In September 2023, St. Eustatius will participate for the first time in the world's largest digital photography competition aimed at promoting cultural heritage. The island is part of the Netherlands (was formerly a part of the Dutch Antilles, until 2010) but we could not select it in the Rapid form. St. Eustatius is a 21 Km2 island in the northern Caribbean with a population of 3200. The island does not have tropical beaches or a lot of tourists, but it does have a long and important history. Once about 20-25.000 people lived on the island and it is estimated that about 700.000 enslaved people were sold on the island, which was the central hub in the international slave trade. The island is an open air museum. Some call it the Pompeii of the Caribbean because so much of its history is still unescavated and undiscovered. The participation in Wiki Loves Monuments is an important step in putting the island's history on the map and reconnecting the local population to its cultural heritage.

Objective 1: The contest stipulates that registered monuments should be photographed. This is a challenge on the small island. Although the island has hundreds of monuments and archaeological sites, the official registration is not up to date. The competition creates a timely momentum to digitally revamp the lagging monument registration (since the 1990s) in St. Eustatius,

Objective 2: The photo competition is an excellent way to interest the local population, especially the youth, in the rich history of the island. It promotes cultural knowledge, interaction and creativity. The WLM concept promotes active participation in the digital recording and description of cultural heritage and this subject is relatively new to the island. Although the island is an open museum and played a key role in slavery past in the Caribbean, its history is relatively unknown to the outside world and even on the island itself.

Objective 3: By participating in this competition, a large number of photos of St. Eustatius will become digitally available on Wikipedia for general use, thereby making the important history of the island better known to the outside world.

Together with the Department of Culture and Events of the public entity of St. Eustatius, in collaboration with the local schools and representatives of Wiki Loves Monuments in the Netherlands, I will (as a volunteer) help to coordinate the competition on St. Eustatius. We hope that participation in WLM will not only jumpstart interest in cultural history in the younger generations but that in working with their parents (through the schools) we can also stimulate child/parent co-creation. Many kids will have to use their parents' phone and camera's. The hope the project will also trigger an oral history project in which stories from (elderly) residents related to the monuments are recorded.

Based on the preliminary list of monuments (as compiled in the 1990s) enlarged by monuments that have since then been discovered, we will photograph the island's many monuments and sites. Although the competition is open to everyone, of course, this project is geared towards involving schools (through the department of culture and events of St. Eustatius), the students and their parents or caretakers. Through the department of culture, the project will also involved SECAR (archaeology, NGO) and the Historical Foundation (supervises the local museum, NGO), as well as STENAPA (Natural Heritage, NGO). Also, the local library will be involved

Partners: Department of Culture and Events of the Public Entity (through them SECAR, the Historical Foundation, STENAPA), the directorate of Social Domain of St. Eustatius, and the Gwendoline van Putten School (the sole secondary and vocational school in St. Eustatius), the public library, the government information service

Timeline: Schools: A) Inform the parents and caretakers of the project (over the summer) B) Start with several instructional classes in early September: 1) on photography with a professional photographer of the island 2) on how to work with Wiki Loves Monuments and how to upload in the right way (via videolink with WLM Netherlands) C) Create flyers and share with the general public (digitally via Social Media and in print) in early September and informing the owners of the heritage sites when necessary. As September is also the international heritage month, activities in other 9neighbouring countries and for instance Aruba) will also be shared. D) Large get-together with all kids and parents/caretakers before the start of the project, with the Government Commissioner and the Island Council, and all partners, around 15 September E) WLM St. Eustatius (3 days 22/23/24 September), during this time the students, accompanied by their parents/caretakers and teachers will take photographs of cultural heritage monuments and sites, based on a list created by the department of culture. A local camera team will film some of the aspects of the days and conduct interviews. F) A local jury of experts will select the best photographs and these will be printed and shown in an exhibition in the local library during a special event (1-10 October). All aspects of the timeline will also be shared with WLM and the results and promo material will be shared with them too.

All school children will accompanied by a teacher, a parent or legal guardian during the project. The project will be embedded in the school environment.

I have been working in the field of international cultural heritage for the last 15 years. I helped to establish the MOU between WLM and the European heritage organisation Europa Nostra back in 2012. I was on the international jury for several years. Before I started my job on the island (January 2023) I had contact with representatives of Wiki Loves Monuments to bring the competition to the island for the first time and they encouraged me. After discussions with the department of culture, they immediately understood and embraced the idea to involve the only secondary school on the island. The organiser of the Most Remarkable Teens (a validation for teens who are active in the community) also immediately saw the potential of the idea to involve the young people and their parents/caretakers in the rich cultural heritage of the island, especially now in the year of commemoration of the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands.

I hope to learn if this approach to WLM: working with secondary schools and bu involving the children involving the parents/caretakers is a good way to reach the set objectives (generate more interest and sensibility for cultural heritage, create a positive school/parent/caretaker/child cooperation, realize a body of photographs of monuments and sites which will help in protecting them against uncontrolled development). I hope to learn if this approach will also help to jump-start the process of monuments protection: it could be a model that can be successful in some African countries and in the Caribbean, as many do not have elaborate lists of protective monuments and sites.
