With over 1.8 billion young people in the world today, their energy, creativity, and drive have brought about unprecedented levels of global youth engagement. Young people are increasingly stepping up as leaders and innovators, creating solutions for pressing global issues and proving their capacity to lead change. Recognizing their potential and contributions is not only an investment for the future but a necessity for the present.

The International Youth Day (IYD), celebrated annually on August 12, provides a unique opportunity to highlight and amplify the voices, actions, and initiatives of young people worldwide. The main goal of IYD is to draw attention to the issues faced by youth, celebrate their achievements, and encourage their meaningful engagement in various spheres of life.

This project aims to bring significant change by empowering and recognizing young Wikimedians who contribute to the Wikimedia movement. It seeks to address the underrepresentation, underappreciation, and lack of documentation of youth contributions in the open knowledge ecosystem. By celebrating their efforts and providing targeted support, this project aims to enhance their skills, boost their engagement, and encourage a sustainable commitment to creating and sharing knowledge.

Challenges:

1.Underappreciation of Contributions: Despite their significant efforts, young Wikimedians often lack recognition, which can demotivate and disengage them.

2. Skill and Knowledge Gaps: Many young potential contributors do not possess the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively participate in Wikimedia projects, creating barriers to sustained engagement.

3. Engagement and Retention: There is a pressing need to foster greater engagement and retention among young Wikimedians, ensuring they remain active and committed to the movement.

4. Thematic Coverage Gaps: Important thematic areas which includes young human rights activists, young educators and topics that align with the 2024 International Youth Day (IYD) theme, which is yet to be unveiled, are often underrepresented on English Wikipedia and on the local languages Wikipedia. Also there is the lack of structured database of these areas on Wikidata .This lack of coverage can limit the visibility and impact of these crucial topics.

Approaches to Achieve the Project's Goals:

1)Creating awareness: This will involve a series of engaging public talks and impactful social media campaigns. Our primary objective is to increase the visibility and engagement of young Wikimedians globally, highlighting their contributions to the Wikimedia movement. Through multi-channel outreach efforts, we aim to gather wider support and participation, showcasing the diverse perspectives and profound insights offered by young contributors. By leveraging public talks, workshops, social media campaigns, and community collaborations, we seek to create a supportive and dynamic environment that values and nurtures the contributions of young people to the open knowledge movement of the Wikimedia Foundation.

2) Community Engagement and Collaboration: To maximize impact we will focus on community engagement and collaboration. This will involve partnering with the growing Wikimedia communities in Ilorin, Imo, Ibadan, and Gombe. By collaborating with these local groups, we aim to foster a sense of collective ownership and participation in the event. These partnerships will facilitate localized workshops, edit-a-thons/Translate-a-thon, and community meetups, ensuring that the unique perspectives and contributions of these regions are highlighted and integrated into the broader goals of Wikivibrance. This approach not only enhances the inclusivity and diversity but also strengthens the local Wikimedia communities, empowering them to continue their valuable work in promoting open knowledge.

3)Content Creation and Enhancement:We will organize a series of dynamic activities, including editing campaigns, workshops, both physical and online training sessions, and engaging edit-a-thons and translate-a-thon. These initiatives will empower both new and experienced editors to create and enhance high-quality articles, thereby bridging the content gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata. By focusing On Young human right activists,Young educators and topics that align with the 2024 International Youth Day (IYD) theme, we aim to ensure that valuable content is well-documented and widely accessible in English and the three local languages. This approach will create a more inclusive platform that reflects the richness of youth contributions to the world, providing the tools, training, and support needed for comprehensive reliable content creation.

This project will empower young Wikimedians, recognize their contributions, and enhance content diversity on Wikimedia platforms. By addressing the challenges of underappreciation, skill gaps, and retention, the project aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for young contributors. Through targeted training, workshops, and engaging activities, the project equips young editors with the skills needed to create high-quality content, focusing on underrepresented areas. By fostering a supportive community and increasing the visibility of young contributors, this project promotes a more inclusive and comprehensive knowledge base, reinforcing Wikimedia's mission to provide free and open access to knowledge for everyone.

The edit a thon session will be complemented by the Community engagement activities which will include success stories from young Wikimedians and interactive discussions to foster a sense of community and networking. The event will conclude with an award presentation to honor outstanding young Wikimedian editors (male and female) from each community for their exceptional contributions, and certificates of participation will be distributed to all participants.

6. Virtual Training (Online Follow-up Training): We will conduct a virtual follow-up training session to continue skill development. Participants will receive targeted instruction from experienced facilitators to further enhance their proficiency in editing and contributing to English Wikipedia,Igbo Wikipedia , Hausa Wikipedia,Yoruba Wikipedia as well as Wikidata. This underscores our commitment to sustained growth and knowledge refinement, ensuring participants are equipped with the necessary tools and insights for impactful contributions.

Prizes, including gift vouchers, will be awarded to the top three contributors, newest editors, and outstanding female contributors across each of the Wikimedia communities in Ilorin, Ibadan, Gombe, and Imo.
