1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Research shows that less than 13% of Wikipedia contributors worldwide were women in 2008. However, there has been some increase in recent times but we need to enlighten and equip women across Africa with the necessary skills needed to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects. In 2020, 18% of the biography articles on English Wikipedia are of women [1] which means there are a lot of gaps to be filled. The aim of this project is to bridge the gender gap and create opportunities to strengthen the gender diverse content on Wikipedia.

Our overall goal is to reduce misinformation on English Wikipedia and also encourage women to contribute to English Wikipedia.

Misinformation on English Wikipedia can be as a result of the wrong use of sources that are actually correct, the use of promotion words when creating an article which is against the neutral point of view (NPOV) pillar of Wikipedia. Encouraging women to join the movement and also reducing the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works on English Wikipedia.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our approaches to achieving the goals of this project includes:

Organizing a series of training sessions to train new editors and also be an avenue to get to equip the existing editors with other necessary skills needed.

A series of online follow-up during the campaign to properly equip them with needed skills about how to edit on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons

Creating or improving contents about Women in Health, Education and Business sector on English Wikipedia.

Training and recruiting new editors for the Wikimedia Community. This will also be an avenue where existing editors get to share their knowledge with new editors so they are all make quality contributions to Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Edit-a-thons and contest will be organized for all participants to practice and show their editing skill.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Sensitization and outreach about the importance of imbibing the spirit of volunteering in women.

Gathering where new users will learn about Wikimedia/Wiki projects and the basics of Wikipedia. Training will cover the right ways for new users to search, edit, obtain, utilize, and improve information on Wikipedia.

There will be a local contest where winners will be awarded local prizes to engage them to contribute more on Wikipedia and its sister projects.
