The Change

The primary change we are to bring is to empower and enable the Wikimedian editors in Kano State to actively contribute to the Wikimedia Commons project. By organizing the first-ever Wikimedia Commons Workshop in Kano State, we will provide editors with the necessary skills and knowledge to upload and curate media files, thereby enriching the Wikimedia Commons repository with diverse and high-quality content from the region.

The Main Challenges or Problems

  • Lack of Awareness and Skills: Although there are several Wikimedian editors in Kano State, many are not familiar with how to contribute to the Wikimedia Commons project. This lack of awareness and skill set prevents them from participating effectively in the project.
  • Underrepresentation of Local Content: Kano State, with its rich cultural heritage and significant events, is underrepresented on Wikimedia Commons. There is a scarcity of locally sourced media content that accurately represents the region's diversity and heritage.
  • Community Engagement and Support: There is a need for a stronger sense of community among Wikimedian editors in Kano State, along with better support systems for those who wish to contribute to Wikimedia Commons.

Main Approaches to be Achieved'

To address these challenges, the following approaches will be undertaken:

  • Organizing the Workshop: The core of the initiative will be a hands-on workshop specifically designed for Wikimedian editors in Kano State. This workshop will cover the basics of contributing to Wikimedia Commons, including how to upload media files, categorize them, and understand licensing requirements.
  • Training and Mentorship: The workshop will include training sessions led by experienced Wikimedians. These sessions will not only provide practical skills but also offer ongoing mentorship to participants, helping them navigate any challenges they encounter post-workshop.
  • Outreach and Engagement: We will conduct outreach activities to attract a diverse group of participants from different backgrounds within Kano State. This will ensure that the content uploaded to Wikimedia Commons represents a broad spectrum of the region’s culture and heritage.
  • Creating Support Networks: Establishing a local network of Wikimedia Commons contributors who can support each other and share best practices will be a priority. This network will also facilitate continuous learning and collaboration among the participants.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: To ensure the effectiveness of the workshop, we will implement a monitoring and evaluation plan. This will help track participants' progress, gather feedback, and make necessary adjustments to future workshops.

By addressing these challenges through structured training and community support, we aim to significantly increase the contributions from Kano State to Wikimedia Commons, thereby enhancing the representation of the region’s unique culture and heritage on a global project.
