1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Through this project I am trying to introduce individuals with a medical background to contribute to Wikimedia projects. Most students in my college (College of Health Sciences, Unilorin) do not know how to edit Wikimedia projects.

As a member of the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin (a different campus from my college), I have always been asked by school mates how WIkipedia can be edited. A number of individuals have expressed this interest over and over again.. This project was born out of this need.

When medical students and students studying health corses are able to edit wikimedia projects, they are able to contribute and preserve medical knowledge. For instance, understanding how to use wikidata will help in research work which will eventually improve the health and lives of Africans and the world at large.

In the teaching hospital where i train, even though WIkimedia is used to obtain information, most doctors and other health professionals cannot edit or contribute to wikipedia and other projects.

When future health professionals acquire editing skills, they are able to contribute information to the medical aspect of Wikimedia projects especially. Also when health professionals edit medical articles themselves, they are more likely to present more accurate information that is without ambiguity compared to when it is edited by someone with no medical/health background

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

1. Building the capacity of the community members While all members of our community are digitally literate to some extent, an approach we would take to achieve those changes will be to build and improve their capacity. Through our activities and meetups, we will impart more computer skills which will help us achieve our aims.

2. Improving research skills

To contribute to Wikimedia projects properly, a sound source with accurate information and references is very important. Through our meetings, participants will be taught basic researching skills

3. Constant follow-up/communication

For new editors, there is a need to practice constantly to get the hang of it. More especially as medical students / health students usually have a busy schedule. To achieve our aims, there would be flexible yet constant follow-up via channels such as WhatsApp to help new editors with challenges they may have and as well encourage them

4. A edit ladder to motivate members to keep editing
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
