Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The Wikimedians user group of Benin organized, as at the international level, the third edition of the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos contest. Thanks to our local community, we achieved our goals. The contributions helped to improve the quality of the Wikipedia content on Benin on the French Wikipedia portal and the Wikipedia Fon language incubator. Contributions have increased the use of photos uploaded during previous wiki loves photo contests (land, monuments, Africa, Folklore...). New articles have been created and new contributors have joined our community. This year we organized physical activities for the first time for this campaign since the COVID-19 restriction was lifted. Overall, we are very satisfied with the way the project went.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

This year's face-to-face organization allowed us to reach out to other target groups who are beginning to take an interest in Wikipedia and its sister projects, as well as to reconnect with last year's volunteers who served as mentors for the younger ones. With this third edition of the WPWP, the Beninese wikimedia community strengthens the passion of its members who like to contribute directly through the face-to-face sessions thus creating an easy inter-action. The constant support and the listening of the contributors involved have allowed us to reach our objectives in the whole.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

The efforts helped to attract participants because it allowed us to travel and train people in their geographic area and better explain the project to them directly without necessarily having to worry about connections in the exchanges. This allowed the participants to better express themselves in the content and especially in the creation of articles on places or agglomerations as well as on personalities. This diversity shows the interest of the one and the others through their center of interests and the thematic that they want to approach or that they like to approach.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

During this period, which remains a first, because the activities were done in person, I had the chance to know people in a physical way. This allowed me to better understand the desire of people to contribute what often prevents them and their desires and willingness to have regular contributions through regular training even after the project.

But the best thing that happened to me is the change of mentality of the participants from one geographical area to another or you see the interest of contributions on a given theme changes from one area to another. As in Cotonou, the desire remains the contribution on several themes in a varied way and in Ouidah the desire of the contributors has more to write on the culture and tradition of their while bringing the images to enrich them if they receive more training in the sense.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Even though in general everything went well, nevertheless, we faced a slight discouragement from the participants who experienced IP address blockages throughout the process. But instead of giving up, we strongly encouraged them to continue uploading media even after the project was over. Those who were not able to put the media online followed the process of others without being able to contribute via their user account. Even if it creates a feeling of helplessness, i explain the need for blocking because it helps to avoid vendalisms.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

- Yes of course. In fact, everything we do makes you want to go even further, so before the launch of WPWP 2023 I plan to tour cities and towns that are not lucky enough to have the opportunity to follow the training to inform them of the Foundation's projects and show them how to contribute. For this, for over a year, I had been preparing a series of trips to schools in the north of my country, which is not very accessible and at times lacks the infrastructure found in the schools of the capital. This trip will allow the use of Foundation projects in 3 schools in the north of my country and in this case to students and teachers in order to make free knowledge fair and also to show them that thanks to a smartphone we can also brought a plus to this knowledge while respecting the rules and principles of the community. So it will still reach layers of people who are not represented or who do not necessarily know much about the projects.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
