, which is a low-threshold event designed to open the door to editing to the general public. We organize these events in collaboration with at least one other partner (usually several) and other editathons are prepared for specific participants - e.g. members of the Academy of Sciences or other public institutions. Some of these events, which were organized locally by community members, were also supported by the community mini-grant fund - editathons at Czech Radio Brno and Olomouc, the Let's add PVH to Wikipedia challenge.

2.3. Community minigrants

After a few lukewarm years when there was less interest in community mini-grants, the situation has turned around and the resources of the Community Mini-Grants Fund have been fully utilised in 2023. We attribute this mainly to targeted outreach to active members from the community whom we supported administratively and individually in project development, the time factor, and targeted relationship building with the community and engaging them in our activities. 14 community mini-grants were supported - including regular WikiClubs in Prague, Brno, and České Budějovice; two competitions - the traditional Describe a Monument and Asian Month on Wikipedia; several editathons and a weekend photo workshop; and several community meetings. All events were organised by experienced members of the association or lecturers and were publicly requested and supported by community voices. Thus, they fulfil exactly the function with which we founded the program years ago.

3. PROGRAMS FOR PARTNERSHIPS – In total, we implemented or supported 18 activities with 427 participants, of which 96 were newcomers; 216 women, 124 editors.

240 articles edited (68 newly created), 1167 files uploaded to Commons, and 405262 wikidata entries created/linked. We worked with 140 non-unique partners and 26 community organizers. Each event resulted in a news/blog article/video and social media post.

3.1. GLAM program

As part of GLAM program this year we focused on developing long-term partnerships, establishing new ones and creating wiki-residencies. The number of wiki-residents increased from 5 to 7 in 2023. We maintained 3 strategic partnerships (Charles University Prague, National Library, East Bohemian Museum Hradec Králové), all of which were supported by a Memorandum of Cooperation/Comprehensive Partnership Agreement. These partnerships enable us to hire partner's facilities, co-organise educational and community events and (in the case of Charles University upload more than 700 images to Wikimedia Commons). Other partnerships include the Municipal Library Prague, the Research Library Olomouc, the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences, ZOO Prague and the State Regional Archive. In 2023 we established a permanent basis for meetings of wiki-residents – kick-off lunch and regular networking meetings took place in October and December 2023. Participants include both organizers and residents involved in GLAM collaborations, as well as workshop lecturers and course participants. This year we held 7 wikidata workshops, 2 workshops for institutions (National Library, Historical Institute, Academy of Science) and 2 events for international GLAM coordinators organized together with our partners (Open Collections & National Library). Within the program area, the metrics of Editors and Organizers usually overlap. Our editors are often residents of GLAM institutions, who are in charge of not only Wiki-residencies and Content Partnerships but also the coordination of cooperation with the institution itself. Partnership with Charles University resulted in uploading 702 images on Wikimedia Commons using Wikidata and Cassandra tools. Another partnership with the National Library established the basis for uploading wikidata packages of the National bibliography.

3.2. Wikidata/Tech program

Thanks to our small but active wikidata community and long-established partnerships - especially with the National Library of the Czech Republic, but also with the deepening collaboration with the Academy of Sciences, with the support of the wiki-residents, 6 workshops have been realized, which not only educate and expand the wikidata community but also contribute to the Wikidata project. Activities implemented: – Czech National Bibliography Workshop, – Workshop - lexemes, – Workshop at the Historical Institute of the CAS (4 April 2023, 18 April 2023), – The hackathon focused on the NL bibliographic database, – Virtual Wikidata workshop - SPARQL for beginners, – Workshop Let's describe library photographs, – Wikidataton CS - Database of everyday history at HIU CAS.

3.3. Advocacy

Our more targeted advocacy activities began with the creation of the Advocacy Coordinator position in October 2022. We began to map the need for advocacy of free culture principles in the Czech environment, building international cooperation with the Wikimedia community and gradually building contacts with Czech free culture advocates and, for example, legislators. These efforts culminated in the General Assembly of the newly incorporated Wikimedia Europe, which represents the advocacy efforts of the movement in Europe. The first meeting of Wikimedia Europe members took place in Prague, whereby Wikimedia Europe's statutes - the Annual General Assembly will be held. We were able to combine this historic first meeting with the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation with the National Library, which capped our long-standing (especially Wikidata) collaboration. Deputy Prime Minister for Digitalisation Ondřej Profant, Deputy Minister of Culture Ondřej Chrást, Member and Quaestor of the European Parliament Marcel Kolaja and other respected guests spoke at the meeting. We also implemented 4. Open Collections research, where we are reaching out to 400 Czech GLAM institutions - a total of 73 respondents from the 2023 questionnaire answered that they are aware of GLAM and interested in more information, of which 8 institutions are seriously interested in cooperation.

ASSOCIATION EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES – In total, we implemented or supported 12 activities with 243 participants, of which were at least 98 women, 117 editors and 29 community organizers. In addition to the above, we have also organised over 12 "Association Events" - these include the community Wikiconferences, the November CEE Youth Meeting organised on behalf of our organisation in Prague, community galas for the annual action plans or PR&fundraising, community research presentations and presentations at international Wikimedia conferences. "Association events" - this includes e.g. the Community Wikiconference, the November CEE Youth meeting held on behalf of our organization in Prague, community galas for annual activity plans or PR&fundraising, community research presentations and presentations at international Wikimedia conferences.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

In general, the best strategy that continues to prove successful is the choice of 3 main themes - women (Q1), human rights (Q2) and Czechoslovakia (Q4) - as thematic quarterly challenges. This is where the joint efforts of all programmes are directed and where they combine their activities - thematic educational workshops, community competitions and events and partner engagement. This allows for long-term planning (often a year in advance with partners), it's understandable to the public, and we cover content gaps. (e.g., Student editathons focused on women in the field, or students learning to take photos on the Commons at a workshop and submitting photos to a CWP competition; or the Military History Museum hosting not only a tour for students at a collaborating high school, but also a follow-up editathon as part of the Czechoslovakia challenge).
1. EDUCATIONAL:

– Setting up activities for target groups is what has long proved to be key in keeping newcomers interested - for seniors this means offering an advanced course after the beginner's course - we also offer a Commons course. However, the past year has confirmed that there is a lot of interest in the newly added activity of an evening online WikiSchool - once a month, tutors prepare a development topic (infoboxes, templates, biographies, wikidata, etc.). WikiSchool has become a successful format (9 WikiSchools attended by 113 non-unique participants - i.e. the average is 12.5; the maximum was 18). Renewal of physical WikiClubs and expansion to 3 more cities. The highlight of the year is the Senior WikiCity. In addition, we're looking for more work for the one-time active members - some have become lecturers, and others are helping us in the Alumni Club or with PR videos. – Librarians - long-term relationship building - especially through professional conferences and "library" topics - the establishment of the Media Literacy Portal on the Czech Wikipedia has opened doors to library students and to several national library activities, and helped us integrate our education into the library. – After 3 years, the launch of Community Mini Grants - through tireless efforts, explanation, creating examples of good practice and finally individual outreach to appropriate community members, we have reached 100% utilization of the grants and a portfolio that matches the design of the fund - local events led by community members for other community members. – Completion of the practical-methodical brochure Teach (with) Wiki.

2. COMMUNITY:
  • Implementing the philosophy of ownership on projects to our active members, who become ambassadors and provide them with tools and support.
  • Involving members to become independent organizers of their activities and mentoring their growth.
  • Verified form of competitions (thematic and time-limited), spread evenly over the year.
  • Diverse portfolio of topics and types of activities (online and offline) enabling to attract different target groups.
  • Micro competitions revived the long-standing We Photograph Czechia.
3. PARTNERSHIPS:
  • Long-term partnerships culminating in 3 memoranda of cooperation (Charles University, National Library, Museum of East Bohemia - this in October 2022) - opening the way to broad-spectrum cooperation - not only sharing content but also thematic activities in the partner's space and capacity and wiki-resident position.
  • Establishment of a wiki-resident working group - the number of active wiki-residents allows us to support their activity with targeted coworking - regular support and sharing of experience - thanks to the position of the main wiki-resident and now also the flying wiki-resident - an experienced GLAM volunteer.
  • The technical community plans its bi-monthly meetings as thematic workshops, where they directly engage in data completion - most often directly with a partner - which has led to greater engagement of the technical community in partnership with cultural institutions.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

1. EDU:
  • Micro Educational formats - follow up workshops/sessions - first with the seniors as target group - topics as: creating infoboxes at WP, uploading unowned files to Commons etc.
  • Online “wiki-advice” - we newly run a regular online “wiki-advice”every week and we promote this as a complementary support measure to all our other educational activities.
  • Media literacy portal at CZ Wikipedia - as a useful tool for schools and libraries in the Czech environment.
2. COMMUNITY:
  • Firm structure of larger projects to be divided evenly over the year (Q1 - Women on Wikipedia, Q2 - Human Rights on Wikipedia, Q3 - Czech Wiki Photo, Q4 - Czechoslovakia contest).
  • When developing a larger campaign continue to use tested solutions (hashtag tool for the competition) - and our newly developed tool Wikinside, that will help us with long-term impact/metrics measuring.
  • A hybrid form of events or preparing the offer of smaller, local initiatives- online linking of editathons with WikiClubs - a sense of connection across the country
  • New, more functional and user-friendly layout of the project website, which was implemented between other chapter programs.
  • Capacity to organise a long-planned local photographic mini-competition.
  • Conducting in-house research on the Czech community, which helped us to better describe and understand it - and also to better communicate the strategies we use to develop the Czech community as a whole - in its parts.
3. PARTNERSHIPS:
  • Close links with the technical community - planning strategic partnerships with them - creating wiki-resident position and wiki-resident group - establishing a lead wiki-resident position that can teach and pass on experiences to other residents.
  • Creating the Advocacy position.
  • Linking partnerships with educational and community activities - Students Write Wikipedia with internships for professional students at our partner museum. In partnership with the CityLibrary Artotheque - Art History students.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

PARTICIPATION - quarterly Open Wikimedia calls and many other thematic calls with different groups of the Czech community - depending on the topic.

EDU:

  • trainers - regular meetings and sharing of experiences, reaching out to new trainers, peer-to-peer learning
  • Alumni Club - active participants in senior courses
  • librarians - regional mini-projects - organisation of regional training - especially for seniors
  • educators - regional turnkey projects (usually for students or other educators) - co-organisation
  • experienced community
  • WikiAdvice - volunteer involvement

COMMUNITY:

  • event/competition organisers
  • wiki-ambassadors of thematic challenges
  • volunteers - at events organised for the public
  • partners (from institutions)
  • evaluators/jury - for photo or editorial activities - peer-to-peer evaluation

PARTNERSHIPS:

  • wiki-residents (paid position) - from among volunteers or partners - as a key person to work with the partner institution
  • volunteers - to work with the institution

In general, advisory groups for each program - from among members/volunteers/partners. Each board member has a specific area of responsibility that he/she oversees.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. Agree

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

– Senior’s group - program specifically targeted to them is communicated through partners and channels that are accessible to them and activities tailored to their needs

– Women group - women are also an under-represented group from the perspective of the WM community - all of Q1 is focused on this group through various activities and PR on WikiGap and women on Wikipedia. We also brought the topic to the Community Wikiconference - where a queer editor spoke and where it could be discussed with community members – LGBTQ+ group and theme - we are continuing with the annual theme - this year as part of the Q2 activities focused on the broad area of human rights - we also ran an LGBTQ+ editathon with partners – Media literacy portal as a tool to shape the stakeholder's discussion on the topic of media education and literacy for different target groups - the launch of the portal brought us closer to some of the teachers, and libraries and as well to cooperation with the Open Society fund. The public discourse about how media literacy and fact-checking should be approached and thought was not established.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

– Measuring and communication of the success/impact (non-editing activities): in communication with our community a better description of what the intention/objective for a particular action is a beneficial step: e.g. not the number of edits or news articles, but the “first positive experience” with WP in general

– current community engagement: regular meetings with supporting groups consisting of members of the community (4x per year), systematic communication through various channels, and feedback forms and creating an environment for self-fulfilment of active members to run their activities,

  • the need in the long term to create a friendly and supportive environment for engagement (FSP),

– active community and resistance against burnout: listening to community needs, creating space for discussion during meetings, following discussion pages and proactive approach, – photographers community need-suited program: new initiatives were run to understand the best ways to involve photographers (new websites, templates, activities), – streamline the GLAM project: better communication of the benefits of collaboration to institutions - we changed the metrics system and rewrote the project page to make it understandable for institutions & hired a professional attorney to serve as Advocacy Coordinator, – obtaining a grant to develop our own metrics tool: streamline coordination across programs and communication externally through ongoing statistics and metrics.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

EDU: the fact that activities are funded/covered for schools doesn’t necessarily result in higher interest for those activities or successful delivery.

COMMUNITY: – The renaming of the WikiGap challenge to Women's Month on Wikipedia has helped with better acceptance by the community - the "confrontational tone" is disappearing. Similarly, having to communicate the Human Rights Month challenge as "Human Rights on Wikipedia" has helped to sharpen the edges of "activist-perceived" activity. – Changing profile of Human Rights Month, which primarily targeted expert organizations and professionals, who created specific content. It also allowed us to grasp a different perspective on particular subjects, such as Roma rights. We faced the need to remain anonymous by some of the editors, which challenged us to undertake new ways of communications PARTNERSHIPS: A surprise was the great interest of the community in the technical Wikidata workshops. Not only the wiki community was interested, but also partner institutions - as a result, we will now be organizing a large Wikidata workshop for a partner institution. Another unexpected thing was the inability of institutions to fund the position of wiki-resident. We set up a system of institutional coordinators - a staff member from the institution is the coordinator of the collaboration, and the main wiki-resident takes care of the transfer of information and media to Wikimedia projects.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Continue to strengthen relations with the community:
1. with partners, we are looking for ways that active community members will appreciate - we have piloted free National Library membership for active editors, and we'll continue to deepen existing partnerships to deliver outputs that the community will appreciate,
2. events with partners, e.g. excursions to closed spaces of the institution,
3. involving the community in the selection of topics for smaller events - editathons and competitions - we are preparing a Czech Wishlist,
4. creating a clear overview of international competitions and we want to promote them so that people get involved,
5. with Wikimania in Poland coming up - we have motivated community members to participate - the financial situation will not allow us to support them, but we are looking for ways to do so,
6. we are developing a Strategic Plan for the next 3 years - we have a plan for community engagement, including facilitation; as well as working on strengthening the Friendly Space area,
7. we want to develop a reward system for long-standing community members - we do this with competitions and using Barnstars for example, but we want to strengthen this area,
8. encouraging community members interested in Wikidata to work with us and educate them - we lack lecturer capacity,
9. creating a community coordinator position - one who would think primarily about community relations.

Part 3: Metrics for Year 2 edit

13a. Open and additional metrics data

Open Metrics
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Participants of the senior courses During the year we organize 6-week courses Seniors write Wikipedia all over the Czech Republic. The total number depends on several factors, but is usually around 12. We aim to run courses of such quality and with long term support for participants that the participants complete the full length of the course. The goal is that 70% of SePW participants successfully complete the course 70% 83,13% 83.13% of the beginner course participants completed it - by exact numbers, it has been 69 of 83 participants. We always face a much higher number of participants who originally signed up for courses (especially when we run banner campaigns). Still, the 83 are those who started in the course.

In 2023, we ran 14 Seniors Write Wikipedia courses. There were 10 beginner courses, 3 advanced courses and 1 Commons course. Six courses were online, eight were face-to-face. A total of 10 instructors taught these 14 courses. It is still a fact that several of these instructors are seniors themselves.

Lecturers are responsible for keeping the track of attendance of participants throughout the course. After they complete the course, they add a written report with some basic statistical data to our internal chapter wiki, including the attendance. They also distribute the barnstars for the successful absolvents of the courses. The coordinator of the educational programmes then collects these data manually finalizes the count and adds the metrics to our general yearly overview.
# events for community As part of our community programmes, we organise several activities throughout the year focusing on joint events for the community - mainly editathons or joint workshops, focusing on a variety of topics. The aim is to organize at least 12 events (workshops/editatons) during the year - min. 1/2 of them hybrid 12 14 In 2023, we organized or supported a total of 108 different activities within the community programs alone. These included a diverse portfolio of editathons, photography activities, themed campaigns/challenges, meetings and events based on community grants. In the end, fewer hybrid events were held than planned. However, we still run a large number of activities in an online version that can be accessed from anywhere.

At the few carefully selected hybrid events, we try to focus on the quality of the experience for all participants - we are now using a 360-degree camera in meetings, we stream our events frequently when it makes sense, and we make sure that participants who join online have a host who is dedicated to their comfort and engagement during events such as editathons.

Out of that we highlight the 14 key actions:

1. Editathon Women in Film (3.3.) (part of Wikigap - Women on Wikipedia challenge)
2. Editathon Women at Wikipedia at US Embassy premises (9.3.) + online (part of Wikigap - Women on Wikipedia challenge, hybrid editathon)
3. Editathon Women in Science at Czech Academy of Sciences (31.3.) (part of Wikigap - Women on Wikipedia challenge)
4. Editathon Women in Arts at Prague Municipal Library premises (24.3.) (part of Wikigap - Women on Wikipedia challenge)
5. Prague Quadriennale - Women and minorities in scenography (no attendance - individual approach).
6. Editathon in Czech Radio Brno (100yrs celebration of existence of Czech Radio broadcasting)
7. Editathon in Czech Radio Olomouc (100yrs celebration of the existence of Czech Radio broadcasting)
8. Editathon Human Rights Month on Wikipedia at People in Need NGO premises + online (20.6.) (part of Human Rights Month on Wikipedia, hybrid editathon)
9. NGO workshop as part of Human Rights Month on Wikipedia challenge (22.6.)

10. Editathon China in context at premises of Sinopsis NGO together with Philosophical Faculty of Charles University (16.11.) (Asian Month at Wikipedia) 11. Editathon at the Department of Asian Studies at Palacký University in Olomouc (Asian Month on Wikipedia) 12. Workshop at Philosophical faculty of the University of Hradec Králové: Let’s add ASH to Wikipedia! (7.11.), (organised under community micro-grant support) 13. Editaton Československo (23.11.), (In Hradec Králové, Prague, Olomouc & online - a hybrid, part of Czechoslovakia challenge) 14. Community Wiki-Conference at Didaktikon Campus of Charles University in Prague (17.6.)

Comprehensive monthly challenges (*WikiGap, MHR, CS 48-89) Throughout the year, we focus on quarterly topics that have the potential to appeal to newcomers, while also focusing on topics that are not sufficiently covered thematically on the Czech Wikipedia. In Q1 we focus on "Women on Wikipedia" (Wikigap challenge), in Q2 we focus on "Human Rights on Wikipedia" (this includes minority rights topics - e.g. Roma minority, migrants, LGBTQ+ community, etc.) and in Q4 we focus on "Czechoslovakia 1948 - 1989". Each call presents a set of activities - editathons, workshops and competitions - that target the broader community and newcomers, and also engage new organizers and partners. 3 3 In 2023, we completed 3 comprehensive challenges. This means at least a 6-week public call for contributions - combined with a competition for existing and new editors, several editathons - ideally one low-threshold, public one, another often aimed at students or prepared with partners (NGOs, public institutions) and other activities - e.g. a thematic WikiSchool for seniors. These long-planned quarterly activities allow us to plan long in advance with partners, keep the tradition and improve the preparation and implementation.

Women's Month on Wikipedia (former Wikigap, March-April): During Women's Month on Wikipedia, 260 articles were created and 357 edits were made. A total of 71 male and female Wikipedians participated in the Women's Month on Wikipedia challenge, many of them editing for the very first time. More than forty people showed up in person or online for the largest Women's Month event, the Women on Wikipedia editathon at the American Center/USA Embassy. Among them were Women's Month ambassadors (influencers) Lejla Abbasova, Alena Doláková, Eliška Soukupová, and Martina Bechyňová. Who helped us to promote editathon to the highest PR numbers this year for free. We were very pleased to welcome distinguished guests from the British, American and Swedish embassies. Two blog posts accompanied the challenge communications. With several smaller events and editathons, the WMW is among the most complex ones. (zeny.wikimedia.cz)

Human Rights Month ot Wikipedia (June): Human Rights Month expanded the encyclopedia by 44 articles, with 62 edits saved by Wikipedians - although fewer, the articles were more specialized (e.g., Hate speech, Homophobic bullying, Consent to sexual activity, and Abortion in Poland) and deepened collaborations with other non-profit organizations. As part of the challenge, we met in person three times this year. At the Wikipedia Human Rights Month Editathon at the Langhans Café and Centre of People in Need, at the Wikipedia Writing Workshop for Nonprofits, and the Human Rights Day Editathon at the School of Informatics, Postal Administration and Finance in Brno. In total, 32 editors came to our events in person, a significant number of them have been newcomers. 16 non-profit organizations working on human rights issues helped us to promote and implement the project. Two blog posts have been published. (lidskaprava.wikimedia.cz)

In Olomouc, with four participants, the event was held as part of the Olomouc Wikiclub, in Prague as part of the Prague Wikiclub, but the editathon was also held online. The editathon also included a lecture by Doc. Mgr. Jiří Huteček, Ph.D., who prepared a lecture on "Czechoslovak veterans of the First World War 1918-1938 as a historical phenomenon". In addition to the editing in Olomouc, there were also two seminars "Wikipedia as a key to understanding history", which were led by the main lecturer Pavel Bednařík for students of the Gymnasium Hejčín on 5 and 7 December. The Thomas Mann Gymnasium Prague joined in with their students, visiting the premises of the Military History Institute, where they were guided by the CS Challenge Ambassador, Michal Louč, and learned how to create historical articles on Wikipedia and how to critically verify the information obtained. Two blog posts have been published. (ceskoslovensko.wikimedia.cz)

All of our challenges are financially supported by the U.S. Embassy in the Czech Republic under the Small Grants Program.

# micro-competitions We Photograph Czechia We want to support our long-term program for photographers - We Photograph Czechia by organizing thematic micro-competitions to increase interest in the program and attract newcomers. 3 5 We organized 4 micro-competitions and helped to launch additional micro-competitions organized by our member/librarian from the National Library. This type of activities has been implemented in such a systematic way for the first time.

Microcompetition Architecture - was the first one and we were learning how to attract participants to take part in it. Wiki Loves Earth Czechia 2023 (micro/monthly challenge + international nominations) - for the first time, we took part in WLE and turned it into a national-level of photo contest too. It was part of the strategic plan, to implement, launch and test one international photo contest. Micro competition Bridges - the topic had been voted by the community and had a great success with many very nice photos uploaded. Micro competition We Photograph Libraries - aiming to activate mainly librarians, readers and our community members to take a photo of their local library.

Measuring retention of photographers: aside from organising the micro-contests we were interested to learn a bit more about the slowly growing community of photographers. Here are some learnings: In 2023, increased the number of photo competitions from 2 to 5 - by that, we reached our maximum number - regarding the interest of photographers, jury capacity etc. 59 photographers took part at least in two competitions between 2020 and 2023. In 2023, 23 photographers participated in more than one photo competition while in 2022 it was only 6 photographers. In 2024 we want to focus on updating/preparation of video tutorials in more detail on the process of uploading and editing photographs.

# of collaborating vice-residents/ partnership coordinators We aim to bring our strategic GLAM partnerships to a form of long-term collaboration - which is best ensured by dedicating staff capacity on the part of the collaborating organisation - in the form of a collaborating vice-residents/ partnership coordinator. 6 7 7 wiki-residents, 3 strategic partnerships

As part of GLAM program this year we focused on developing long-term partnerships, establishing new ones and creating wiki-residencies. The number of wiki-residents increased from 5 to 7 in 2023. We maintained 3 strategic partnerships (Charles University Prague, National Library, East Bohemian Museum Hradec Králové), all of themwere supported by a Memorandum of Cooperation/Comprehensive Partnership Agreement.

13b. Additional core metrics data.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants Educational programs: We are able to count unique participants for some of the programs - such as Seniors edit Wikipedia, but it is harder to cover when these participants take part in other activities at the same time (which is the desired result on the other hand), such as editathons. Therefore as the main metric we focus here on Participants in general. We measure all participants of all education activities within a calendar year (including repetitive participants - e.g. senior takes part in basic course, then he/she attends a course on Commons). We are particularly interested in new/ returning participants in Seniors write Wikipedia program. There we observe this phenomenon. Nowadays we are able to make qualified estimations on the number of new/returning participants, but not serve with exact data. Who are the participant groups in Educational programs? Seniors - elderly people, with a slightly more female participants, this is still a very good result since one of the diversity groups we identify, besides women, is actually eldely male - they are tempted to participate in community activities, courses, and lifelong learning offer much less in general. librarians - interested in educational activity offer in their library, running courses for seniors, but also in Wikidata and other cooperations. University students - across different fields of study University teachers -across different fields of study high school and secondary school (VET) students - often non-editing activities high school and secondary school (VET) teachers - often non-editing activities general public - wide, hard-to-define, but in some percentage the general public is participating community members How/ in what they participate? courses - online/offline lectures - online/offline thematic workshops - online/offline thematic editatons - tailor-made activities, senior WikiTown Alumni club, trainers/lecturers meetings and Meet-ups, celebration (Christmas Potluck or New Year's Eve Potluck with seniors from our courses) in activities we co-organise, co-participate in with our own program track/lecture/workshop, such as (un)conferences, hackathons, etc. yearly goal:650 Programs for Community: We divide participants according to a way of contribution and their proficiency. In the community program the main target group consists of participants in regard to Wikipedia - newcomers and participants with whom we have a long term collaboration, all editing articles. For them we organize editathons and training, within a year we have 4 constant events, however we usually team up with other organizations and develop 2-3 more in collaboration with other agents. Second group of participants can be divided into community members and trainers. This group is shared with the EDU program, as this program is the most developed and has regular events. Thirdly WMCR runs programs for photographers (most of them are also Wikipedians and furthermore they engaged in WMCommons project). We run activities aiming for two projects: WMCommons and Wikidata. in this program we would like to learn more about WMCommons users and how to bring a larger number as participants, in line with what factors develop the existing projects. We are interested in people from different backgrounds, who would like to learn how to write/upload and edit content in a longer perspective. As participants we also perceive people working in partners organizations, who are actively engaged in our activities - through PR and communication, sharing resources or becoming editors. yearly goal:400 Programs for Partnerships: In the Programs for Partnerships, there are GLAM institutions with which we cooperate the most - in the terms of sharing their content - mostly data or media files (GLAM - 10 planned partners or Wikidata/Tech Program - 5 planned partners). In some institutions we cooperate with wiki-rezident - we plan 9 for the next year. That means 24 participants. Among other things, we are planning common activities with the most active partners - for next year we are planning at least 2 thematic editathons directly in the institutions, with a planned participation of at least 10 people. We also include partners who are not directly involved in sharing content, but work together to promote free culture or other PR of our programs. These are, for example, SIBMAS (Association of Theater Institutions), UHS (Association of Art Scientists, Art Historians and Art Lovers) and others. The last participant we consider is our partner Otevřené sbírky (Open Collection). It is a non-profit organization that annually measures the number of media files (digitized collection items) that museums and galleries in the Czech Republic have managed to publish to the public and share their results with us. yearly goal:37 1087 3739 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

We managed to overcome the set goal for the number of participants in the year 2023, which was 650, in fact massively. The sum of 2046 refers to all participants in educational activities within 2023, not necessarily unique participants. There is also a massive difference between participants and editors since most of educational outreach activities primarily aimed at positive experiences with Wikimedia and only secondary at editors' experience. There is a slight overlap of participants taking part in Educational programs and other WMCZ program activities - that goes mainly for participants from the Seniors Write Wikipedia program, who have been very actively taking part in editathons and thematic challenges (Programs for Community). The growth in 2023 is mainly due to a higher number of outreach activities and representation at conferences and events as guest speakers/trainers. That is how we target wider general and professional audiences and provide often with 1st-time positive experiences with the fascinating world of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in general. In 2023, where we can track it, we had a ratio of female to male participants almost equal to 2:1. In some activities it is even the majority of women. A more involved target group has been this year librarians and teachers mainly via shared thematic activities based on WikiPortal Media Literacy. In 2023, we organised 192 activities in EDU alone, some of them are just short lectures and inputs at our partners' events, but others are multi-phase courses of 6 lessons, etc. A total of 2046 participants took part in these events. Who are the participant groups in Educational programs? Seniors - elderly people, librarians - interested in educational activities offered in their library, but also in Wikidata and other cooperations (media literacy). University students - across different fields of study University teachers - across different fields of study high school and secondary school (VET) students - often non-editing activities high school and secondary school (VET) teachers - often non-editing activities general public - wide, hard-to-define, but in some percentage the general public is participating community members How/ in what do they participate? courses - online/offline lectures - online/offline thematic workshops - online/offline thematic editathons - tailor-made activities, senior WikiTown, Wikischools, Alumni club, trainers/lecturers meetings and Meet-ups, celebration (Christmas Potluck or New Year's Eve Potluck with seniors from our courses) in activities we co-organise, co-participate in with our program track/lecture/workshop, such as (un)conferences, hackathons, etc. yearly goal:650 reality: 2046

PROGRAM FOR COMMUNITY: We saw a two-thirds increase in Community Programs. The main drivers of this increase are: Community mini-grants and their promotion - in 2023, we have seen an increase in virtually all parameters - the number of applications, the number of community members involved and the number of participants and content generated by these activities. More events were organised, which we included in the statistics because we supported them not only financially, but also organizationally and through PR.

Beyond the thematic challenges and planned editathons, we also had several significant larger community events in 2023: Annual Community Wikiconference - a return event after the covid. 100th Prague Wiki Potluck - Wiki-meets up are in Prague and organised on a regular monthly basis, for the 100th edition many people from the community have been invited, not only Prague-based and not only regular visitors. A festive meeting of Czech Wikipedians and Founders and the launch of the new publication How Czech Wikipedia was born In total, we organised or supported 108 events: challenges, competitions, editathons or programmes, with 1266 participants. Last year, we focused on analysing our community of photographers - who they are, what their retention is, and what paths lead to them. More on is mentioned above in the open metrics for photo contests. Yearly goal:400 Reality: 1266

PROGRAMS FOR PARTNERSHIPS: The number of participants increased in 2023 mainly due to the increased number and depth of partnerships and events organized by or with our partners. Most of these activities were related to non-editing events based on established and new partnerships (memorandum with Charles University Prague, National Library and Museum of East-Bohemia). We don't have an exact number of new participants.

Higher number of events was a result of cooperative events with our GLAM partners, who can engage their community members to join thematic calls (editathons, wikidata workshops, hackathons). Yearly goal: 37 reality: 427

ASSOCIATION EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES: Formally, we could also include in the number of participants the so-called "Association events", where we record 243 additional participants - this includes e.g. the Community Wikiconference, the November CEE Youth meeting held on behalf of our organization in Prague, community galas for annual activity plans or PR&fundraising, community research presentations and presentations at international Wikimedia conferences. However, this number is not formally counted.

COMMUNITY: hashtag tool, fountain tool, registration from, Dashboard, attendance list (for community of editors), Commons Uploaders in cat, Tracker, categories in Wikimedia Commons (for community of photographers), Petscan (has been broken lately) PARTNERSHIPS: Dashboard, manual collecting of data, EditGroups, attendance list

Number of editors Educational programs: We are collecting information on how many editors we have throughout our activities (some editing, some semi-editing, and some non-editing based activities with EDU programs). We are as well collecting data on newly registered editors (mostly via Dashboard) - that gives us an opportunity to report on how educational programs contribute to editors community growth, newcomers constant flow, diversity of the editors community etc. Newly registered editors are typically little above ⅓ of editors involved in educational programs per year. yearly goal: 450 editors/ 220 newly registered editors Programs for Community: We reach a wide audience through editathons, editing contests and community lead events, which stands for participants editing on Wikipedia. In order to track activity, we mainly use Dashboard to learn about editathons participants. We also make use of tools for more experienced users such as Hashtag or Fountain, those are being involved in organization of editing competitions. We also use various (internal and external) communication channels with participants to follow up and learn if they continue editing as well as to measure the overall satisfaction of participating in our programs. We would like to gain more experience in ensuring further editions and returning editors to participate in regular activities. Tools such as Fountain are also being used in community-led activities, which rely on the same structure as our programs. We aim for learning people to become independent editors as well as also to encourage those, who already edit to be involved in chapter’s activities. yearly goal:200 editors / 50% of newly registered editors Programs for Partnerships: Within the program area, the metrics of Editors and Organizers usually overlap. Our editors are often residents of GLAM institutions, who are in charge of not only Wiki-residencies and Content Partnerships, but also the coordination of cooperation with the institution itself. For us, the new editors are representatives of institutions who have become coordinators of cooperation and for these reasons have also been trained in Wikipedia or Wikidata. But we also have GLAM editathons in cooperating institutions, and we expect a larger number of involved editors, both new and existing. Together, we count on 24 residents and coordinators within the Content Partnership and Wikidata Partnership and 10 participants in the specialized GLAM editathon, ie. with 34 editors. yearly goal: 34 684 2003 EDU:

The increase in the number of editors is related to the overall increase in the number of participants in training programs. This increase is already analysed above. The number 640 for newly registered editors is interesting. The largest contributor to this in 2023 was several courses at universities and high schools, where we captured by far the most new editors. Thus, more than half of all editors in WMCZ in 2023 were people involved with Educational Programs. yearly goal: 450 editors/ 220 newly registered editors reality: 1145 editors/ 640 newly registered editors

COMMUNITY: While we also managed to highly exceed the original target for the number of editors in the Programs for community – again related to the total number of participants involved – which is explained above in metrics participants, we did not manage to engage as many new editors. There are several explanations for this: Programs for Editors target and reach out to Wikipedia's regular contributors - especially through competitions. We try to bring in newcomers primarily through participation in editathons. A number of newcomers are new to the Community programmes, but were previously registered on Wikipedia - typically seniors and students previously involved through Educational Programmes. We saw a large increase in such participants in the community programs in 2023. With the increase in the number of Community micro-grants, the number of community members engaged in these activities also increased, and they are mostly registered already. Thus, although the metric of newly registered editors was not met in the community in this way, it was richly met in the Educational Programs and we still assess the numbers achieved as demonstrating success and continued growth in our activities. yearly goal: 200 editors / 50% of newly registered editors reality: 734 editors/ 46 newly registered editors

PARTNERSHIPS:

The metrics of Editors and Organizers usually overlap, as the partnership, community and educational programs have a common goal related to editor's engagement. The increased number of editors in 2023 Programs for Partnership comes mostly from wikidata community events, but also many members and employees of our partners. National Library bibliographic uploading editathon, workshop “Describe your library” or editathon „Women in Science“ contributed to the successful results within partnership cooperation. yearly goal: 34 reality: 124 editors in Programs for partnerships activities

Number of organizers Educational programs: Yearly we involve following stakeholders as organisers of educational activities. Their involvement is essential to our success. EDU team - 3 people Pool of lecturers/trainers - external cooperators of Wikimedia - approx. 15 active people from all around the country each year. Teachers (Students write Wikipedia) 10 Schools - 5 Librarians - 4 volunteers (Alumni from Senior program and volunteering lecturers) - 6 partners such as MAS (Local Action Group - cross-sectoral platform at local level) or teacher further education centres - 3 Wikipedians volunteering for Wikiclubs and Wiki-forum - usually there is overal with our lecturers team - 3 Instead of retention of organisers we are interested in the number of new organisers each year. We aim to gain 3 new organisers per year. Not yet an effective tool for measuring this besides observation of data collected. yearly goal: 49/ 3 new organisers Programs for Community: We work closely with the WMCZ Edu team regarding the trainers, who are mainly engaged in this program. For each editathon organized we cover the substantive part, thanks to support from main trainers and prospective co-trainers (usually 1-2 per event). The most developed event, WikiGap challenge, requires more support as we organize more than one editathon within the campaign. We are aspiring to have at least one active member of the community, who can be responsible for the activity and is able to take over the role of a main trainer. We strongly encourage active community members to become organizers of activities - over the year there are usually 3-4 independently organized events for a smaller group of Wikipedians. We make an effort to give a space and background for at least one editing contest organized by volunteers. Furthermore we work closely with partners, such as US Embassy or Veolia employees, who are willing to develop activities together with WMCZ and take responsibility as co-organizers. We would definitely welcome more mentors within our photographic projects, who could develop a program of events for the photographic community. WikiGap 5-7, LGBT/Climate/CS 48-89 2-3 trainers/event, NGO workshop 1 Popis pamatku 1, WikiExpedition 1, WikiTown 1, geographical editathon 1, partners 1-3 Programs for Partnerships: For us, the organizers are residents in institutions, coordinators of connecting databases with Wikidata and independent GLAM organizers. For example: for the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové (content partnership) Lukáš Nekolný - wiki-resident, Kristýna Staňková - museum employee and coordinator for Wikimedia partnership, for the Regional Museum Mikulov (content partnership) user: Mikurobu - editor and coordinator and employee of the museum, for the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences (Wikidata partnership) Markéta Marková - editor, coordinator and employee of the Institute of History, for ZOO Prague (content partnership) Petra Petáková ZOO employee and coordinator of two wiki-editors and employees of ZOO Prague, for State Regional Archive (content partnership) Vladěna Nývltová - coordinator and head of the volunteer group in the State Regional Archive, currently on maternity leave, for the Municipal Library in Prague (content partnership) Dita Lánská - head of the theater and film department in the Municipal Library and also the coordinator of Wikimedia partnership, for the database Czech artists Abart (Wikidata partnership) Jiří Hůla - coordinator for the institution, for the National Library in Prague (Wikidata partnership) Petra Šťastná - coordinator for the institution, for the National Film Archive (Wikidata partnership) Ladislav Čupr - coordinator end editor for the institution, for the Institute of Czech Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Wikidata Partnership) Vojtěch Jelínek - coordinator and editor for the institution. We expect the number to increase to about 18 by next year. yearly goal:18 90 213 EDU:

For the year 2023, we reached 111organisers, to count unique ones becomes a bigger challenge, since the numbers are generally growing and this particular count is done manually. We counted 41 individual unique organisers (=person), where many of them (co)organised multiple nr. of activities during the year. We have 8 new organisers; some are not newcomers to the community, but for the first time they took the role of organiser, others are outside the community/movement such as new librarians etc. yearly goal: 49/3 new organisers reality: 111/8 new organisers

COMMUNITY: The biggest increase among organisers is due to the increased number of applications for community micro-grants, some even repeatedly. For other community members, the community micro-grants were an opportunity to get involved in a new role. Among other things, we have seen several new Wikiclubs startups in smaller towns as a result, or be revived after a covid hiatus. We were able to engage community organisers across thematic challenges, as speakers, judges and otherwise. We perceive organisers as a vast group consisting of trainers, ambassadors, and partners (local and international). We also work on maintaining good relations with existing ones, such as the US embassy or Fotoskoda. We are happy to see that those trainers, with whom we were organising previous activities, are willing to join next editions of projects. We try to include profiles of trainers - for Women month at Wikipedia we invite female editors to run workshops as trainers, we also have a community interested in historical subjects. We also encouraged independent development of projects among members of our community and were able to ensure ambassadors for two community-led projects. yearly plan: WikiGap 5-7, LGBT/Climate/CS 48-89 2-3 trainers/event, NGO workshop 1 Popis pamatku 1, WikiExpedition 1, WikiTown 1, geographical editathon 1, partners 1-3 Reality: 47

PARTNERSHIPS: Increased number of organisers was caused by a stronger involvement of our community, and also higher number of events organised or co-organised with our partnership institutions. This number includes 7 permanent wiki-residents (Jaroslav Zastoupil, Lukáš Nekolný, Dora Rodriguez, Štěpánka Edlová, Petra Šťastná, Markéta Marková, Daniel Baránek) and some pending ones, who are becoming active and continuously working editors with their own personal strategy and are becoming a vital part of the community of Wikimedians. 19 events organised by wikidata and wikipedia editors as thriving members of the community helped also to increase number of attending audience (workshops, editathons, conference) and number of wikidata connections as well. Hackathon organised by the National Library was one of the most successful events, as the wikidata experts exported list of 225 595 items of the national bibliography. Important change in the community dynamics was created by establishing the role of main wiki-resident (Lukáš Nekolný) and hosting wiki-rezident (Jaroslav Zastoupil). They both managed to help others, especially the new wiki-residents to feel comfortable in their role. Regular meetings of the wiki-residents were organised from November 2023 and improved know-how and experience exchange throughout the community. New partnerships and wiki-resident positions were being discussed for 2024 National Heritage Institute. yearly goal:18 reality: 26

ASSOCIATION Here we include in particular the public event - Czech Wiki Photo 2022 opening with a discussion with GLAM partners and Wiki SLAM exhibition, the Community Wikiconference and the CEE Meeting. Výsledek: 29 organizátorů z komunity Result: 29 organizers from the community

Number of new content contributions per Wikimedia project
Wikimedia Project Description Target Results Comments Methodology
N/A N/A N/A 4126 EDU:

Traditionally, the figures/numbers in Educational Programs show that their impact is mainly in correcting and adding content to existing articles. New editors and seniors learn how to complete articles, correct errors, or engage in activities such as 1Llib1Ref to complete citations in courses and follow-up activities. Also, what we have been focusing on for a long time - the first positive experience with Wikipedia - is more important than the amount of content generated, for Educational Programs. If we separately embark on article preparation with students, it requires a multi-step activity - preparing and selecting articles, collaborating in teams, using the sandbox, consulting, and only then uploading the content to the main Wikipedia namespace. And then often communicate with the patrol actively. Otherwise, there is often resentment on the part of the school and educators, as well as the patrol and the reverters themselves. Despite this, we had fairly large numbers this year, mainly due to more integration of EDU and Programs for Community, with schools getting more involved in our themed challenges. Significant in this respect were, for example, the involvement of the University of Olomouc in Asian Month or the whole project with the school and the library in the town of Vodnany, where students mapped interesting and famous personalities in their region. Also, the course we are organising for the second year at the University of Hradec in cooperation with our partners the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové and the University. This course is led by our chief Wikimedian in Residency.

yearly goal: 1800 articles edited/ 180 articles created reality: 2395 articles edited/ 425 articles created

COMMUNITY: We managed to meet the goal and more importantly, the number of newly created articles has a very positive ratio toward all articles edited. That is the impact of core activities in Programs for Editors and in Community micro-grants, which both make a great deal in supporting existing and new editors to contribute to Wikipedia in the spheres of their interest and in the areas we dedicate our focus to (content gaps, challenges and contests which supports the fulfilment of Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2023). The 3 key challenges have been described above, including their impact. Community members are invited through the year to apply via a scheme of microgrants and run their editathons, thematic trips and visits, or localisation of international contests (such as Asian month, CEE spring, Wiki loves monuments etc.) We are now working on establishing a working group on content gaps and finding a functional model, for how to identify content gaps at Czech Wikipedia - continuously.

Additional activity on how to improve the content and quality of articles, that we implemented in 2023, is the international initiative Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP). It was our pilot to join this initiative and we plan to continue in the next year(s). WPWP now has its page in the Czech language. We worked on connecting the content created during our challenges (both editing and photo-oriented) and motivated our community to use the created content and connect it better. An additional benefit is that our content is more visible to users from other countries and vice-versa, they’ve enriched our Wiki with their links to photos. WPWP is a lot about contributing across the language versions.

yearly goal: 1400 articles edited reality: 1491 articles edited/ 1064 articles created

PARTNERSHIPS: Within Programs for partnerships we handle a high activity and efficiency of wikidata/tech community, therefore the results in wikidata connections and uploads have priority. Writing articles and uploading images is only a small part of editathons with our partners, and the results are mostly calculated as educational or community metrics.

yearly goal:300 articles edited/80 newly created articles reality: 240 articles edited/ 68 newly created articles

N/A N/A N/A 11624 EDU:

By default, we measure Commons via the Dashboard. We can rely on the Dashboard metrics on Commons only for newcomers, for the rest we need a template or another procedure for measuring this. It depends on whether there will be Commons courses or a Senior Wikitown and to what extent we will implement it. This can have a significant effect on metrics. Majority of the uploads in Education happen through Seniors Write Wikipedia program, 2nd to that have been several courses at high schools, where teachers used contests such as Wiki Loves Earth in their teaching, to motivate students to learn to upload pictures to Commons and to understand the medium and free licences.. We have focused lately not only on the upload and their quantities, but we worked with editors on the quality of the photos, final selection and most importantly on proper categorisation on Wikimedia Commons. In 2023 we organised one Online Wiki Commons course within Seniors Write Wikipedia and three Wikischools have been dedicated to uploading non-owned items on Commons, taking pictures for Commons and categorisation at Commons.

yearly goal:1300 reality: 1616

COMMUNITY: The most massive uploads in 2023 have been in 3 activities/challenges:

1. Newly implemented Wiki Loves Earth Czechia (it was one of the KPIs for the past year to implement one of the international contests).

WLE Czechia 2023 had 97 participants (of which 72 were newcomers); 28 of the participants were women. 348 files were uploaded, 8 of them illustrating WD items. Photographs used in articles on 12 wikis. We participated in this contest for the first time in 2023 - the Czech version of the Commons page, the banner location and the whole setup for the Czech Republic were created. The ten best photos were nominated for the international final of WLE 2023.

2. Czech Wiki Photo (CWP) contest which is already a tradition and steady success of more uploads, more photographers taking and part. It is our way to promote the Wikimedia Commons to the general public and get more hobby and also professional photographers involved in the Commons and contests. One of the winners of 2023 shared a powerful story, that she never won in any contest before and that she waited hours for her pictures of wild animals and birds and she was truly moved and emotional by the recognition she got.

We got 536 items uploaded in several categories of the award. CWP has an established jury panel where we have professional photographers and also community members involved.

3. Fotíme Česko (We Photograph Czechia) is a service programme running throughout the year and it is where we have the biggest uploads within Community Programs.

We faced a typo inside the Fluxx application - and most likely it was when setting up the goal for Commons items for Programs for Community. Therefore there is such a difference between the goal and the reported number. Yearly goal 1300 does not cope with the fact that one of our KPIs in Programs for Photographers is in We Photograph Czechia, and alone it is always way beyond 6000 items. yearly goal:1700 reality: 8841

PARTNERSHIPS:

Few things have happened in 2023 influencing Wikidata items growth, while it is not the main focus of Educational Programs, as has been explained in the application and also in last year's report. Dashboard became more stable and advanced in wikidata measurement if you set it up properly when launching a new course or activity there. We are in more frequent touch with Sage Rose trying to keep up to date when working with Dashboard. Our Programs become more interconnected via the backbone of campaigns in Programs for Community (Wikigap - Women's Month on Wikipedia, Human rights at Wikipedia month, etc.), and therefore more often we tackle the work on wikidata while working with individuals and course participants on other things. We launched the first Wikidata training session (“session for dummies”, on practical usage and understanding of the platform, rather then massive uploads we usually do within the Progams for partnerships & GLAM). We tested it as a format during the Wikischool.

  • Wikischool is one of our flagship products within Senior Writes Wikipedia - a monthly, online session of two hours focusing on advanced and specific skills and topics within Wikimedia projects we don’t tackle deep enough during the basic and advanced course. We launched Wikischool by the end of the year 2022. By the end of the year 2023, we had the first one focusing on Wikidata - and it will be adapted and used further with other target groups.

We focused on identifying individuals within the community, who could take the role of the future Wikidata trainer, and we have one, who is our lecturer and also a member of the Young Wikimedians CZ and CEE group. We now focus on providing him with assistance, opportunities and training to slowly grow into that role. This is new from November 2023 - a work in progress. yearly goal:100 reality: 475

COMMUNITY: In Programs for Community, we run Programs for Editors - mainly editathons and challenges/campaigns, we support the community via Community micro-grants and we also run Programs for Photographers. The main Wikidata items growth in Community Programs is happening via Fotíme Česko (We Photograph Czechia program), where the focus is on filling so-called blank spaces in Wikimedia projects, it is developed to keep the updates with the current situation in the Czech Republic (architecture, streets, etc.). For that work Wikidata, querying and making lists and maps is essential. Naturally, the program is rather on the decline than in growth, since Czechia is getting more and more covered, so does the nr. of Wikidata items added (this year it was 2485 for Fotíme Česko). The other bigger amounts are from other Activities with Photographers and also from a few of the editing challenges such as Asian Month. That is connected to how those contests are organised, how lists of articles are created and added, and finally how individuals get signed up/recognised and take part in such contests/challenges. yearly goal: 4500 reality: 3176

PARTNERSHIPS: Results in wikidata items connected or uploaded are caused by a higher number of cooperations with our active GLAM partners (National Library, Academy of Science) and also events organised within this cooperation. The most profound results were uploaded through National bibliographic identifiers and wikidata items from National Library data packs. yearly goal:300.000 links between external identifiers and Wikidata items reality: 405292

14. Were there any metrics in your proposal that you could not collect or that you had to change?

No

15. If you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results, please describe and add any recommendations on how to address them in the future.

There is no relevant tool for data collection that would allow tracking them over time and with the parameters of interest.

We track the maximum through internal tables that allow us to distinguish types of events, numbers of participants, partners, organizers, along with added content (c. However, with our number of activities that we directly prepare or organize (over 300), the table becomes opaque. Ideally, we would need a database, but programming it is beyond our financial means. We have managed to create a Wikinside tool - thanks to another grant - which we hope will be able to capture some of the activities over time. As is clear from the report, we have to combine a number of tools and methods, which makes the annual evaluation of activities fundamentally difficult.

17a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Peer to peer learning with other community members in conferences/events, Peer to peer learning with other community members (but that is not continuous or structured), Using capacity building/training resources onlinee from sources OUTSIDE the Wikimedia Movement

17b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of staff time to participate in capacity building/training, Lack of volunteer time to participate in capacity building/training, Ineffective training opportunities which did not improve capacity

18. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your organizational capacity has grown, and areas where you require support?

Our activities in the CEE region have increased significantly thanks to the Wikimedia CEE Hub project. We are closer to our partners in the region, developing common themes conceptually and on one platform. The whole region has become more connected and we see our role in it - as one of the most developed affiliates – seriously and we try to support the growth of the others.

We came up with the idea of creating a CEE Youth group activity, which has been well received in the region and has quickly caught on and is working well - the first face-to-face meeting was held on behalf of our organisation in Prague. In parallel, we created a Czech Wikimedia Youth Group. Similarly, we support the organization of the annual Wikimedia Europe meeting, which takes place yearly in Prague.

19. Partnerships over the funding period.

Over the fund period...
A. We built strategic partnerships with other institutions or groups that will help us grow in the medium term (3 year time frame) Strongly agree
B. The partnerships we built with other institutions or groups helped to bring in more contributors from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
C. The partnerships we built with other institutions or groups helped to build out more content on underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree

19a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Permanent staff outreach, Partners proactive interest, Other

19b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of staff to conduct outreach to new strategic partners, Lack of staff capacity to respond to partners interested in working with us, Limited funding period

20. Please share your learning about strategies to build partnerships with other institutions and groups and any other learning about working with partners?

We started to build partnerships about 5 years ago and it took time to build a useful strategy, mutual trust and relationships. In the long term, we also face staffing constraints.

Gradually we decided to go down the path of building "strategic partnerships" - i.e. partnerships with central strategic institutions of national importance - we cannot work with local GLAM institutions - we use these for other types of collaborations (EDU, etc.). Here we also respond to demand or develop cooperation where there is already interest, we do not "knock on closed doors". Personal relationships are often essential. We try to arrange a win-win cooperation, with the ultimate goal of establishing a wiki-resident position with a partner. This will accelerate and sustain the collaboration.

Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration edit

21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?

We are long-time grantees and have been involved in the development and implementation of the international strategy of the Wikimedia movement and have been implementing it nationally.

We regularly share knowledge and skills with the rest of the movement, building contacts and an open space for collaboration - especially during conferences and other online meetings. We offer support in developing activities to other affiliates. And we try to offer our outputs internationally - almost all of them have EN subtitles. Last year our awareness video There's en error was used in this way - so far we know about its use in Ukraine. We are one of the founders of Wikimedia Europe and the Wikimedia CEE Hub and ongoing sharing is automatic for us. ED Klára Joklová was elected to the management committee for the second time and is in charge of part of the Hub's agenda. We founded and support the CEE Youth group and Wikimania 2024 preparations in Poland.

22. How has your (for individual grantees) or your group/organization’s (for organizational grantees) sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Stayed the same

23. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.

N/A

24. How has your group/organization’s sense of personal investment in the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Somewhat increased

25. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.

More international sharing due to increase in staff capacity - details mentioned above.

We are trying to do more targeted work at the international level: we have joined international competitions and we are creating better conditions for the success of Czech volunteers - We are looking for ways to link our activities with international ones in a mutually beneficial way.

26. Are there other movements besides the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement that play a central role in your motivation to contribute to Wikimedia projects? (for example, Black Lives Matter, Feminist movement, Climate Justice, or other activism spaces) If so, please describe it below.

Throughout the year, we focus on topics that concern the general public to better engage them in Wikimedia projects - e.g. the SDGs, OER, UNESCO, recommendations, media literacy and fact-checking, etc. In the past year, we have moved forward again - with the establishment and development of the Media Literacy portal on the Czech Wikipedia.

Therefore, we have divided the year into quarters in which we focus on the following topics - women on Wikipedia, human rights and history of Czechoslovakia, and seniors. In addition, the number of libraries in the Czech Republic and the change in their status and role in society is relevant; we take this phenomenon into account when preparing our activities with libraries.

Supporting Peer Learning and Collaboration edit

We are interested in better supporting peer learning and collaboration in the movement.

27. Have you shared these results with Wikimedia affiliates or community members?

Yes

27a. Please describe how you have already shared them. Would you like to do more sharing, and if so how?

All our activities are publicly recorded: - there is a record of everything - news on www.wikimedia.cz in Czech and English,
  • larger events (competition challenges) are publicly evaluated - usually in a blog post
  • invitations go out to community members in several ways - to interested people by email, by announcements on the Village pump, by our social networks
  • through newsletters.

Community members are also briefed by ward councillors, and we hold about 20 open calls during the year - usually after programmes - where we review the past period. Furthermore, we summarize the findings in presentations at conferences, Wiki meetings or other face-to-face meetings.

28. How often do you currently share what you have learned with other Wikimedia Foundation grantees, and learn from them?

We do this regularly (at least once a month)

29. How does your organization currently share mutual learning with other grantees?

Common calls:

– executive directors calls –CEE (Hub) regional calls & Telegram communication – Wikimedia Europe and European collaborative calls – European GLAM coordinators meeting & calls & telegram group – Volunteers support network calls and peer-to-peer learning program – Wikidata affinity group call – global EDU Affiliates calls – CEE regional EDU affiliate calls – global EDU wiki sessions – Educational Newsletter – Diff blog posts, global emailing.

Conference presentations: – Wikimania, – CEE Meeting, – Wiki EDU conference – local conferences (Wikimedia Polska 2023).

Individual experience sharing and support to specific representatives of other beneficiaries.

We supplement our PR videos with English subtitles for wider use.
