6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Wiki Loves Earth is a photography competition that aims to capture images of the natural beauty and heritage of different countries around the world. Participating in this competition will have a significant impact on both the Wikimedia movement and the awareness about Wikimedia Foundation within Zambia.

  • Lack of documentation: Many of Zambia's natural landscapes, wildlife, and heritage sites are not well-documented or widely known.
  • Limited awareness: There is a general lack of public awareness about the importance of conserving natural resources and the role Wikimedia platforms can play in this.
  • Resource constraints: There are limited resources available for organizing expeditions to remote areas and capturing high-quality images.

Change: By participating in Wiki Loves Earth 2024, we aim to increase the representation of Zambia’s natural beauty on Wikimedia Commons, promoting environmental awareness and appreciation within the country. This project will foster a deeper connection with the environment among participants and the wider community. Our Approaches:

  • Photography Competitions and Expeditions: We will organize events and expeditions to capture high-quality images of Zambia’s stunning landscapes, waterfalls, wildlife, and heritage sites. These photographs will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, making them freely accessible and usable by anyone worldwide.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Conducting outreach and educational campaigns to highlight the importance of natural resource conservation and the benefits of contributing to Wikimedia projects. This will include workshops, social media campaigns, and collaboration with educational institutions.
  • Collaboration with Local Knowledge Mappers Zambia: Partnering with Local Knowledge Mappers Zambia to leverage their expertise and resources. This collaboration will help in accurately mapping and documenting natural sites, ensuring comprehensive and valuable contributions to Wikimedia Commons.

By addressing these challenges with these approaches, we aim to bring significant positive change. This project will not only enhance the documentation of Zambia’s natural heritage but also promote a culture of environmental stewardship and knowledge sharing within the community.
