Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The main strategies we followed were those listed on our original proposal, which were to carry out awareness activities that would help us in recruiting potential women editors, creating community of Hausa women editors and partnering with local women groups.

We had successfully did partnership with Taskar Nasaba, Badarawa Women Dev. Centre and members of Jam'iyyar Matan Arewa (JMA) were all represented at the awareness and training programs. We created social media groups like WhatsApp for follow up discussions about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects and ways for improving and sustaining our editing journey.

Another strategy we followed up with was, Wikipedia Contest. We organised a Wikipedia writing contest after the programs and lasted for a month period. We did it in order to keep the new recruits busy by encouraging them to continue editing the Wikipedia thereby helping them stick with the project and not forget what they learnt at the training programs.

We also helped them by supporting the active users who participated in the Contest with weekly data support, so that even those who complained having challenges of internet access because of data limitations would have the chance to join the contest and continue with their editing.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, there were strategies that have effectively helped us achieved our desired goals. The first strategy is to, 'increase the representation of Hausa women on Wikimedia projects.' This approach involves supporting them in contributing articles, images, and other content related to Hausa people, culture, places, and knowledge sharing. We actively involved them in the art of editing Wikipedia projects, including writing contests, creating contact groups, and providing them with data support through out the project period for the most active users. This has served as motivation and increased challenge amongst the participants.

Another effective strategy was the, 'Involvement of Underrepresented Communities: We involved participants from underrepresented communities, such as cultural organisation like Taskar Nasaba, Jamiyyar Matan Arewa and Badarawa Women Development Centre with targeted outreach efforts. This strategy has created inclusive spaces for all, offered them learning resources to the participants and provide accessibility support for them to contribute to Wikipedia. The successes have been measured by the increased participation of individuals from these communities.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Certainly yes, based on the efforts I'd mentioned. The project has engaged participants in the art of editing Wikipedia projects. This includes providing support and resources to help them contribute effectively. This engagement not only encourages participation but also empowers the participants to take an active role in content creation themselves. They participated in contributing articles, images, and other content related to Hausa people, culture, and places. By encouraging these contributions, we enriches the Wikipedia platforms with valuable and diverse information.

So, also the "writing contest" provides them with an opportunity to encourage content creation and motivated them to actively contribute and compete in a friendly manner, leading to the expansion of content. Another strategy is the data Support for the most active users. This commitment is to sustain and nurture contributors. By offering assistance and resources to those who are highly engaged and ensures their continued involvement and contributions.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

One valuable lessons learned was the Involvement of cultural women's groups and organizations which has proven effective in attracting potential women editors to contribute to Wikipedia projects. This has highlighted to us the importance of targeted outreach and collaboration with relevant community partners in efforts to increase diversity and participation in online platforms like Wikipedia. It's a practical example that can be applied in similar initiatives to engage underrepresented groups and promote inclusivity.

Also, another lesson learned was the barriers to women's participation in the project, particularly related to digital literacy and social norms. Recognizing that many women aren't digitally literate has underscored the importance of providing educational resources and training for navigating online spaces like Wikipedia. So, also social norms, women are traditionally discouraged to going beyond the status quo and Wikipedia is an open source platform that wasn't known before, so many women are skeptical of what it is.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Actually, some positives did happen and we haven't expected them. The eagerness of the women we invited to learn has given us hope that we are on the right track, because when people are willing to learn, nothing can stop them from learning it. It now depends on us to keep them informed. Another thing was the support of the partner organizations who gave out their members, this was also amazing. Though, Wikipedia is really beyond what one could imagine. Our people value it more than you may think.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Sure, the effectiveness of involving cultural women's groups and organizations can inform outreach strategies in similar projects. By collaborating with relevant community partners can be a proven approach to attract underrepresented women groups.

Barriers to entry like digital literacy. Future efforts can be designed with educational programs and training that specifically target the needs of women participants. This could include digital literacy skills workshops and resources tailored to their requirements.

Challenge Social Norms. Addressing social norms that discourage women from participating online may require broader community engagement and advocacy efforts. Initiatives which can work toward changing perceptions and creating more inclusive online communities.
