We aim to significantly enhance the representation and quality of Yoruba language books on Wikibooks. The goal is to create a robust collection of educational resources that reflect the rich cultural heritage and knowledge of the Yoruba people, an ethnic group of over 48 million individuals in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo.
Challenges and Problems: 1. Underrepresentation: The Yoruba language section on Wikibooks currently lacks comprehensive and quality content, making it difficult for Yoruba speakers and learners to access valuable educational resources.
2. Language Preservation: Without sufficient digital resources, the Yoruba language risks diminished usage among younger generations, leading to a potential erosion of cultural identity.
3. Educational Barriers: The scarcity of resources and content on Wikibooks limits educational opportunities for Yoruba-speaking students, educators, and self-learners.
Main Approaches to Achieve This Change:
1. Edit-a-thon: Create 50 new Yoruba books across various subjects, ensuring they are accurate, engaging, and educational. This will involve both writing existing educational materials and creating new, original content.
2. Content Improvement: Edit and enhance 100 existing Yoruba books to improve their accuracy, quality, readability, and usefulness. This also includes updating and improving outdated information and correcting errors.
3. Community Engagement: Recruit and train 20 new contributors from the Yoruba-speaking community to participate in creating and editing Yoruba books on Wikibooks. This would be done through workshops, online training sessions, and close monitoring and support to ensure high-quality contributions.
4. Promotion and Outreach: We would use social media, partnerships with educational institutions with Yoruba language department to get contributors to improve and create new books on Wikibooks. This will encouraging widespread use and engagement.
