Proposal edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Our mission is the collaborative creation of free online content about UNESCO WH (tangible and intangible),through designing and implementing creative projects that are based on participatory activities, and on the use of open projects in collaboration with local partners in different countries. We believe that WH is a potent tool for development and empowerment, that’s why we aim to make knowledge about it widely available and to engage local communities from a knowledge equity perspective.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Many countries with WH sites but with no affiliates: there are many countries in the world and in different regions with WH sites but with no affiliates. The coverage of World Heritage sites belonging to countries with no affiliates is poor and many sites do not even any Wikipedia article in any language. Through collaborating with local partners, we will ensure that the communities that are not yet part of Wikimedia movement are involved in the process of documenting their own heritage.

Affiliates priorities & choices: Huge disparities are witnessed also between countries with affiliates : Being multidimensional, many affiliates can have other priorities and fields of interest (sometimes for several years) and thus they may not implement the project quickly (or at all).

Emergency: Unlike many other thematic, the scope of World Heritage is quickly changing : Many parts of World Heritage sites are endangered and many are lost every year before being documented. Hence, the existence of activities around WH in danger will help tackle this problem.

We believe that World Heritage is a potent tool for development and empowerment, that’s why we aim to make knowledge about it widely available and to engage local communities in documenting their own heritage.

A successful documentation of World Heritage requires a good mastery of several Wikimedia projects, tools(such as Petscan, Wikidata Query Service)but also management and soft skills (e.g. project management, leadership skills, event management, team building) thus we will setup like we did for the previous year a capacity building program to equip our members and partners with these needed skills.

Documenting World Heritage requires also the use of the best formats to show the importance of our heritage and that 's why we are looking forward this proposal to collecting videos about UNESCO cultural heritage as we believe that this is the best format that can be used for documentation besides that fact that our wiki projects lacks video content.

Communication is a key factor and can help to drive sharing and collaborations around heritage documentation. Thus we are looking forward to announcing during the world heritage day (18th of April)the launch of the Wiki Heritage Hour,a monthly video podcast that aims to connect volunteer with Heritage professionals, promote the achievement of the wiki community in documenting the World Heritage and promote sharing ideas and developing collaboration.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Contents generation

  1. WHindangerː WH In Danger: Many parts of World Heritage sites are endangered (e.g. conflicts,Climate Change..)and many are lost every year before being documented. Hence, the importance to continue the project that we started last year (c.f. group report https://w.wiki/4UT2 )and which helped documenting several sites especially in countries without affiliates like Libya (www.whindanger-libya.wiki).
  1. TOldCitiesː WH Cities:it consists in documenting the significant buildings of cities listed as World Heritage on Wikidata,Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Despite the cultural importance of WH cities, some of them are poorly documented on Wikimedia projects.
  1. Wiki Loves Dataviz:We live in a era of data and Wikidata is an amazing free base with millions of data items.Hence the importance of visualizing these data in a more comprehensible and intelligible way for the human mind. Dataviz provides a clear idea to interpret data and understand it. Bear in mind this importance we are looking forward to organizing 2 contests to collect dataviz around built and cultural heritage. These dataviz can be used in the Wikipedia articles to improve the quality of the content.
  1. WHintangible UNESCO Intangible cultural heritage: Intangible world heritage are very important as they are a representation of our traditions, ethnic lifestyles and culture. Despite this importance, they are less documented than tangible heritage and even when documented they are documented in a format that don't reflect a clear idea of it(mainly text). Our objective is to document this part of our heritage in more innovative way with a focus on video production and within countries located in the global south.
  1. WH2BE World Heritage To Be: a proactive project to document future WH sites listed on the UNESCO tentative list.

For 2022,the scope of the activities will focus on at least 10 countries(50% without a Wikimedia affiliates)and will includes the following Key activitiesː

  • co-organizing editathons with local partners (Wikipedia and Wikivoyage)
  • campaign on commons with a photo contest for each country
  • enhancing content on Wikidata and
  • a webinar with Heritage professional to discuss the impact of Climate Change on World Heritage to be coordinated with the Wikimedians for Sustainable Development User Group.

Capacity Building, community support and volunteers recruitment

  1. Training Sessions
  2. Wiki Heritage Hour: promote the achievement of the wiki community in documenting WH

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Fostering collaboration with local affiliates and with Heritage institutions. Ensuring through a capacity building plan the reinforcement of capacities and skills of the group' members.
