1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
  • Currently almost 95% of articles in Fulfulde Wikipedia are about countries and major cities around the world. This project seek to improve and increase the quality of the articles as well as develop new contents to explore around other thematic areas like culture and history, education, biographies, monuments, fashion, heritage among others.
  • The Fulfulde Wikimedians thematic weeks will serve as a massive call to all volunteers within the user group to engage in the cleaning-up of contents on Fulfulde Wikipedia by improving them with proper citations, references and adding new sections and information to Stub articles.
  • There is still need for an increase in the awareness about Fulfulde Wikipedia. The thematic weeks will therefore serve as an approach for promoting Fulfulde Wikipedia and recruiting new volunteers.
  • Wikimedia Foundation have supported our community in purchasing some key equipment/material needed in training new volunteers. We therefore want to make good use of this material in a proper way hence that give us the idea of having the thematic weeks.
  • We want to build partnership with Fulfulde language Media organizations who will be broadcasting our theme in each week and also engage their staff by training them on how to become contributors of Fulfulde Wikipedia this is because establishing possible collaboration will help us to cover a very wide communities of the Fulfulde speaking populace thereby increasing our visibility and increasing the level of our promotion as well as in bringing new volunteers.
  • Fulfulde Wikipedia is in verge of becoming a large community of editors representing the estimated over 24 million global population of the Fula ethnic group. Therefore, teaching the community members knowledge about leadership roles and respect for the Wikipedia guided principles is of great importance and this can be achieved through the thematic weeks.
  • Improve the retention and engagement of the existing editors of Fulfulde Wikipedia.
2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our strategies are as follows:

  • We will be organizing a meet-up and training edit-a-thon at the beginning of every thematic week to announce the theme of that week and retrain the participants on the areas we realized they need more coaching and support.
  • Part of our goals is to recruit new set of editors who will serve as the Fulfulde Wikipedia volunteers. Therefore, we will be organizing the events in a rotary manner (hosting each training event in a community that is different from the previous) thereby helping us in reaching out to more and more Fulfulde speaking communities and that will roughly gave us a chance to locate at least 4 - 6 communities.
  • We will use the collaborative partnership we are about to establish with media companies including Radio stations and online news channels to our advantage as a means of promoting the event and in addition to our social media channels.
  • We will at the end of the project designate from the locations of the communities which the thematic weeks were hosted the most engaged/contributed groups and launched them as Wikimedia Fulfulde Community Hubs/Fan Clubs/Networks in order to motivate them and ensure the retention of their very active participants.
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
  • We will be hosting 6 meet-ups/trainings every other week for a period of 3 months. This will includes other Wikimedia projects like Wikidata and commons but priority will be giving to Fulfulde Wikipedia and major contributions will be on it.
  • Hold on air interviews to promote the activities of Wikipedia and related projects in Fulfulde Langauge.
  • Create an online meeting space to share feedback and encourage the participants at the end of each thematic week before moving to another.

Yes, we have the team to implement this proposal. They are;

  • Musaddam Idriss who will be the Project lead
  • Ibrahim442 who will be the event co-ordinator
  • Mamman AA who will be the event communications and liaison officer
  • All other community members will be volunteers in this project

The project's target audience are the Wikimedia Fulfulde Community, Media Companies, Staff and Students of various educational institutions as well as individuals/organizations who may be interested to join the activities when attracted by our online and/or offline campaigns.

We will ensure the use of all security/safety measures of local authorities and also abide by the WMF friendly space policies.

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

1. We hope to learn whether having a series of trainings in promptly will help in establishing constant engagement and retention of recruited participants.

2. We hope to learn whether the campaigns we are going to develop when organizing these thematic weeks will open doors to opportunities for Fulfulde speakers in remote areas and those with expertise knowledge in various profession as well as the current editors to learn and understand that writing on Fulfulde Wikipedia is not specified to locations and places only, rather it can covers all areas of life just like the English Wikipedia.
3. We hope to learn whether through this event, editing of Wikimedia projects in Fulfulde language will be sustained enough and more group of contributors will be trained.
4. We will also hope to learn what can be done to improve awareness about Fulfulde Wikipedia in our community in preparation for having greater impacts in our subsequent project.
