- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
There are a lot of people wanting to edit Wikipedia but don’t know how. A lot of my friends and colleagues always ask me to teach them so they can participate. This takes significant time if done on an individual basis to train every aspiring participant. Through organized projects all of them can be taught in a much easier and programmatic way. This project therefore aims to train these people and even more who may not yet indicate interest but will when we start sending invitations. It’ll also create more awareness about free knowledge and the Wikipedia project. This project will also help fill the Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons content gap around the pertinent articles that we will create and improve during the project and pictures that we upload.
Furthermore we want to engage prospective editors from the state and beyond to become active Wikipedia contributors. This is to help them understand the movement well and further spread it to propel Wikipedia's mission to more people. This is important because the level of awareness around Wikipedia is still low in the area compared to internet penetration statistics. Knowledge of practical editing skills is even lower and we still need more Wikipedia articles and improved ones with good referencing that can be read and benefitted by people. Bringing those participants under one roof is the most effective way to achieve these goals and if properly executed the impact to the movement will be very large and beneficial to Wikipedia and free knowledge
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
We will organize a physical editing and training project. This approach is very effective because of so many reasons. Among them are the ability of quick communication and full understanding and focus on surroundings and activities during the program. Unlike zoom meetings, this approach also has the advantage that there's no network issues that will prevent full participation, internet data problems and electricity issues.
In addition, I believe organizing training with a combination of existing editors and new ones is good strategy that could help address the issues we want improve on, and it will give new ones chance to meet experienced editors to help them and answer their questions on the spot, which is much quicker and more effective than other communication channels.
The strategy of doing the event physically also has the benefit of serving as promotion of advertising of Wikimedia movement to more people, because we will share flyers and posters and also banners, even passers-by will know Wikipedia activity is taking place and that can serve as a means of spreading Wikipedia to even further places and getting more volunteers.

We will organize an in-person editing program in a good location with stable internet provision, to edit articles, train people and discuss ways for development and other opportunities in volunteering for Wikimedia knowledge projects.
Creating 100 articles and improving, and using the opportunity to walk new people through practical editing skills development and community participation.
Post event survey to measure people's understanding of Wikipedia and editing process (we hope this will change for the better, compared to before the project). This will also give us general feedback and advice that may be the basis for follow-up projects to improve and work on other areas.
Keeping in contact through our social media groups with participants and all those who show interest in participating by the end of this training to ensure follow-up of gains realized and sustenance of editing by volunteers. We will also keep people in contact so they can improve their skills on Wikimedia projects by readily getting needed help from more experienced editors and also help to be aware of similar programs such as the ones organized by Hausa group and other people to promote Wikipedia in various states and locations.

This project will provide avenue for participants to improve articles and create new ones especially related to Hausa cultural events and history and contemporary issues in the world. These issues have very shallow coverage or non-existent coverage in many cases. People will also learn editing during the project. So the project is particularly helping to reduce this content gap through creating and improving articles in these categories for greater representation of knowledge on Wikipedia.

The target participants are all interested people from the Katsina metropolis and beyond, and also Wikimedia community members in the region. Participants will be engaged through multiple means including word of mouth, social media invitation and direct emails and calls to existing editors and prospective ones.
All participants also will be subscribed to our Telegram group where more experienced editors will answer questions, and help newcomers. There would be a follow-up survey some few weeks after the project to measure change of knowledge of participants, stay in touch and increase chances of participants to continue volunteering and also help them if they’re facing any issues relating to contributing.
A follow-up project may be organized depending on the outcomes and evaluation report documentation.

The project will be carried out in a place that’s accessible, conducive and safe for all participants to comfortably attend.
The Wikimedia foundation's friendly space policy, Universal Code of Conducts policies and local security and safety guidelines will be duly enforced as appropriate to make sure everyone feels welcomed, safe and comfortable throughout the duration and participates safely in the program.

I hope to learn, through this project, about more effective strategies of improving and creating new Wikipedia articles by both new and existing users. I hope to also learn how to effectively improve content gaps on Wikipedia as well as learn from practical problems and limitations that may arise during the course of the project. I hope to learn from these perspectives through engaging the participants on the main sessions, detailed project evaluation report and also a special brainstorming session and post-project survey and feedback.
