It has been observed that most members in institutions do not accept Wikimedia sources for references when supervising research work or even vetting students assignments. They believe that Wikimedia is an open space and anybody can dump anything there and by that Wikimedia sources are not reliable and verifiable. Also, some students do not even know that having knowledge of editing Wikimedia articles can help improve their digital literacy skills, research skills, critical thinking skill and learning new things outside the regular academic activities. As a result, this project proposal will sensitize and train Academic community of Ummah College of Health and Science and Technology School on how they can harness the various articles on Wikimedia for their research work and even get to understand how they can provide reliable citations to Wikimedia articles. The project will also help students and staff to successfully use Wikimedia (and other Wikimedia products) to search, access, retrieve, interpret, and monitor the information consumed. Program Goals

1.Introduce and create awareness among staff and students of ummah college of health Science and Technology on the effective usage of Wikimedia and its sister projects such as Wikicommons, and Wikidata as a teaching, learning and research tool for retrieving, creating, and evaluating information
2.Mindset shift from not accepting Wikimedia sources as reliable to allowing students to cite wikipedia sources
3.Train the staff and students on how they can edit Wikimedia articles by adding reliable citations to articles
4.Recruit 50 new editors

1. There will be a 2 days training for the staff and student where they get to know how to create a wikimedia account, search for articles that need citations using the citation hunt and other editing that can be done to improve a wikipedia article

2. While the in-house training is ongoing, there will be a 1 day of awareness within the school, inviting staff and student to the training.This will serve as a means of sensitization.
3. The first day of the training will be to explain the importance of having Wikimedia editing knowledge, how it can improve digital literacy skills, research skill, and among others to students and staff of ummah college of health science and technology.
4. The second day of the training will be to explain the importance of having wikipedia editing knowledge, how it can improve digital literacy skills, research skill, and among others to staff and student of community health department.
5. The two days in-person training will be followed by another two days online training.
6. Edit-a-thon will follow where participants can practicalize all they have learnt and there will be some form of motivation to participants with highest number of edits. Certificates will also be given out to participants.
7. Follow-up on all active participants to see how well they are improving on the skills gained during the project.

• Bembety is a skilled editor with experience in Wikimedia projects. He will serve as the project lead and an informed person about the host institution, Ummah College of health science and technology. Bembety has actively participated in various Wikimedia initiatives, Awareness and Trainee program at the Gombe edit-a-thon. He is a participant in Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo project, the Wikimedia promotion in Akure, and Wikimedia awareness in Federal University Kashere in Nigeria and Africa Day Campaign in Kwara State University and Africa the Campaign Writing Contents 2023 and OFWA Cumulative and Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria. Federal University, Kashere and Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria and 1Lib1Rep Nigeria and Wikipedia Awareness in AKKO and Wiki-Cred Boot-Camp for Information Professionals in Nigeria and Wiki Climate Campus Tour- University of Benin and Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria Summit University OFFA and Wik Climate Campus Tour Nigeria University of Port Harcourt.

  • Gwanki will be the offline facilitator, responsible for discussing the rudiments of Wikidata and how to upload on Commons Wiki.
  • Usmanagm: is a seasoned trainer and skilled organizer who plays a vital role in the development of Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria. He acts as the project lead for Wikimedia Awareness in Akko and will support the lead in raising awareness during the offline campaign. Additionally, Usmanagm is part of the facilitators' team contributing to the project's success.
  • MeritKosy: is an experienced Wikimedian who have participated in several Wikimedia event and project lead, Wikimedia Awareness and Training in Federal College of Education (Technical). She is one of the nearest facilitators to the community and will be on ground.
  • Volunteers: Two volunteers from the student body will be identified to assist in every possible like during refreshment time,agreement of the hall, guarding people the the event center.
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants for our project are the members of the university community, and no prior experience with Wikimedia is necessary to participate. We will engage potential participants through various means, including interactions with the student union, associations, faculty officers, and lecture halls. During the project, we will actively facilitate the training, ensuring that participants gain the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to Wikipedia and sister projects. Additionally, we will monitor the three-week online edit-a-thon to prevent any vandalism or misinformation.

The project will contribute to the development of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons by building knowledge and creating more active editors, as well as improving the quality of photo uploads. To ensure sustainability, we will create a WhatsApp group called Ummuh College of health science and technology Wikimedia Community, where participants can stay in touch, discuss Wikimedia projects, and stay updated on the latest events and workshops. Additionally, we will welcome the Ummuh College of health science and technology Wikimedians Community into the Hausa Wikimedians User Group to ensure continued engagement and participation in Wikimedia projects.

He is the international content creator award winner for 2022 AfroCreative award. He served the Project lead of Wikimedia Promotions in Federal University Kashere and Wikimedia Promotions in Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo.


Usmanagm: is a seasoned trainer and skilled organizer who plays a vital role in the development of Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria. He acts as the project lead for Wikimedia Awareness in Akko and will support the lead in raising awareness during the offline campaign.
