Change We Are Trying to Bring:

We aim to create a more inclusive and diverse Wikimedia community by empowering underrepresented groups, such as women, ethnic minorities, in order to actively contribute to Wikimedia projects. This change will enhance the representation of diverse perspectives and local knowledge on Wikimedia projects, making them more comprehensive and reflective of global cultures and experiences.

Main Challenges or Problems:

  • Lack of Diversity Among Contributors: Currently, the Wikimedia community lacks sufficient representation from various underrepresented groups. This results in a skewed portrayal of knowledge and cultural heritage.
  • Knowledge Gaps: Important cultural, historical, and societal information related to underrepresented groups is often missing or underrepresented on Wikimedia projects.
  • Digital Literacy: Many potential contributors lack the digital literacy skills needed to effectively edit and contribute to Wikimedia projects.
  • Sustainability: There is a need to establish a sustainable community of new editors who can continuously contribute and support future generations of contributors.

Approaches to Achieve the Change:

  • Workshops and Training Sessions: We will organize workshops and training sessions to equip participants with the necessary skills to edit Wikipedia, create new articles, and contribute to Wikimedia Commons. These sessions will cover both technical skills and editorial guidelines.
  • Edit-a-thons: By conducting focused edit-a-thons, we will create and improve articles related to the culture, history, and notable figures of underrepresented groups. These events will provide hands-on experience and immediate contributions to Wikimedia projects.
  • Mentorship Program: Establishing a mentorship program will pair new editors with experienced Wikimedians who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement. This will help new contributors overcome initial challenges and stay engaged.
  • Community Building Events: Regular meetups and community events will be organized to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a sense of belonging among participants. These events will help build a strong and supportive community of editors.
  • Outreach and Engagement: We will engage with local organizations, community groups, and educational institutions to reach a wider audience and encourage participation from diverse backgrounds.

By addressing these challenges and implementing these approaches, we aim to create a more inclusive, diverse, and sustainable Wikimedia community that better represents global knowledge and perspectives.
