Owo, situated in Ondo State, Nigeria hold an exceptional status in the southwestern region as a city known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Owo is renowned for having the largest Palace in Africa which was declared a national monument by the federal government as it serves as a cultural landmark in Nigeria. The city is the home of antiques and sculptures due to the presence of museums and its location between the two famous art centres of Ife and Benin.

The city is also home to distinguished educational institutions such as Achievers University, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic and standard medical institutions such as Federal Medical Centre Owo. Yet, despite the prominent places in the community, an observable gap remains, revealing a depletion of editors, initiatives and a lack of awareness aimed at fostering Wikimedia's growth within the core of the Owo community. As a vibrant member of this community, having personally discovered the leverage of Wikimedia, I feel the commitment to initiate the first Wikimedia awareness campaign and training program in Owo.

This initiative aims to facilitate the transition of new editors and the emergence of devoted advocates for Wikimedia projects. The Wikimedia Community in Owo will serve integral objectives. Primarily, it indicates an avenue to showcase the city's contributions in the part of ancient history, local traditions, art, festivals and cuisine to Nigeria's cultural landmark. The presence of a Wikimedian community significantly expands Owo's global visibility and credibility.

The project aims to train and recruit 50 editors who are residents of Owo. By establishing Wikipedia and its sister projects awareness in Owo, we hope to lay a strong foundation for the utilization of Wikimedia outcomes, particularly among the youth. Likewise, this proposed month-long endeavour holds the guarantee of addressing content gaps that presently exist in various articles across different topics.

Working with experienced editors, we intend to promote the coverage of notable local and international intellectuals, institutions, tourist attractions, and historical areas within Owo on Wikipedia. Unlike other communities where there has been a series of training and presence of the Wikimedia community, there has never been any training which could expose people in Owo community to Wikimedia projects and how they can contribute to them. If approved, this project will establish the inaugural Wiki community meetup in Owo, designed to keep participants engaged with ongoing and future Wikimedia-related activities in the community.

Main approaches to achieve these changes:

This initiative aims to promote the active involvement of students and youths across various institutions, clubs, and associations within the Owo community. Our main approaches to navigating these changes involve the training and recruitment of 50 new editors from different higher institutions and youth associations in Owo. To raise awareness about Wikimedia projects among Owo participants, we recognize that many are familiar with English Wikipedia but are less acquainted with other language options, such as Yoruba.

Given that Yoruba is the dominant language in the community, our training project will prioritize Yoruba Wikipedia and other sister projects that advocate for free knowledge and open access to information. This strategy is developed to cater for the specific needs of the community. Establishing a community of Wikimedia editors in Owo is integral to our approach.

As an active and prominent Yoruba Wikipedia editor who has contributed to a lot of Wikimedia campaigns, I will serve as a facilitator for both online and offline sessions. This partnership with the Yoruba User group will aid the project execution in the community. Further, the creation of a WhatsApp group for new editors will facilitate collaboration. Participants will be trained in contributing effectively to various Wikimedia Projects. This comprises creating Wikipedia accounts, understanding core content policies and general editing principles, creating new articles, and making minor edits.

These skills will enable them to improve content related to individuals, places and institutions in Owo. To ensure progress and to provide assistance during the project, we will utilize the outreach dashboard. This tool will track contributions and offer one-on-one support to offline and online editors, further enabling engagement and effective participation.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will transit for a month and its purpose is to introduce Wikimedia to the Owo community through a comprehensive design:

1. Conducting a two-day in-person workshop: For two days, participants will obtain hands-on training from four facilitators. This workshop will cover crucial skills such as account creation and basic edits. With the first Physical training being the first week of the campaign and the second one being the third week of the campaign. 2. Hosting two batches of online support training: To enhance participants' editing proficiency on Wikipedia and Wikicommons, the project will present online sessions. Experienced facilitators will guide these sessions, targeting areas where participants need improvement. With the first online training being the second week of the campaign and the second one being the fourth week of the campaign. 3. Assessment session: At the end of this period, an assessment session will take place. This session will have to do with assessing participants' work, attending to queries, and disseminating certificates. Outstanding contributors will be acknowledged with certificates of excellence. A devoted WhatsApp group will serve as a forum for interaction, motivating participants to edit and seek guidance. 4. Establishing a Wikimedia editors community in Owo: The project will entail the creation of a sustainable editors community. This community will ensure the ongoing exchange of knowledge and collaboration among editors. In essence, these activities collectively seek to introduce the Owo community to Wikimedia projects, equip participants with editing skills, and inaugurate a lasting community of Wikimedia editors.
