The project's goal is to introduce the inaugural Wikimedia training and awareness program in Taraba State. With a population of over 3 million people as per the 2006 Nigeria Census, Taraba State boasts various educational institutions, including Taraba State University Jalingo, Kwararrafa State University Wukari, Federal University Wukari, and several other colleges and polytechnics. Despite the presence of these educational institutions and intellectual clubs and associations in the state, there is a noticeable absence of active Wikipedia editors and initiatives aimed at promoting Wikipedia and its projects within Taraba State.

This proposal primarily aims to establish a robust Wikimedia training and awareness initiative within the state. The goal is to address the lack of representation on Wikimedia platforms and enhance the involvement of Taraba State residents in contributing to Wikipedia and related projects. By doing so, the proposal seeks to narrow the information gap, promote local knowledge, and ensure that Taraba State's rich cultural heritage and educational accomplishments are accurately and comprehensively represented on Wikimedia platforms.

The key challenges and issues this proposal seeks to resolve include the limited awareness about Wikimedia projects, the restricted access to training and resources for potential editors, and the absence of region-specific content on Wikipedia related to Taraba State. The underrepresentation from the state hampers the accurate portrayal of its history, culture, institutions, and achievements on a global scale.

To achieve this transformation, the project intends to adopt a multifaceted approach and provide solutions to the identified problems. This includes organizing training sessions, workshops, and seminars across educational institutions in the state. These events will educate participants about Wikimedia projects, encourage them to become editors, and equip them with the necessary skills to contribute effectively. Collaboration with existing intellectual clubs, associations, and educational institutions will be instrumental in raising awareness and nurturing a community of Wikipedia contributors.

Furthermore, the proposal aims to establish partnerships with local government bodies, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. These partnerships will offer support, resources, and platforms for the initiative to thrive. By engaging academia, cultural leaders, and government representatives, the proposal seeks to create a sustainable environment for Wikimedia activities in Taraba State.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The proposed activities for the "Wikimedia Awareness in Taraba State" project are outlined as follows:

Two-Day In-Person Workshops: Conducted by three out of four facilitators, these workshops will span two days. They aim to equip participants with fundamental knowledge about Wikipedia. Participants will create accounts and engage in on-site minor edits, providing a hands-on experience to acquaint them with Wikipedia's editing process.

Two Series of Online Reinforcement Training: With the assistance of two online facilitators, this segment will involve two sets of online training sessions. These sessions will concentrate on refining participants' editing skills on Wikipedia and instructing them on how to upload multimedia files on Wiki Commons. The goal is to enhance participants' proficiency and address any areas of weakness.

One Day Review Session: Following the initial two-day physical workshops and two days of online training, a two-week interval will be provided. During this time, participants will be encouraged to apply their newfound knowledge by editing and contributing to Wikimedia projects. The one-day, in-person review session will follow this interval.

Two-Week Edit-a-thon: A two-week Edit-a-thon will ensue, wherein participants will actively engage in editing Wikipedia articles. Outstanding contributors will be acknowledged with certificates of excellence and prizes. A WhatsApp group will be utilized to facilitate communication, foster editing, and address any queries participants may have.

One-Day Physical Session (Conclusion): Serving as the concluding day of the project, this one-day physical session will bring participants together. The session's objectives encompass reviewing participants' work, providing clarifications as needed, addressing questions and concerns, and ultimately conferring certificates to recognize their participation and contributions to the project.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. To the best of my knowledge, I am currently the sole editor in Taraba, one of the 36 states in Nigeria. 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

This proposal aims to actively involve the diverse youth and students of Taraba State. Our strategy involves engaging participants prior to the project's commencement through local radio stations and clubs. We will distribute an online form for data collection and registration. Throughout the project, my colleague and I will take on an integral role in facilitating the training, ensuring that participants acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for contributing effectively to Wikipedia and its affiliated projects. The training program is structured to encompass three in-person sessions and two online sessions, providing editors with comprehensive guidance on addressing knowledge gaps and creating content across various Wikimedia projects.

To guarantee the project's longevity, participants will be encouraged to join the Wikimedia community after the events. This approach will keep them informed and motivated to partake in various Wikipedia initiatives. Additionally, participants will be integrated into existing communication channels for ongoing support, updates, and any queries they may have. They will also receive invitations to forthcoming events. To maintain close contact with project participants, a WhatsApp group named "Taraba State Wikimedia Community" will be established. This platform will serve as a hub for discussions related to Wikimedia project development. Furthermore, it will be utilized to disseminate information about upcoming Wikipedia events and workshops, particularly those involving collaborations with other user groups.
