1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

We started to organize the Italian contest of Wiki Loves Earth in 2018 trying not only to organize a photo contest but also creating and maintaining an "infrastructure", to do so:

  • we created and now do the maintenance of Wikidata items for all Italian protected areas
  • we engaged different category of participants, on one side of course the photographers who participate in the photocontest but we have organized also writing activities to incourage editors to write articles on Wikipedia, create items on Wikidata or link Wikidata items with images from the contest improving the usage of the pictures. In pre-covid times we used to organize also phototours in natural parks with professional guides.

We would like to better engage the people who showed some interest for the contest and the related content and to improve the usage of the images from the contest 2022.

We would like to keep the interest high around Wiki Loves Earth Italy also outside of the traditional contest time and we would like to engage a park authority who already showed some interest for Wiki Loves Earth.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

From the beginning our goal was not to have a high number of pictures but to have pictures of good quality, to do so we tried to engage photographs specialised in nature and people passionate about animals and plants. We did this contacting nature photography associations and also through social media channels targeting groups and pages on Facebook and Instagram, we contacted also park authorities and natural guides associations via email campaigns.

We found out that "our photographers" like to receive prices linked to their passions, as prices for finalists and winners we used mainly vouchers for photographic equipment or rail vouchers or books about nature or photography. We also used to print and send nice participation certificates for the 10 best pictures with a good quality print of the picture. We also were able to create a motivated and enthusiastic group of jurors who every year participate in the selection of the finalists.

Quality: The result of all this was a constant improvement in the final results of the Italian contest: In 2021 pictures from WLE Italy reached the 2nd position in landscape and the 4th in close up/macro In 2020 a picture from WLE Italy reached the 2nd place in the international winners

Quantity: In pandemic times there was decrease in participation, in 2022 we had again an increase in participation and in number of uploaded images. We would like to not lose the momentum and would like to organize an activity/event in spring 2023.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We would like to organize an event inviting our local finalists, members of the jury and the volunteers who were part of Wiki Loves Earth Italy in the last 5 years, we would like to organize an editathon to improve the use of the pictures in the projects.

We would like to organize the editathon in collaboration with a local park authority of a MAB UNESCO Biosphere protected area in one of their visitor centers.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

No new content is planned, the editing activity will be focused on the usage of the images within the projects. Our goal is to improve significantly the usage of the images from the 2022 contest (which in this moment is 2%) but also of the images of 2021 (5%) and 2020 (7%) contests. An average percentage of 10% is an ambitious goal but we will try to reach it.
